we are dumping dead weight in franzen and lewis for kuz. garko will not be offered a roster spot and kuz will fill the corner infield platoon role. we will have dan uggla by the end of the week and either jermane dye or vlad guerrero as well.

just my thoughts. i dont think thats enough to put us over the top. the dodgers are going on year 3 with almost the same line up and that counts. so unless our pitching comes out of spring training on fire, we may find ourselves still spotting a 5-7 game cushion to the dodgers before we get on track. sabean is a fucking fag.

KNBR reported negotiations between SD and SF are underway for Kevin Kouzmanoff in exchange for Fred Lewis and Kevin Frandsen, but the Padres are believed to want more for Kouzmanoff.
The Pads don't want Frandsen/Lewis:

The Giants might have interest in Kouzmanoff, but, according to a #Padres source, the Padres have no interest in Lewis or Frandsen. #MLB

Bruce Bochy likes Olivo and Torrealba, plus thoughts on Velez, Lewis, Kouzmanoff

Posted by Andrew Baggarly on December 8th, 2009 at 2:00 pm | Categorized as Uncategorized

Giants Manager Bruce Bochy just completed his roundtable with the media here at the winter meetings. Here are the main news points, with some quotes expounding on a few topics below that:

–Bochy likes Miguel Olivo and Yorvit Torrealba, but signing a new catcher isn’t imminent — or any other deals. He said the rumored Kevin Kouzmanoff deal is “not even close.”

–Eugenio Velez stands to get the lion’s share of playing time as the leadoff hitter, although he and Andres Torres could be in the lineup on the same day. Bochy hopes Velez can increase his unimpressive OBP and patience as he gains experience.

–Fred Lewis is not a candidate to lead off, even though he’s one of few high-OBP guys on the roster. Lewis will fight for a job in the spring. (But I’d wager Lewis will be dealt long before he’d set foot in Scottsdale.)

–Freddy Sanchez could hit third, not second. Suprisingly, Edgar Renteria could be the No.2 hitter. Both middle infielders are coming along well from their surgeries and are expected to be healthy when camp opens. Sanchez is about to begin baseball activities and his shoulder, while a long time in healing, is finally better.

–Bochy has talked to Aaron Rowand about getting paced a little more in the first half to avoid steep second-half declines. Torres could get time in center field when Rowand takes a break, although Bochy also mentioned Torres could get time in right field.

–Bochy didn’t label Nate Schierholtz the heir apparent to Randy Winn in right field, saying he’ll fight for a job in spring just like everyone else. It could go deep into the spring before the outfield corners are sorted out, too.

–While Bochy debunked Kouzmanoff, he didn’t exactly deny interest, either.

Here’s what Bochy had to say about the leadoff spot:

“The way it’s set up, we’re very comfortable there. Ideally, sure, you’d like one guy to lead off and get used to that role. But Velez is in line for the lion’s share of playing time. There’s times they both can play and Torres can go to right field. … We know how important it is for that leadoff guy getting on. You hope experience will increase his OBP and his discipline at the plate. This kid continues to get better and better.”

My own thought: Velez will have to do more than be patient. He’ll also need to learn how to bunt for a hit. There’s no excuse for a guy with his tools not to be able to get 25 bunt hits a year.

On Lewis: “I put him in there (at leadoff) last year and Freddy came up to me and said he wasn’t too comfortable in that spot. That was my hope because he sees pitches, gets on base, has speed. He could be a good leadoff hitter. But a guy has to want to do it.”
Giants and Padres discuss Kouzmanoff, Frandsen

Posted by Andrew Baggarly on December 8th, 2009 at 1:03 pm | Categorized as Uncategorized

I’ve just confirmed a tweet from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale that the Giants and Padres had discussions about a trade for San Diego third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff in which infielder Kevin Frandsen would head south.

But the Padres have little interest in Fred Lewis, who was rumored to be part of discussions. San Diego already has a glut of left-handed hitting outfielders. They’re searching for pitching instead.

Could Frandsen and someone like Kevin Pucetas be enough to make a deal for Kouzmanoff, who’s due a raise in arbitration? Perhaps. But the Giants also are averse to trading any upper-level pitching depth after losing Brad Penny.

Both Frandsen and Lewis would welcome a change of scenery. That much is for sure.

Stay tuned.

Sabean rules out Johnny Damon or re-signing Bengie Molina, laments Pudge Rodriguez’s two-year deal with Washington

Posted by Andrew Baggarly on December 8th, 2009 at 3:27 pm | Categorized as Uncategorized

Brian Sabean’s afternoon media session just concluded here in Indianapolis. Here are the main news points:

–Johnny Damon is not a fit, even though his market could be softening after the Yankees’ acquisition of Curtis Granderson.

–Despite reports the Mets are looking at other catching options, there is no chance that Bengie Molina could re-sign with the Giants. “That ship has sailed,” Sabean said.

–The two-year contract Pudge Rodriguez received from Washington could seriously cripple the Giants’ ability to find a catcher. Now guys like Miguel Olivo and Yorvit Torrealba are surer than ever they can get a two-year deal. With Sabean unwilling to give multiple years to any catcher, “there’s still a chance, against that downside and that type of money, that we’ll revisit (Buster) Posey. Posey could step up against that.” The pool should widen when players are non-tendered on Friday, though.

–The “needle didn’t move” on any trade discussions. Those never-ending Dan Uggla rumors? There are no indications the Giants will maintain a hot and heavy pursuit.

–It’s possible “and I underline possible” that Juan Uribe’s agent will revisit the Giants’ one-year contract with an option. But Sabean said his interest “is not as a frontline player. That’s one of the reasons he’s looking for (a starting role) and to be paid like that.”

–The Diamondbacks improved themselves with today’s three-team deal and Sabean always anticipates a shotgun start in the NL West. “They had a rough year. … But they work hard at what they do and they’re good at what they do.”

–Asked about up-the-middle depth, particularly with Freddy Sanchez and Edgar Renteria coming back from surgeries, Sabean said the club is counting on Emmanuel Burriss to get healthy. He also mentioned Ryan Rohlinger. One notable omission: Kevin Frandsen.

Fred Lewis and Frandsen both fucking suck. No wonder the Padres didnt want them. And does anyone have a legit reason as to why Sabean said "the ship has sailed" on re-signing Molina? I know they didnt want to give him more than a year, but what the fuck?

-The Giants are interested in second baseman Orlando Hudson, major league sources told Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com
If the Giants signed O-Dog, the team would move Freddy Sanchez to third base. While it wouldn't address the Giant's lack of power, it would still upgrade their offense -- and defense too, with Pablo Sandoval shifting to first-base. The team has a lot of different directions it can go in. Another suitor for Hudson that has popped up in recent days are the Rockies.
-According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants plan to discuss Adrian Beltre soon with his agent, Scott Boras.
The two sides have not yet met but apparently plan to do so at his week's Winter Meetings. Beltre, 30, hit .265/.304/.379 in 2009 and is thought to be seeking over $10 million annually on the open market.

here u go....looks like the Giants are gonna be fucked in the catcher situation.

According to MLB.com's Thomas Harding, the Rockies have offered a two-year contract to free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba.
The Giants had interest in signing the 31-year-old backstop, but were only willing to give him a one-year deal. Torrealba hit .324/.373/.394 with two homers and 31 RBI in 2009 and is hoping to capitalize on the fine season with a lucrative multi-year contract. Multiple teams have shown interest so there's a chance he'll be able to top Colorado's two-year offer.

Lets make a run for Doumit or Ausmus, fuck it. I dont see a 1 year anywhere so far, gonna have to pony up for a 2 year possibly, i wouldn't rush Posey at this point. 1 1/2 years in the minors couldnt hurt.
