Chavez Sr: "Mexican Fans Will Support Manny Pacquiao"

By Mark Vester

The dream for Julio Cesar Chavez is to see his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, face off with Oscar De La Hoya on May 5, 2009 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico, which holds over 100,000 fans.

De La Hoya turned down a fight with Julio Jr. for December, stating that the younger Chavez was not yet ready for him. Chavez Sr. disagrees, and says that De La Hoya was the same age as his son when the two fought for the first time in 1996. Chavez Sr. is not happy that with De La Hoya fighting Manny Pacquiao on December 6.

"[If he thinks he's not ready] then put him to the test to see if he's not ready. My son is the same age as Oscar when we fought. I also thought the same thing, that he was ready," Chavez Sr told ESTO. "That time I came to fight with a cut and the second time I was no longer hungry. De La Hoya wants to fight with boys. Pacquiao is a flyweight who came up to lightweight."

Chavez Sr. says that De La Hoya should fight someone like WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito if he doesn't plan on fighting his son. He called the fight with Pacquiao a farce, and said the Mexican fans will see through the ploy and support Pacquiao to win.

"Why does he look for easy opponents or those that are not at his weight. Pacquiao can fight with, yes, but for the money," Chavez Sr said.

"You know when Pacquiao is going to beat him? Never! He believes that Mexicans are going to want this, to the contrary, they go to go with Pacquiao. Pacquiao is smaller than me, is he crazy or what? I would bet my life that Julio would knock De La Hoya out and I would wager $5 million that my son beats him

yeah Chavez Sr. is being a bit of a hater there, especially since Oscar would knock his son the fuck out. Chavez jr isn't ready yet. He needs a couple more years and needs to step up and not fight shitty fighters.

But Chavez Sr. is right that oscar should be fighting margarito.

Yo ! Quick question, do you guys think the odds will change much as we get closer to the fight, and in which direction.

Trying to figure out if now would be a smart time to put a wager, as I'm pretty confident that Manny can pull off a UD or at the very least a split. And I'm now willing to put my money where my mouth is ! Ha..

Arum: "Speed Kills, and Oscar Can't Handle Southpaws

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, his flair for promotional hype almost legendary, says the historic battle between Filipino ring idol and national treasure Manny Pacquiao and "The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya will be launched at the Statute of Liberty on Liberty Island, New York on October 1.

In an overseas telephone conversation with insidesports.ph Friday morning, Arum said the New York launch will kick off a five city tour of major cities in the US, two of which, Los Angeles and San Francisco have a "very, very large Filipino population."

Arum said Pacquiao was "so anxious to come over and start training" that he will be in Los Angeles in mid-September and then go on the tour, confirming what Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin "Jeng" Gacal told us on Thursday.

While he didn’t want to give any numbers which celebrated trainer Freddie Roach earlier told insidesports.ph was a 65-35 split, Arum conceded that "of course there was give-and- take otherwise it wouldn’t have taken this long. Both guys are going to bask in the result because this is going to be, in my opinion, the biggest fight of all-time from a revenue standpoint."

Initial estimates put the figure at $100 million gross with Pacquiao standing to earn around $20 million not counting Philippine television and other ancillary rights which Gacal confirmed belong to Pacquiao in the agreement for the De La Hoya fight and that the fighter had an existing obligation to Solar Sports which telecasts the Pacquiao fights over GMA 7.

This may somehow complicate matters since arch rivals ABS-CBN which previously carried the Pacquiao fights and bankrolled his fight against Oscar Larios at the Araneta Coliseum reportedly to the tune of $4million has an agreement with Golden Boy Promotions for De La Hoya’s fights.

Arum recalled that when De La Hoya fought Floyd Mayweather Jr "it was a huge fight but it was more or less an American fight. This is a global event because Pacquiao is the Asian standard bearer and De La Hoya of Mexican descent from the United States. People all over the world are going to be talking about this fight and that’s what makes it as big as it is."

Asked about the advantage of De La Hoya in terms of size alone Arum replied "Ronnie, I would put into evidence one tape that I would hope that you would watch. That was Oscar’s fight with Pernell Whitaker. Remember, this was Oscar at the peak of his career and Whitaker who was fading. And if Whitaker hadn’t give up the last round, for whatever reason I don’t know, he would have won the fight." It was a welterweight title fight in April 1997 and De La Hoya won what some thought was a controversial decision.

Arum noted, "Oscar De La Hoya always has difficulty fighting speed and always has difficulty fighting a southpaw. Manny Pacquiao has both of those qualities in abundance. So Freddie Roach really believes and knows what he was talking about when he said that he likes his guy’s chances in the fight."

Roach had told us on Dennis Prinicipe’s "Sports Chat" show over dzSR Sports Radio weeks ago that De La Hoya was aging, too slow, couldn’t pull the trigger and Pacquiao would knock him out which obviously upset De La Hoya whom Roach trained for the Mayweather fight. De La Hoya’s answer was a cut "we’ll see on December 6" even as he spoke of his desire to avenge the loss of a roster of Mexicans including legends Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales who had been mauled by Pacquiao.

Arum said the Whitaker-De La Hoya fight showed "from a technical standpoint" what Roach and some other people have been talking about. Arum stressed "that’s the speed that kills you and Oscar doesn’t handle southpaws." Besides Arum agreed that Pacquiao appeared to have "a burning desire within him."

Arguing against some people who feel the fight is a mismatch because of De La Hoya’s size, Arum cited one of the proofs that it was not. He said "the smartest people in the world are those who set up betting lines and those big punters who bet on the fights. They are not talking from the standpoint of any kind of sentiment or emotion. This fight opened up at 8 to 5. That’s less than 2 to 1. There hasn’t been a big fight all year where odds have been so close."

Antonio Margarito: "De La Hoya Deserves No Respect"

By Mark Vester

During his recent visit of Puerto Rico, WBA welterweight champ Antonio Margarito had plenty to say on Oscar De La Hoya. Margarito was down in Puerto Rico to support friend and countryman Hugo Cazares in his battle with Ivan Calderon.

Margarito gave his thoughts on De La Hoya's fight with WBC lightweight champ Manny Pacquiao on December 6 in Las Vegas. He said the bout was nothing more than a "side show." He is offended that De La Hoya is marketing the event as a fight to avenge all of the Mexican fighters that Pacquiao beat. Margarito says the fight has nothing to do with revenge, and that Oscar's choice to fight Pacquiao "is all about money" and not about making the best fight.

"It's nothing more than a show. How is it possible that Oscar is going to fight with a [fighter who used to be] flyweight," Margarito told Primera Hora. "This is all about money. There is no title at stake. He fights him, but he doesn't dare fight me."

Margarito does not plan on watching the fight and says De La Hoya deserves no respect for taking on a fighter who two-fights ago was winning a super featherweight title.

"I don't want to see the fight. Honestly it doesn't interest me. Oscar deserves no respect," Margarito said.

^^More of a reason I'm a huge fan of Hopkins and people like him. I mean, here we have de la hoya so worried about the end of his career he would stoop so low as to fight someone 20 pounds lighter. Whereas b-hop, since turning 40 has fought Jermaine Taylor, Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright, Calzaghe and now Pavlik. 3 of those names being undefeated and all of them were ranked in the P4P lists. I don't care what anyone says, that IS one of the best resumes out of any active fighter, and all over age 40?? crazy. ODH should take notes.
