Re: Okay
Also unlike joining a white club, your ass would get stared, threatened, and harassed the fuck out. lmao.
There needs to be more unity among African-Americans. But...much of it does already exist. The phenomenon I mentioned earlier, the fear of being labeled white-washed, is partly due to the collective mentality in the Black race.
Support unity, support Black groups, but also, support Black individualism. Many times you will hear "as a Black man," "as a Black woman", more often than "as a man" "as myself" "as an American" etc. The hive mind approach is more of a limit than a gain, as it creates a theory of who is the "blackest", and forces others to aspire to it.
Check out On Being Black and Feeling Guilty. Discussed is the growing Black middle class. Many of the people who struggled, strived, and achieved to reach financial success are often stripped of their blackness for various reasons. Either they catered to the white man and were whitewashed, they are somehow guilty of not pulling other black people up with them, or they must have fucked some black people over to get where they are today.
And the sellout/whitewashed label is flung around often and quickly in the black community, doing a large amount of psychological damage. The effect of any group is to see the mean of its parts as the norm. Many black people are poor, so the blackest black person must be poor. Many black people vote Democrat, so the blackest black person votes Democrat. Many black people listen to certain types of music, so other types are not acceptable. The list goes on.
And the effect on racial tension is to continue a rift between black and white people. In a recent study done, it was shown that black people can evoke feelings of fear, nervousness, and anxiousness in white people, just as white people can evoke hostility, insecurity, and vulnerability in blacks, just on virtue of seeing skin.
This no doubt has to do with lack of exposure, and I don't see how any person so self-segregated makes any leaps forward in racial relations.

Blacks Being Self-Segregated
True, there are a lot of black-based organizations, clubs, groups, etc, etc, etc. I'm sure you would not be denied membership to any of these things if you wanted to join & were not black.

Unlike years ago when a black person better not even think about joining a 'white' club. I don't believe that the purpose of these groups is to completely segregate the black population. I think their purpose is more to create some type of unity in a country where the rate of black on black hate, envy, and crime is off the charts. These groups offer blacks an opportunity to create and share positive experiences in a positive, accepting, and nurturing environment. I think it's very important to have these black-based clubs. We need to form some type of unity so that we can look at ourselves & see exactly what needs to be done from within. I'm not saying that black people don't need white people's help. I'm just saying that we need some type of union here, people.
