Chael Sonnen will get another shot at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva, as an immediate rematch of the UFC 117 headliner is in the works for January or February.
According to the LA Times’ Lance Pugmire, the matchup could headline the UFC’s traditional New Year’s event in early-January or may be pushed back to February’s Super Bowl card depending on Silva’s recovery from a rib injury.
At UFC 117 on Aug. 7, Sonnen delivered on his pre-fight promise to challenge the champ and dominated Silva for four-and-a-half rounds only to be submitted in the final minutes of a “Fight of the Year” contender.
With the comeback win, Silva (27-4) has now won 13-straight, including 12-0 in the UFC, while Sonnen (24-11-1) had previously won three in a row.
The news comes one day after middleweight contender Vitor Belfort announced that he would return in November, but wouldn’t be fighting Silva as previously expected.
