^NOW ASK YOURSELF WHY THAT IS?
Black isolationism is a double-edged sword. The concept of Black Power, which emerged in the 60's, was both a defensive and offensive response to racism. The positive was it turned what was once a badge of shame and inferiority, "being black in America", into a symbol of power and pride.
The downside is that a schism between blacks and whites was created in that pride. Any racially derived power always has the characteristic of division. One reason MLK was so well received is he did not attempt to use race for power. His approach was an appeal to even treatment and morality. Yes, he fought for black rights, however he benefitted Latinos/Chicanos, Asian Americans, etc.
Picture in your mind the characteristic "black" man and woman. What are your ideas of the racial composition of the majority of their friends and acquaintances? How do you imagine them doing financially? What kind of speech/slang would you expect them to use? How would they sound in conversation? Where would they live? What kind of music do they listen to?
Most black people will describe a person of lower income/socioeconomic class, having mostly if not exclusively black friends, using Ebonics heavily, residing in the inner city or very populous suburbs, and listening to the classically "black" american music styles: jazz, soul, hip-hop, r&b. Deviance from some of these standards threatens one with "whitewashed" status. And if you receive that label, you lose the "power" associated with being black among the community.
The Black psyche today owes much to the Black Power movement. Basically, if you lose your "blackness" through individuation, you lose the community connection and as well as the black connection; a risky proposition. Many black americans today identify first as a black person and second as an individual. Losing this fundamental identity is entering unknown territory....for one you are relying on whites and people of other races to not judge you based on race, and secondly you may not have much friendship/support waiting for you.
