Mayweather Jr: If Martinez Can Make 150, We Can Fight
By Rick Reeno and Ryan Burton
Las Vegas - Pound for pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) had a media gathering at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, and presented a check for a $100,000 to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Nevada Affiliate, which is a charity that helps breast cancer survivors.
Mayweather emphatically stated that he is only interested in fighting fellow pound for pound champion Manny Pacquiao on May 5th at the MGM Grand. If the fight doesn't take place, Mayweather said that he would have to look to other options.
"Manny Pacquiao is the only fight I want. But, but, but if he won't fight me then I will have to fight someone else. I have to make a living," Mayweather stated.
The Las Vegas resident said that he hasn't thought about other potential opponents and that all of his focus is on Pacquiao. Mayweather was advised that middleweight king Sergio Martinez offered to come down to a catchweight of 150-pounds to fight him. After hearing this news, Floyd said that he would be interested in the potential match.
If Sergio Martinez can make 150, we can make the fight, absolutely. There are no excuses. If he can make 150, lets make it happen. I'm a little but different from the other guys. I think he has a very, very impressive style," Mayweather said.
Martinez returns on March 17th at New York's Madison Square Garden, against tough middleweight contender Matthew Macklin.
Mayweather Jr. Shoots Down Canelo, Cotto and Guerrero
By Rick Reeno
During a media interview with BoxingScene.com and a select group of writers, WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. shot down the three rumored options for May 5th - WBA junior welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, WBC junior welterweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, and former champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero. Mayweather is scheduled to fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, on May 5th, and he made it clear that WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is the only opponent on his mind.
"There are so many young and strong champions out there, that I don't really know at this particular time [who I'll fight outside of Pacquiao]. There have been a few names thrown out there. But as far as the guy they're saying, "The Ghost" - absolutely not. I'm not going to give the fans nothing like that. I don't even know who this guy, but I wish him the best," Mayweather said.
"I think Cotto is a very good matchup, but once again, if I go against Cotto the fans and people will say that it's Pacquiao's leftovers. He's still a strong, solid champion in my eyes. When he fought Pacquiao, they fought at a catch-weight [of 145-pounds]. If we fight Cotto I would want him to be comfortable, where both guys are happy. I think Canelo would be a big fight, but I think he needs some more experience under his belt and then eventually we can make the fight happen down the line. Right now my main focus is Manny Pacquiao. Team Pacquaio, stop having your excuses. I have my guarantee, so let's make the fight happen. Every day I'm tweeting and tweeting and tweeting. Do I have to tweet again tonight? I'm basically chasing the guy."
Run Manny run or grow some nuts and fight Mayweather.
