SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) - Mike Singletary will be named the San Francisco 49ers head coach and receive a multi-year contract as early as next week, according to The Sacramento Bee.
Citing a source close to the situation, the Bee reported that the 49ers will officially offer the deal to Singletary following Sunday’s season finale against Washington.
The NFL’s Rooney Rule prevents teams from signing interim coaches to new deals during the season. Since Singletary is a minority, the 49ers do not have to go through a formal interview process at season’s end.
The newspaper first reported on Wednesday that Singletary would have the interim tag removed from his name. Singletary took over after the 49ers fired Mike Nolan following a 2-5 start.
The team’s linebackers coach since 2005, Singletary has led San Francisco to a 4-4 record since taking the reins.
“Just the way guys have responded to him and played for him says a lot,” said quarterback Shaun Hill. “Those decisions aren’t up to us, but we feel like. … We’re that close and we can turn the corner with what we have.”
Singletary made headlines in his first game at the helm when he banished tight end Vernon Davis to the locker room following an unnecessary-roughness penalty during the team’s 34-13 loss to Seattle.
In the most memorable postgame press conference of the NFL season, the Hall of Fame linebacker made it clear that he would hold his players accountable.
“I would rather play with 10 people and just get penalized all the way until we got to do something else, rather than play with 11 when I know that right now that person is not sold out to be a part of this team,” Singletary said. “Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them. Cannot coach with them. Can’t do it. I want winners.”
With the team heading in the right direction, it has been clear for some time that the 49ers are prepared to remove Singletary’s “interim” tag and negotiate a contract extension.
According to The Bee, Singletary met with team officials earlier this week and laid out his plan for the future. His vision for the team includes defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, but not offensive coordinator Mike Martz.
Under Martz, the 49ers have gone from last in total offense to 24th this season. His style, however, does not appear to be in line with Singletary’s conservative philosophy.

But what happens 500 miles to the south, where San Diego meets Denver for a playoff spot, could set up the second most important decision. If the Chargers lose, finishing an uninspired 7-9, Norv Turner should be fired as head coach, giving the 49ers a chance to bring him back as their offensive coordinator.

Gore practices, 49ers list him 'probable'

Frank Gore practiced extensively Friday for the first time since suffering a sprained ankle Dec. 7.
He is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins, which means he is virtually guaranteed to take the field.
"He's looking good,'' Coach Mike Singletary said. "He did a nice job with his carries. He ran well, he cut well."
Gore needs 22 yards to become the first 49ers back to reach 1,000 rushing yards for three straight seasons.
The milestone is important to Gore, as well as to his offensive line, but Singletary said numbers will not play a factor in the running back's playing status for Sunday.
Singletary said health is the lone issue. His fear is that playing on a bad ankle could lead to another problem — perhaps a knee injury — and the 49ers are unwilling to put a personal milestone ahead of Gore's long-term safety.
"When he's healthy, he'll get more than his fair share of yards,'' Singletary said. "We need him to be smart, and I'm sure he will be."
