Miguel Cotto: "We Lost 'The Battle' - But Not The War!"
By Mark Vester
Miguel Cotto was still given a hero's welcome when he arrived back home to Puerto Rico. Last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Cotto was battered and then stopped by Antonio Margarito in eleven-rounds. The pay-per-view event was called "The Battle" and it lived up the hype. Cotto returned home bruised and sore, but his spirits were high.
Cotto and his team held a media gathering for the press to discuss his fight with Margarito. Hundreds of Puerto Rican boxing fans showed up to salute Cotto for his brave effort in the fight. He told his fans that he expects to be back in the ring before the end of the year and hinted that at some point he will pursue another fight with Margarito.
"In terms of the future, we are going to rest a little and before the end of the year we are very sure that we will be back in the ring," said Cotto to Primera Hora. "The battle did not end like we expected, but I am very pleased with my work in the fight. I am little sad by the results. We lost 'the battle' - but not the war!"
When asked about his lack of bodywork in the fight, Cotto said that he was unable to find an opening to get to the body.
"It's very easy to be on the outside looking in and see the fights in a very different way than we see them in the ring. We didn't work the body because we were not able to. We did not find a way to attack his body and that's why we didn't," Cotto said. "There was a plan A, plan B and a plan C. If you watch the rounds in details, you will see that we utilized different strategies. We did everything in our power."
Cotto was very quick to let the people know that he was not planning on replacing any member of his team, including uncle/trainer Evangelista Cotto, and he was not mad at his uncle for throwing in the towel to stop the fight.
"My team has always been there. The friction between me and my team was created by you, the press. We have had our share of problems like a lot of other teams, but we are reasonable adults and we resolve our differences and here we are. I don't have any discussions regarding the decisions that Evangelista makes before, during and after the fight. Evangelista is the chief trainer of our team and he knows what he has to do and when he has to do them."
