Pacquiao: "I Know I Can Upset My Idol, De La Hoya"
By Mark Vester
WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquaio never thought in a million years that he would one day end up fighting Oscar De La Hoya. Manny says that De La Hoya was, and still is, one of his boxing idols.
In his online column, "Kumbinasyon", and translated by ABS-CBN News, Pacquiao reflects on his debut at 122-pounds on June 23, 2001. That night, Pacquiao would knock out Lehlohonolo Ledwaba to capture the IBF super bantamweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. On the same card, in the main event, De La Hoya would dethrone Javier Castillejo to win his first title at 154-pounds. On December 6, at the Las Vegas same venue, Pacquiao will challenge De La Hoya at the agreed weight of 147-pounds - five-weight divisions and 25-pounds above Pacquiao's fighting weight in the 01 event.
Being the much smaller man, Pacquiao is still confident that he can pull off the upset over the man he admired as a young fighter.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think and imagine that I will be fighting the same man who was then a superstar and is still the sport's biggest draw. But I believe that after seven years of fighting, I have grown better, more mature and wiser as a fighter and as a person," Pacquiao said "I also know that I have the capability of scoring an upset over my boyhood idol."
