Good pickup! He is obviously towards the end of his career but I think this will be good. Worse case he can come in for relief if he can't cut it in the starting lineup.

they are just starting rumors to make SF fans think they are trying, while at the same time trying to run up the price the dodgers offer manny in hopes that it will stop us from signing another Starting pitcher because we over extended on manny

Giants Eyeing Crede
By Tim Dierkes [January 1 at 10:54pm CST]

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman:

The Giants appear to be taking a close look at free-agent third baseman Joe Crede. They've reviewed Crede's medical report and don't appear discouraged about pursuing him.

It seems likely that Crede can be had on a one-year deal; Scott Boras has done many such contracts to rebuild value. He'd be another excellent short-term addition for the Giants, who are remaking the team through smart free agent signings. Crede would complement new shortstop Edgar Renteria, who is well below average on plays to his right.

well unless any trades are parlayed by sabean, it looks like our three options are

-manny (lf)
-crede (3b)
-ty wigginton (3b)

getting manny makes alot of sense because after 2009, $22 million comes off the books in the form of molina, roberts, and winn so taking on the money this season would be a 1 year deal, unless sabean can recapture some old magic and deal roberts and/or winn..

winn most likely not because giants may sign him to an extension, according to their website..

wigginton would be a solid addition, but i just dont know if hes got the pop..i mean, he hit 24 hr's last year, but pac bell is a big park, and his numbers might drop..if u dont believe me ask mike krukow, he said on a telecast last season that he estimated rowand lost 12-16 homeruns because of the foul territory there!!

I guess they "offered" Manny a 4 year contract.... unofficial

Giants Offer Slugger Manny Ramirez 4-Year Deal
Reporting
Dennis O'Donnell
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ―

The San Francisco Giants are pursuing free-agent slugger Manny Ramirez and have offered him a four-year deal, a well-connected source told CBS 5.

Financial terms of the contract offer were not immediately known. The deal was said by the source to contain incentives for the third year of the contract and a club option for the fourth.

In addition, the Denver Post newspaper quoted a Major League Baseball insider as saying the Giants were "quietly making an aggressive play" for Ramirez.

The chances of the Giants signing Ramirez, a 36-year-old left fielder, were unclear. A team spokesperson told CBS 5, "it's not happening."

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently withdrew a two-year, $45 million offer they presented to keep Ramirez, who helped lift them into postseason play with an NL West title this past season.

Dodger officials said the team took their deal off the bargaining table after not hearing back from Ramirez's camp.

Calls by CBS 5 to Ramirez's agent, who is known for trying to pit teams against each other in a bidding war, were not returned and his publicist had no knowledge of any negotiations with the Giants.

as long as manny doesnt go to the dodgers i could give 2 shits where he ends up. BUT..... i sure will take him!!!!!! 40 hr's in a giants jersey would do wonders for us!
40 HR's??? you must be dreaming.....i cant recall manny ever hitting 40 Hr's in any season and he has played his whole life at Jacobs and Fenway (both hitters parks)
