Its sad that the issue is not black students but teachers. This guy is clearly not much more capable than his "inept" white female counterparts at holding down a good class. If you want to talk about disadvantaged, let's talk about the people who teach at inner city and even suburban schools. Most of them either picked teaching because they had no gifts in college academia, they have some border-line insane obsession with kids (particulary young kids "that baby is so cute I want one I want one) or they were picked on their entire lives and want to be in charge (similar to many police officers). I've volunteered at schools in inner-city San Francisco and watched just about any kid with a little bravado over-run their teachers. In one instance a teacher showed up to class without her hair combed in jeans and an old shirt. She didn't even shower because she smelled like B-O. The chldren just dont take that shit seriously. When I came in and lectured I wrecked shop. Kids would sit in their fuckin seats and if they didn't I'd put a dot on the chalkboard and make them touch their nose to it and stand like that the rest of the lecture. Its not difficult to teach children mentioned in the above paragraph, it takes critical character traits that many teachers lack, including, leadership, extrovert personalities, caring about the people you teach, and being confrontational.

I know there are many great teachers out there. If it weren't for 3 teachers I had in high school, I'd probably be in jail or in a shack with 16 kids by now. But I'm speakin the general truth.

but you speaking about kids, this teacher had a class full of teens.

Did the teacher exaggerated a bit? in a way the teacher did, but she's right on point with most of the stuff...

oh okay, you said "kids"..so I assumed you was teaching elementary school kids. Was the class diverse or was it a class full of black kids?

I think if the teachers class would had been diverse, she would have had a better chance getting those kids attention....

I've volunteered at several and seen a little bit of everything when it comes to demographics. Perhaps having a more diverse classroom helps out a bit I never thought of that but some of the diverse classrooms I've been in have provided a better learning atmosphere, for whatever reason.

I hope you are able to understand what I'm going to type.

Whether that person be black or white. It does not matter. Why? Because there are those who will share the same melanin (color, dark) whose minds have been so corrupted in buying in what is portrayed as thier community and thier people by other sources. Do you understand?

Example, today is July 4th, 2009. You can go anywhere in America and see us black folks, celebrating a day in which this country (the same country that had us in chattle slavery, and still on paperwork as being only 3.5's of a human being) gained independence from Europe.

Now with us, (Black folks) being descendants of slaves, and whose ancestors were in slavery when 7/4/1776 hit, why would we be celebrating that day? Our reality was not an independent one?

I say that to say that one has to look at the THINKING of a person who would take the time to write that long ass piece. Its easy to state a problem, or what you see as a problem, but why not counteract it with a soulution? What did that author do to make better that dismal situation that he found himself in, better yet, found himself in for many years? AND if he was Black, then he went the route that many of our people go, by going to the "white" school. That is laughable. We have enough Clarence Thomas/Ward Connerly type negroes around here, with this author, we can add one more to that list. And to the one who said it was on point, then you really gotta take a look at your reality. i mus be habbin 2 tipe leik dis, cuh dis da' blak way ov tiepin and tawlkin' likedat man say N da arrtickle he rote.

^^You need to finish the article....He addressed "change" towards the end...And yes the author was generalizing, but there was a lot of truth to that generalization.....

I found the article to be particularly unbiased, as he did mention that obviously not all blacks are like that. He also mentioned that there are also whites who act in a similar fashion to the black teens. He also generalized about whites, and there was a lot of truth there as well. Perhaps it wasn't in his genetic make-up to fight. To make a change, you must be the change....Some people just lack the ability, or it's not in their nature. Example, a child is verbally insulted by a larger child in a school hallway. Instead of fighting back against the larger child, he stays quiet and walks away....

I'm just curious what that solution would be? Just a couple weeks ago the U.S. Senate passed a slavery apology. It's damn near 2010. What more can be done to make up for what happened in the past? It's a part of U.S. history, like it or not...

So an Apology is the end all to 400+ years of servitude? Get a pat on the back and everybody be happy? What about the mental scars? Some say Reparations. They cant put an amount on what was done to the original people of this planet. It would be a start though. Like the Jews get thier money, and the Asians who were interment camps get money, and Native people who were on this land mass way before the europeans came in and wrecked shop. See point #4 back page of the Final Call of what we want, then go listen to Khalid Muhammad lecture The Black Holocaust

Many people can argue in so many different ways when it comes down to slavery. For one, why doesn't Africa apologize, too? After all, they sold their own people out and that's what started the white/black slavery mess. Before that happened, white folks enslaved other white folks, Africans enslaved other Africans, and so on. Slavery has been around since the beginning of mankind, in different variations. So, if one apologizes, the other should, too...even though I think an apology is a weak attempt at making things "better".

About reparations...wasn't that a promise made to "survivors" of slavery? If so, there are none left. There are definitely descendants, but no survivors. In any case, reparations aren't going to do shit, either.

The fact of the matter is, different people have different views on things. Some black folks say let it go already, some say never let it go. Some hate white people like myself, some don't. It's all relative to each individuals mindset, and what they were taught growing up.

I don't agree with an apology...simply because it doesn't solve shit. Maybe if the folks that started this shit had apologized, it would have meant more. But I don't agree with an apology coming from folks that weren't present during that time. I wouldn't apologize, 'cause my family had absolutely nothing to do with what happened in this country prior to 1920.

In any case, this author went out of his way to talk down on black folks. If he didn't have any ill feelings in his heart, this essay would have offered more solutions and more examples of how there are SUCCESSFUL black folks in this country, just like there are unsuccessful ones. There are successful and unsuccessful students of all races, all over the country. So I feel like this article was in no way helpful or even necessary. It reflected a small percentage.

Just my opinion though.

I read he whole piece and nowhere did I see it say Mr. Jackson is white, think about that for a second. Remember how pissed people were at Chris Rock and Bill Cosby for taking a stand and speaking on the ignorence of this new generation of black people in america.

Ignorence has no color lines, if the school was predominantly black and was also an upper middle class school i bet the situation would be different because chances are the kids would have parents with a higher educational level

generalizations can hinder your actions and ultimately will hold you back in life imo. i guess ignorance is bliss for some people but thats not a good enough excuse especially when peoples life are constantly in jeopardy.

4th of july in retrospect is an awkward holiday for me to acknowledge but i do know one thing
FUCK COLUMBUS DAY

the guy did sound like he was making an effort to put down black people, which i dont agree with....HOWEVER.....

i work with minority/low income students. have been for about 5 years....and they can breakdown very nice, non racist people in a matter of months(especially white women).....ive seen teachers attitudes just change because of the absurd, ignorant, obnoxiousness of students. and thats bullshit for people to say that they shouldnt be teachers if they cant handle it. these are young intelligent people with tolerance and patience who want to go into teaching to make a difference, knowing that theyre gonna have to reach out to kids from troubled backgrounds..they know that theyre gonna have to work harder to get through to these kids, but i dont think they expect for kids to be yelling "shut the fuck up!" back at them cause they asked the student to change seats or clean up their snack...and then when they try to have a confrence with the parent, the parent never shows or gets defensive with the teacher. it can be pretty bad.

i went to a mexico soccer game at qualcomm stadium last weekend, and that reminded me why so many of these kids act the way they do....their fuckin parents are a bunch of grown dumbasses!!!! i was fortunate to be raised in a mexican home where my parents were mature. my pops and i were at this game just laughing and shaking our heads at how ridiculous these people were acting. grown men throwing shit, blowing horns in peoples faces, and being defiant towards ushers who wouldnt let them sit in seats that didnt belong to them. and theyve all got a grip of kids by their side....and these are the kids who are driving teachers crazy at school....their role model is their dad..the guy whos calling the security guard a puto for making him put his cigarette out...or their mom..some ignorant 24 year old with a bad attitude dressed like a bratz doll. part of this problem has to do with the fact that minorities are having these kids young, so they themselves are still far from mature enough to be setting examples for a kid.

black kids its the same thing. though they do act a little different than mexican kids. ima be honest, from my experience...black girls can have the nastiest attitude imaginable. it blows me away how angry and ignorant some of them can be...2 horrible combinations to have. but with that said, there are 3 middle school mexican girls who have been by far the rudest students i have ever worked with....so its not a race thing.

and its not a money in the schools thing. cause ive worked at schools in pretty impoverished neighborhoods (baker elementary..oceanview and 40th in dago....dudes in their bright red shirts at the park across the street), and i felt they had all the tools needed for a good learning environment. lincoln high in dago is a state of the art school..looks better than la jolla high....but theyre still a fucked up school cause its not about that. its just about kids coming to school from homes where their parents still dont think and act like true adults. until that changes minorities will always be fucked.

ive worked in schools in white neighborhoods and the kids attitudes are a world of a difference....and its not cause theyre smarter or more articulate, but just that theyre actually RESPECTFUL. and they actually get concerned when you tell them you're gonna have a talk with their parents, which is a big deal. you have a talk with a kids parents and youll see the difference in their behavior the next day. and these arent all white kids. these are minorities too, but generally speaking minorities in these schools have different attitudes than minorities in the hood...so its not about skin color but rather just about environment

i know institutionalized racism plays a major role in this but latin and black (when it comes to school asians and filipinos seem do be cool) folks need to really step it up. the playing field isnt level obviously but its not slanted to the point that underdogs cant come out on top. in the end i love working in the inner city schools, but its a sad world....but the schools arent the ones mainly at fault (which i used to believe) it really is the minorities themselves...bill cosby aint lying
