What is it Like to Teach Black Students?

i think thats kinda well understood here. of course skin color doesnt make one act a certain way. its environment. the reality though is that minorities tend to be concentrated in those environments in which under acheiving lifestyles are prevalent.
as for reparations...i wouldnt be strongly against them being issued, but i dont believe they will really be beneficial. and they definitely should not have the money come from us. if anything, for it to be fair it would have to come from families of old money...and that would just be a big mess and create even heavier racial tensions. and if we're gonna play that game, there are many other groups that have been affected by past oppression...so it would just open up the floodgates. poverty is the problem...but its poverty due to ignorance. so giving paper wont do much. its a matter of the black community which has made it to do more in reaching out to the ghetto community and showing them the way. theyre the ones who need to provide more dialogue as to what black people need to stop doing, and what they need to start doing. the latino community needs this as well. changes like stigmatizing rather than glorifiying having kids at the age of 20. dispelling the myth that when a minority is articulate or distancing him/herself from the place or people with whom he/she grew up to get educated, that he/she is a sellout/pretentious/trying to be white. shit like that is what minorities need. and they need it from the people who they look up to to teach it to them....its obvioulsy not teachers so i guess pastors or celebrities/musicians?

Sydal- You are starting to ramble on and on. You dont have to prove to me that you grew up hard, and went thru struggles. I'm sure you have. If you think that color is irrelevant, then you are in ignorance Sir. Being ignorant is not a bad thing, because we are all ignorant in some aspect. I am ignorant when it comes to doing computer graphics, when others are damn near experts. You asked how do I explain someone who "got off they ass" and made it. See, theres a few things we need to look at right there Sydal. One being that you even said got up off they ass. Would that immply that you think that "they" are sitting around on thier asses not doing anything? Its so second nature for you (which proves my point to an extent) to say get up off they ass, which is accepted here in the US as "stop being lazy, do something". Secondly, you must define what "made it" is. There are those who feel they made it cause they work at Dave & Busters and are able to pay a car note. There are others who feel they made it cause they own 3 homes, have a career, and 2.5 children. So what making it is differs from person to person.
You then went on to name some "blacks" that made it. Entertainers and Athletes. Wow, I tell you, this superiority complex is INGRAINED in folks...... So these people you named, "made it"? Those 9 people you named have also experienced the residual affects of slavery, and who knows, how much farther they would have "made it" without that hinderance? And again those 9 are exceptions when you have the majority of the people not living like that, or having it like that. Out of the millions & millions of black folks, you only can think of those 9 right off the top of your head as being those who "made it"? That is interesting. What about some of the black folks in your community? Have they not made it? What about the ones that work right next to you in whatever you do? Have they not made it? You picked entertainers and athletes. As long as we singin and dancin or shootin a ball through a hoop or catchin a ball runnin, then thats making it?

i think "get off their asses" is a prefectly good way of putting it. a big reason why people dont progress is really just because they dont get off their ass. they hustle in some way, but because the playing field is uneven, minorities need to accept that we need to step our hustle game up a few more notches.
this isnt a race thing saying that minorities are inherently lazy...cause everyones lazy. a lot of white boys dont get off their asses either..but theyre fortunate enough to have families with the means to save them from falling into a pit for being lazy fucks.
but its the truth. minorities need to get off their asses. my brother would of been so much better off if he woulndt of been so lazy and just taken some type of courses or something to progress in some type of career field. now hes living check to check....definitely working hard and all day....but not really advancing because at the end of the day he was lazy. i love him and dont look down on him for it, but its just the truth. and then theres the people (lots of asians from what i notice) who work all day, take english classes at night, and then eventually take other type of certification classes to better themselves. as unfair as it is that they need to work that hard, while others (like whites) dont have to work half as hard, its just the way it is. their kids now have better opportunity. but then theirs all the kids who go and fuck it up by not getting off their asses and appreciating what their parents provided for them. sad truth

Sorry Reese, I was with ya until this last statement...Sounds like a cop-out to me. 99% of Italians didn't even come to this country until the late 1800's-early 1900's...During WWII, Italians and Japanese were put into internment camps for "security reasons" due to Mussolini and Hirohito...Injustice is done across the board. And I don't wanna play the whole "my people had it worse than your people " game. You're lumping an entire continent into an oppressing mega-race. Hell, there is still slavery going on in Africa as we speak! It's not uncommon for people in parts of Nigeria to "trade" their children for goods. In Ghana, a man can be punished by having to give his daughter to someone. And these aren't "white folks" my friend.

I cant speak for Big Reese but I dont think all white folkz get the world handed to em on a "silver platter" but you need to understand that minoritiez a lot of the time get the world handed to us on a dirty ass used paper plate. As far as them coming in the late 1800's early 1900's look at the climate of America in that time frame. I suggest you go get a book entitled "Without Sanctuary" so that you can SEE. History is the best reward for our research. As for you referring to where acts of slavery still exist, and breaking your back to point out black folks is doin that. What began as slavery gave way to sharecropping/Jim Crow... and eventually evolved into one of the slickest forms of racial opression ever concocted: Red Line Districting
Red line districting took place at the end of WWII... In addition to W.A.S.P.s (White Anglo Saxon Protestants), the banks began to give mortgages to the Irish and Italian GI's so they could move from the inner-cities to the burbs (basically they got accepted into the boys club)... that is when the vacuum in the inner cities was filled by black folk... once the banks were running low on WASP and Euro-Catholic clientele, they began allowing a few black GI's to receive mortgages..
Redline districting was implemented so that the property value of houses would plumment once a neighborhood ceased to be enthnically homogeneous (i.e. when a black family finally managed to move in)... white flight ensued...
In a further tightening of the economic noose, banks continued their refusal of approving businesses loans for a vast majority of black folk, as this was standard practice...
Lack of business + poverty ='d increase in crime... as crime went up, the black families that wanted to move out were given bottom dollar for their houses, which in turn were sold to the next black family for as high as possible...
Keep folks in debt, limit employment opportunities, assassinate/incarcerate community leaders (cointelpro), and top that off with a dash of dope (CIA-backed Contras) for added drama...
...& the differnces in the sentencing guidelines for cocaine offenses (hard vs soft) provided further icing on the cake...
