Bruce Bochy likes Olivo and Torrealba, plus thoughts on Velez, Lewis, Kouzmanoff

Giants Manager Bruce Bochy just completed his roundtable with the media here at the winter meetings. Here are the main news points, with some quotes expounding on a few topics below that:
–Bochy likes Miguel Olivo and Yorvit Torrealba, but signing a new catcher isn’t imminent — or any other deals. He said the rumored Kevin Kouzmanoff deal is “not even close.”
–Eugenio Velez stands to get the lion’s share of playing time as the leadoff hitter, although he and Andres Torres could be in the lineup on the same day. Bochy hopes Velez can increase his unimpressive OBP and patience as he gains experience.
–Fred Lewis is not a candidate to lead off, even though he’s one of few high-OBP guys on the roster. Lewis will fight for a job in the spring. (But I’d wager Lewis will be dealt long before he’d set foot in Scottsdale.)
–Freddy Sanchez could hit third, not second. Suprisingly, Edgar Renteria could be the No.2 hitter. Both middle infielders are coming along well from their surgeries and are expected to be healthy when camp opens. Sanchez is about to begin baseball activities and his shoulder, while a long time in healing, is finally better.
–Bochy has talked to Aaron Rowand about getting paced a little more in the first half to avoid steep second-half declines. Torres could get time in center field when Rowand takes a break, although Bochy also mentioned Torres could get time in right field.
–Bochy didn’t label Nate Schierholtz the heir apparent to Randy Winn in right field, saying he’ll fight for a job in spring just like everyone else. It could go deep into the spring before the outfield corners are sorted out, too.
–While Bochy debunked Kouzmanoff, he didn’t exactly deny interest, either.
Here’s what Bochy had to say about the leadoff spot:
“The way it’s set up, we’re very comfortable there. Ideally, sure, you’d like one guy to lead off and get used to that role. But Velez is in line for the lion’s share of playing time. There’s times they both can play and Torres can go to right field. … We know how important it is for that leadoff guy getting on. You hope experience will increase his OBP and his discipline at the plate. This kid continues to get better and better.”
My own thought: Velez will have to do more than be patient. He’ll also need to learn how to bunt for a hit. There’s no excuse for a guy with his tools not to be able to get 25 bunt hits a year.
On Lewis: “I put him in there (at leadoff) last year and Freddy came up to me and said he wasn’t too comfortable in that spot. That was my hope because he sees pitches, gets on base, has speed. He could be a good leadoff hitter. But a guy has to want to do it.”
