Pacquiao: "I Know I Can Upset My Idol, De La Hoya"

By Mark Vester

WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquaio never thought in a million years that he would one day end up fighting Oscar De La Hoya. Manny says that De La Hoya was, and still is, one of his boxing idols.

In his online column, "Kumbinasyon", and translated by ABS-CBN News, Pacquiao reflects on his debut at 122-pounds on June 23, 2001. That night, Pacquiao would knock out Lehlohonolo Ledwaba to capture the IBF super bantamweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. On the same card, in the main event, De La Hoya would dethrone Javier Castillejo to win his first title at 154-pounds. On December 6, at the Las Vegas same venue, Pacquiao will challenge De La Hoya at the agreed weight of 147-pounds - five-weight divisions and 25-pounds above Pacquiao's fighting weight in the 01 event.

Being the much smaller man, Pacquiao is still confident that he can pull off the upset over the man he admired as a young fighter.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think and imagine that I will be fighting the same man who was then a superstar and is still the sport's biggest draw. But I believe that after seven years of fighting, I have grown better, more mature and wiser as a fighter and as a person," Pacquiao said "I also know that I have the capability of scoring an upset over my boyhood idol."

^^More of a reason I'm a huge fan of Hopkins and people like him. I mean, here we have de la hoya so worried about the end of his career he would stoop so low as to fight someone 20 pounds lighter. Whereas b-hop, since turning 40 has fought Jermaine Taylor, Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright, Calzaghe and now Pavlik. 3 of those names being undefeated and all of them were ranked in the P4P lists. I don't care what anyone says, that IS one of the best resumes out of any active fighter, and all over age 40?? crazy. ODH should take notes.
I definitely agree but noone draws a crowd like Oscar and that is probably why theres been such a difference in fight selection. At least De La Hoya fought Mayweather and he even fought Hopkins which i thought was a mismatch in favor of Hopkins and couldnt believe how well Oscar held his own until that vicious body shot

^^No question de la hoya fought great opponents during his career. He had a fantastic career. Mosley, Trinidad, Chavez, Whitaker, vargas, bhop....mayweather. Which is why I think it's fucked up how he's ending his career. I think it tarnishes his legacy a bit.

And I agree that bhop vs de la hoya was a bit of a mismatch, but the difference there were two things: 1). de la hoya previously fought at 160 before fighting hopkins (pacquaio has only ONE fight at 135) and 2). de la hoya challenged bhop.

As lame of a fight this is, it's going to break records.

When I hear random mexican girls at places talking about this fight and how its DLH's last fight, etc. you know its going to sell. DLH is reaching out to crowds that dont really give a shit about boxing. People that would never spend a penny on a PPV Boxing event, and they are all going to be ordering it Dec 6th.

^^yes, that is a good point about de la hoya reaching out to people who normally don't give a shit about boxing. Hopefully if Pacman looks good he will gain a lot of fans and become a superstar in the US (more so then he is).

Do you think it will do better then odh/mayweather? I find that pretty hard to imagine (I think it did 2.4 million buys).

Naaaa I don't think it'll do better than odh/mayweather for the simple fact of Oscar not fighting a real challenge. Some boxing fans that pay for fights all the time maybe turned off.

ringside can be expensive. I remember Roy Jones vs Trinidad they were originally trying to sell ringside seats for $15,000, but no one was buying so they lowered it to 5. Still a lot though. Mega fights that's all the ballers and celebrities and shit. I remember seeing Larry Flynt up front in his gold wheelchair with some hoes I think tyson vs lewis (or holyfield). That's why I'll probably never be at one of these kinds of fights. Fuck it, spend $50 for the PPV and get better vision plus replays.

Over here though in Washington it's a different story (since we don't get big fights). I paid like $65 for RINGSIDE seats when James Kirkland fought here about a year or so ago. Prices were $15-$65.

and great commentary! not. i fucking hate lederman and his stupid ass card.

p.s. nice sig. reminds me of his quote after the fight. ""I know it's not a wise thing to want to get hit, and Mr. King told me after the fight that he doesn't want to see me doing that again, but it's what I wanted to do at the time. I wanted to let him know that I was the boss, I was his daddy, I was the champ. "

^^The HBO guys are hella biased too at times. It's pretty pathetic. I remember how much shit they would talk about Mayweather during his fights and wouldn't give him much credit. I mean, yeah ok I understand some people don't like fighters like mayweather and prefer guys like margarito or gatti, but come on, floyd was the best at what he did. They do that all the time actually now that I think about it and it actually sways viewers as to who is winning rounds, etc.

On other hand they do have some good qualities. Jim Lampley for example is too opinionated, but he IS a boxing guy and loves the sport. Not many people brought this up or maybe they didn't notice it, but he was almost in tears and was choking up at the end of the Cotto/Margarito fight. It was after all the interviews and they were showing replays of the punishment cotto was taking.....Lampley starting talking about how brutal the sport can be and got all teary eyed and choking up. He does that a lot actually, even after Cotto/Mosley he choked up, heres the vid of that:

Steward is a hater. Lennox Lewis DEFINITELY is an idiot, definitely. Larry Merchent cracks me up cuz he's senile but still says some pure golden shit from time to time. And Lederman is horrible at scoring fights these days.

You ever see the video of Larry Merchent punch some fan in the face?? LMAO @ the slow motion effect!
