Its not imitation of the South, it just shares some characteristics similar to those of the Crunk movement. Hyphy is something completely native to the streets of Oakland and the beatmakers of the Bay Area.

And of course the rappers of the Bay Area, I think everyone can agree some of the most common lyrics of the hyphy music are influenced by the lyrics and lifestyle of Mac Dre.

I think 40's relationship with Lil Jon spurs this perception of hyphy being imitation of crunk, but this relationship was before 40 got on the yellow bus and 40 used Lil Jons connections to mainstream hip hop to bring the Bay Area movement to the forefront. Lil Jon produced Tell Me When To go i think and thats him trying to imitate hyphy, not the other way around and other than that shit's all native.
