According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, up to four teams have shown interest in Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit.
Morosi believes the Blue Jays, Mariners and Giants could be among the interested parties, but that's all speculation. Doumit, 28, hit .250/.299/.414 this season with 10 homers and 38 RBI in 280 at-bats. He is set to earn an affordable $3.55 million in 2010 and $5.1 million in 2011.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Brad Penny's potential one-year deal with the Cardinals could be worth up to $9 million through incentives.
Chances are the base salary will fit in around $5 million. It's a deal that makes sense for both sides. Penny, 31, has dealt with a few injuries in the past few years and will be given a shot on a contending team to re-establish his value. The right-hander finished the 2009 season with an 11-9 record, 4.88 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. He went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA with the Giants.
According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, the Nationals are among the teams that have shown interest in free agent catcher Brad Ausmus this winter.
Ausmus has also heard from the Giants, and Dodgers are thought to have interest in re-signing him. The soon-to-be 41-year-old posted a .295/.343/.368 batting line this past season with one home run and nine RBI in 95 at-bats. He'll probably work as a backup wherever he lands.
According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star, free agent catcher Miguel Olivo is drawing interest from the Giants, Mariners and Rockies.
Olivo batted .249/.292/.490 with a career-high 23 homers and 65 RBI in 2009. The 31-year-old could find a starting gig in San Francisco but may have to battle for playing time in Seattle and Colorado. He earned $2.7 million this past year and is almost certainly looking for a pay raise.
