Giants non-tender Garko, remain aggressive looking for first baseman

The Giants did not tender a contract to 1B Ryan Garko by the midnight deadline, making the former Indian a free agent.
The Giants acquired Garko, a one-time catcher at Stanford, in July for Single-A left-hander Scott Barnes. He didn’t have nearly the impact the Giants hoped and soon fell out of favor with Manager Bruce Bochy.
Garko could’ve made $2-3 million in arbitration, and a couple days ago, GM Brian Sabean said he didn’t want to pay that kind of money to someone they couldn’t envision as an everyday player. Now, obviously, we know they didn’t forecast many at-bats for Garko next season.
The Giants are looking at Nick Johnson or Adam LaRoche to play first — or sign Mark DeRosa to play third and move Pablo Sandoval to first.
I’m told the Giants have offered contracts to all three free agents, but as the winter meetings ended, they weren’t close on the dollar figures. LaRoche, for example, wanted a three-year, $31.5 million deal.
So this could take awhile.
The club tendered contracts to its other arbitration-eligible free agents: Jonathan Sanchez, Brian Wilson, Brandon Medders and some guy named Tim Lincecum.
Non-tenders from other clubs increase the Giants’ pool of free-agent choices. Colorado third baseman Garrett Atkins is among them. Tampa Bay catcher Dioner Navarro is not; he and the Rays worked out a one-year contract.
