just read this..

Needing offense and an overhaul of the left side of their infield, the San Francisco Giants believe they are closing in on signing shortstop Edgar Renteria and have discussed a trade that would send left-handed starter Jonathan Sanchez to the Florida Marlins in exchange for third baseman Jorge Cantu.

Giants on verge of signing Renteria

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants appear poised to sign free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria, perhaps as early as Thursday.

And they probably won't stop there in their efforts to upgrade their offense.

Jeff Lane, Renteria's agent, confirmed Wednesday night that he had just returned from San Francisco, where he negotiated with Giants officials.

"We're very close to a deal," said Lane, who declined further comment.

Giants are considering making a play for Sabathia

Just how badly does CC Sabathia want to pitch at home in California? We may find out very soon, according to a report in the New York Daily News. Sources say the San Francisco Giants are considering a play for Sabathia, although their only hope of landing the big lefthander would be for him to take an extreme hometown discount.

According to sources, the Giants are contemplating an offer of more than the $100 million the Brewers have bid for Sabathia for five years, but far less than the six years and $140 million the Yankees have offered.

Sabathia hails from Vallejo, Calif., roughly 30 miles outside of San Francisco.

Despite recent reports that the Angels had decided to move on without Mark Teixeira and make a hard charge at Sabathia, Los Angeles GM Tony Reagins told MLB.com that "there was nothing to" those stories, adding that Teixeira remains the club's top priority.

The Yankees and Brewers remain the only teams with concrete offers on the table for Sabathia. The winter meetings begin Monday in Las Vegas, where things should start shaking out with many of the big name free agents.

Giants uncertain on Sabathia
CC Sabathia | Brewers | Interested: Angels? Yankees, Giants?
The Giants continue to debate the idea of signing CC Sabathia, and they don't expect a resolution at the winter meetings this week, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
San Francisco signed Bary Zito to a $126 million deal two offseasons ago and now must decide if they wish to make perhaps an even more lucrative offer to the free agent pitcher.
"We don't want to close things off," Giants President Larry Baer told the newspaper, acknowledging the risk of investing a quarter of a billion dollars in two pitchers. "In the end, everybody would have to feel comfortable that he's the right guy and agree it's the right thing to do. None of those firm decisions have been made. In this end, I have no idea where it's going to go."
The signing of Sabathia could be viewed as a boost to ticket sales in tough economic times.
Baer acknowledged to the Mercury News: "We just have to stay focused on our goals. We want to take the step in 2009 to be better than .500. Whether that takes us to contention or not, we'll see. We can't close ourselves off from any possibilities, but we won't sacrifice the long-term building process we've already begun."
There has been little movement with Sabathia since the Yankees offered the 2007 American League Cy Young winner a six-year, $140 million contract on November 14. Various reports claim that Yankees GM Brian Cashman planned to meet with Sabathia in Las Vegas this weekend.

LAS VEGAS -- In the Bellagio Hotel Sunday night, free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia ran into general manager Ned Colletti and told him he wants to be a Dodger, Colletti said Monday

http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/dodgers_might_go_longterm_for.html
Colletti said the club has been told that Sabathia wants to play in California and for the Dodgers.
Coletti's just trying to drive the price up, cause he knows the Giants are interested and CC's wife wants him in the Bay Area...lol...Colletti created this story.

Bob Melvin says otherwise to that Coletti comment.

And the Dodgers – well, Colletti, with what came out as an off-handed remark, stirred the industry: “I ran into him last night. He said, ‘I want to be a Dodger.’ ”

“Ned Colletti said that?” Melvin said, when apprised of Colletti’s comments. “Was he kidding?”

Here's what Sabean had to say about Colletti's comments...

As for Sabathia, Colletti ran into the 6-foot-7 pitcher in the lobby at the Bellagio and, "He said, 'I want to be a Dodger,' " Colletti said, smiling.

Sabean wasn't amused when relayed the story, saying, "I guess he wants to be a Dodger. If he bumped into (someone from) Anaheim, he wants to be an Angel."

And if he came across a Giants official?

"He wants to be a Giant," Sabean said. "That's what it means."

The San Francisco Giants appear to be the latest team to make their pitch to free agent

The San Jose Mercury News reported on Tuesday that Sabathia's team and Giants representatives met on Monday night and were planning on meeting again after the winter meetings.

That would preclude a quick resolution to the New York Yankees' reported six-year, $140 million offer to the left-hander.

Sabathia and/or his team have met with the Yankees (twice), the Milwaukee Brewers and the Boston Red Sox at the winter meetings in Las Vegas.

Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said on Monday that Sabathia told him that he wants to be a Dodger, but the team has not publicly made an offer.

Sabathia grew up in Southern California and has been building a home there. In the past he has expressed a desire to play for a West Coast club. In their first season without Barry Bonds, the Giants posted a 72-90 record and finished fourth in the National League West.

On a side note, lol @ espn saying he grew up in southern cal

The fuckin Dodgers blew it!!!!! CC wanted to be a dodger and they did not get serious with him. Well sucks for the dodgers but atleast I can still be friendly with CC since he did not become a dodger!!!!!!!! I already told my daughter if she marries a dodger fan she better hope they can afford the wedding.

There was never a chance well there was a .01% that cc would become a giant. He never wanted to sign here in the bay cuz he knows the distraction of pitching at home.

Giants GM Brian Sabean said that he has reconsidered on Rich Aurilia and would like to re-sign the free agent.

To think that we were concerned about the Giants' offense. Aurilia did hit lefties well last season, but he ended up with way too many at-bats, 407 to be exact. Viewed strictly as a backup, he'd be fine. However, it seems best not to give Bruce Bochy the opportunity to overuse him again.
