i hate this whole "not playing for a non-contender" thing...

We want playoffs with the pitching we have. If we show we are playoff contenders, we can bag better free agents in the future. We overpay for guys like Rowand because stars don't want to come to a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 6 years.
I agree, Dubb, but Im just sayin...

Bonds did it, Vladimir Guerrero could do it, Adrian Gonzalez can do it.

i question Guerreros ability to do it.............IMO he is a DH......and about 1/2 the hitter that he used to be.............Vlad is a hitter that would get half of his hits OUTSIDE the strike zone...........as reflexes and instincts go with age, so does that ability to hit pitches you arent supposed to hit..........i can see Vlad fading away within the next 3-5 years.......he looks way older than his age.............

Gonzalez is young and strong......and has proven he can hit at PETCO...so i guess he could hit anywhere...........

Giants non-tender Garko, remain aggressive looking for first baseman

Posted by Andrew Baggarly on December 12th, 2009 at 8:55 pm | Categorized as Uncategorized

The Giants did not tender a contract to 1B Ryan Garko by the midnight deadline, making the former Indian a free agent.

The Giants acquired Garko, a one-time catcher at Stanford, in July for Single-A left-hander Scott Barnes. He didn’t have nearly the impact the Giants hoped and soon fell out of favor with Manager Bruce Bochy.

Garko could’ve made $2-3 million in arbitration, and a couple days ago, GM Brian Sabean said he didn’t want to pay that kind of money to someone they couldn’t envision as an everyday player. Now, obviously, we know they didn’t forecast many at-bats for Garko next season.

The Giants are looking at Nick Johnson or Adam LaRoche to play first — or sign Mark DeRosa to play third and move Pablo Sandoval to first.

I’m told the Giants have offered contracts to all three free agents, but as the winter meetings ended, they weren’t close on the dollar figures. LaRoche, for example, wanted a three-year, $31.5 million deal.

So this could take awhile.

The club tendered contracts to its other arbitration-eligible free agents: Jonathan Sanchez, Brian Wilson, Brandon Medders and some guy named Tim Lincecum.

Non-tenders from other clubs increase the Giants’ pool of free-agent choices. Colorado third baseman Garrett Atkins is among them. Tampa Bay catcher Dioner Navarro is not; he and the Rays worked out a one-year contract.
I'd take LaRoche (not at that price though) over Johnson anyday...a LaRoche/Sandoval/Uggla heart of the order would pretty good...

Attkins is younger than Derosa and already used to the nl west, Derosa is super utility guy though. i just dont see what people see in Nick Johnson though.

Nick Johnson gets on base, high OBP. You put him infront of Sandoval and someone else you'd get a run or two out of that. He's got some power, the major downside is he's not able to stay healthy. He's never played 150 games.

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, free agent catcher Bengie Molina is seeking a three-year deal from the Mets.
Molina is obviously taking a look around at the two-year contracts that guys like Ivan Rodriguez and Jason Kendall are inking. He certainly feels he's more valuable and it'd be hard to argue against that. The catcher hit just .265/.285/.442 this past season but mashed 20 home runs.

Bengie is a guy I'd want on my team anyday. Its a shame the Giants don't want to sign him but at the same time its a business world too.

At the end of the day, all I know is Bengie Molina was a GOOD GIANT.
