Humans that are spectators often underestimate the mental warfare that goes on in high level athletic competition. Everyone is 'good' physically at this level, so often it comes down to decision making and on the fly problem solving.
If Silva's ribs were really fucked up coming into the fight, and he knows he can take a punch, it's not too far fetched that he would allow Sonnen to tee off on him to the head to avoid taking shots to his ribs which may be more damaging to him. Crazy? Yes. Crazy like a fox? Yes. Human spectators don't usually look at things like that though.
Not saying that's what Silva was doing, and just because you heard the shot that he took doesn't mean it rocked him.
Pulled the sub out of his ass? Really? I mean, the dude came out in his BJJ Gi with his Black Belt. He's never done that before. So to me, that says he was lookin to submit this cat. He pulled off some shit Big Nog used to do in Pride. Who gave him his Black Belt? The Nogueiras. Who did Chael insult during the pre-fight hype? The Nogueiras. Who got pwnd by a Nogueira BJJ black belt? Chael Sonnen.

pwned? no... yes chael lost.. but no fucking way did he get "Pwned" punching someone in the face repeatedly for 4 1/2 rounds is far from it.. and yes he did pull the submission out of his ass... as did noguiera back in the day all those times.. Nog was known for getting beat the fuck up and using his bjj to get the wins.. and he was great at it.. but still its pulling a submission outta ur ass wen u were getting beat the fuck up on prior to it. im not dissing anderson by saying he pulled the sub outta his ass... but he did.. if that sub didnt work.. chael would be carrying that belt... and i kno who gave anderson his black belt... im notta new fan like some of the guys on here... i been watching mma for years now... i just hate the fact that everyone gotta rush and say OHH ANDERSON IS GODLIKE... HES THE BEST EVER ... HE NEVER GOT ROCKED HE PRETENDED TOO.. cmon... hes a fuckin human being... he got his ass beat... and used his BJJ to save his title.. it was a good fuckin win on his part.. and i will never take that away from him... but Chael proved he can hang.. and i wanna see a rematch

Sonnen was in control for 23 minutes and couldn't finish the fight. Anderson was in control for 10 seconds and finished it = pwnd
lol So Silva saying the plan was to submit Sonnen means nothing to you I guess? To say someone "pulled something out of their ass" does 2 things, imo
1) It attempts to discredit the accomplishment
2) It implies that there was never an intention to do what one "pulled out of their ass"
Go back and watch those Pride fights and watch the interviews before the fights (when they had interviews). Big Nog always stated that his game was the ground game, so NO he wasn't pulling shit out of his ass any more than Kobe Bryant pulls an up and under out of his ass.
If people think Anderson is "Godlike" so what? What does it mean to you? Let Anderson have his accomplishments and let people have their hero. To say something like "He used his BJJ to save his title" attempts to degrade the accomplishment. He fucking WON. He knew he was going to be on his back and he won fighting from his back. M... M... ok i read what u had to say... and ur taking it as im like dissing BJJ or sumthin.. imma M.M.A Fan.. i started out a boxing fan and really had to get used to watching grappling.. but over the past years i have really grown to appreciate it... the beauty of this sport is that anything can happen.. u take a guy (Chael) who is taking Anderson down at will.. rocking him with punches (standing and on the ground) frustrating the best middleweight champion the world has ever seen. and in the 5th round boom.. anderson locks on a triangle (which i say he pulled out of his ass only due to the fact that for the first 23 minutes he got manhandled) and u say im disrepecting or trying to take away from Andersons win?... where do u see where i said that? i never said.. Did you not watch how Anderson basically LET Chael hit him? Not just in that first round, but when they were on the ground as well.

Ed Soares Iffy On Immediate Silva-Sonnen Rematch, Elaborates On Anderson’s Rib Injury (Update)

Anderson Silva was supposed to teach Chael Sonnen a lesson Saturday night and move on to defend his middleweight title against Vitor Belfort sometime this fall. That picture however became unquestionably cloudy when Sonnen put his money where his mouth was and dominated Anderson Silva for 22 straight minutes.
Now the question the UFC has to answer is, do we move forward according to plan or call an audible and book the immediate rematch while the iron’s still hot?
Well, we certainly know what Chael Sonnen wants, but what about Anderson Silva? Ed Soares says he sees both sides of the immediate rematch argument, but seems to struggle with the idea of giving Chael another shot when he failed to close the deal the first time.
Not that it matters though because they’re going to do whatever the UFC wants anyways.
Soares said he hadn’t yet spoken to UFC president Dana White about who might get the next shot at Silva’s title, but added that, “it doesn’t matter what I want or what Anderson wants. It’s what the UFC wants.”
Meanwhile, Vitor Belfort, probably sensing that his title shot might be slipping away, hit Twitter and openly promised Dana White he would deliver “the fight of the century.”
There’s no easy answer in this debate. On one hand, this wasn’t a situation where Sonnen got robbed by the judges. Even though he dominated the fight, he lost. That’s an undeniable fact. So in that sense, yeah, Chael should at least have to go out and get a win before getting another chance. But on the other hand, the last time Vitor Belfort won a middleweight fight was 18 months ago in Affliction. Kind of hard to say he deserves it more than Sonnen after what Chael just did to Anderson. Then of course, there’s also the dark horse, Yushin Okami, lingering in the shadows. So, while there aren’t any clear cut answers, there aren’t really any wrong answers either. There’s definitely worse positions to be in.
If the immediate rematch is chosen, the next question will be, will we see the same fight? Or more specifically, will we see the same Anderson Silva? Anderson clearly didn’t perform like the masterful striker we’ve seen in the past, but was that because Chael did a brilliant job of beating him to the punch on the feet and shutting him down on the ground or did that rib injury Silva mentioned in the post-fight interview have something to do it? That’s a difficult question to answer, but after listening to Ed Soares elaborate on the injury, it certainly sounds like it was at least a little bit of the latter.
I hate the post-fight injury excuse explanation as much as the next guy, but this is Anderson Silva, not Tito Ortiz. He’s earned the benefit of the doubt, don’t you think?
Oh, and by the way Anderson reminds us that his Nogueira brothers BJJ black belt won him the fight, you know, the same black belt Sonnen likened to “a toy in a Happy Meal.”
Guess that means Team Black House got the last laugh after all.
Update: Anderson Silva’s BJJ coach says Anderson will be out of commission until February or March of next year due to a cracked rib.
