Giants prospects swept the Class A Starting Pitcher of the Year awards:

  • Tim Alderson (Class A Advanced)
  • Madison Bumgarner (Class A)
  • Kyle Nicholson (Class A Short-Season)

The Giants bought out his arbitration years (probably would have qualified as a Super Two) when they signed Cain to his four year deal.

thankz for the infof ReKz..i kinda thought that was the deal but figured if you or discus posted it it would be more accurate..

"WFAN in New York reports that the Giants have agreed to terms with Edgar Renteria on a two-year, $18 million contract.

Renteria became a free agent when the Tigers declined his $12 million option for 2009 and reportedly will now replace Omar Vizquel in San Francisco. Renteria has declined defensively and hit just .270/.317/.382 last season for his lowest OPS since 2001, but a return to the NL in 2006 helped rejuvenate his career after he flopped with the Red Sox. Counting on another bounce back is iffy given that he's now 33 years old, but at $9 million per season on a two-year commitment he's a decent value."

this is interesting...dont forget the giants apparently have been trying to go after furcal also.

"
Rafael Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, said he is still talking to the Giants and doesn't believe the team has a deal with Edgar Renteria.

"Unless the Giants did it in the last 10 minutes, which I don't think they did, they weren't close," Kinzer told the San Francisco Chronicle. The Giants have denied that a Renteria deal is done."

"Edgar Renteria's agent said the report of the shortstop signing a two-year deal with the Giants is completely false.

Agent Barry Meister confirmed that Renteria and the Giants have been in talks, but he denied that anything is even close to being done. Other suitors for Renteria may not put in official bids until after the Tigers decline to offer him arbitration next month. The Cardinals, for instance, would lose a first-round pick if they signed Renteria now."

AN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants took another step toward bolstering their bullpen Wednesday, agreeing to terms on a $2.75 million, one-year contract with free agent reliever Bob Howry.

The Giants had been looking for a reliable right-handed reliever and filled another spot with Howry, who was declined salary arbitration by the Chicago Cubs on Monday. San Francisco already signed reliever Jeremy Affeldt last month.

The 35-year-old Howry, 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, went 7-5 with a 5.35 ERA in 72 appearances and 70 2/3 innings for the Cubs in 2008, his 11th major league season.

The Giants' relievers posted a 4.45 ERA last season. They gave up 62 homers, the third-most in the NL, while pitching the fourth-fewest innings at 487 1/3.

Howry can earn an additional $500,000 based on games, getting $100,000 each for 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75 appearances. He can earn $1 million based on games finished: $100,000 for 45, $200,000 for 50, $300,000 for 55 and $400,000 for 60.

Agent: Renteria, Giants closing in on deal
Updated: December 3, 2008, 3:49 PM ET

The agent for shortstop Edgar Renteria said Wednesday that he's making significant progress toward a deal that would bring the five-time All-Star to the San Francisco Giants.

Edgar Renteria

Renteria

"We're working on it and we're certainly much, much closer, but nothing is done," said agent Barry Meister.

A source told ESPN.com that Renteria is looking at a contract in the two-year, $18 million range with San Francisco. WFAN radio in New York reported 10 days ago that Renteria had agreed to a deal with the Giants. But Meister had characterized that initial report as untrue.

Renteria, 33, is a .290 hitter in 13 big league seasons with the Florida Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers. He's won two Gold Gloves and three Silver Slugger Awards in his career and produced the winning hit off Charles Nagy in Game 7 of Florida's 1997 World Series victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Renteria hit a disappointing .270 with a .317 on-base percentage for the Tigers this season, and Detroit declined to offer him salary arbitration earlier this week. As a result, the Giants will not owe the Tigers any draft pick compensation in return for signing Renteria.

Last year Omar Vizquel, Emmanuel Burriss, Ivan Ochoa and Brian Bocock all spent time at shortstop for manager Bruce Bochy. San Francisco's shortstop contingent ranked 29th among the 30 major league teams with a .576 on base-slugging percentage. Only the Baltimore Orioles' shortstops were worse.

The Giants and Oakland Athletics have been mentioned as leading contenders for Rafael Furcal, widely regarded as the top shortstop on the free-agent market this winter. But Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark earlier this week that he doesn't expect Furcal to sign with a club before the winter meetings, which begin Monday in Las Vegas.

From Yahoo

Needing offense and an overhaul of the left side of their infield, the San Francisco Giants believe they are closing in on signing shortstop Edgar Renteria and have discussed a trade that would send left-handed starter Jonathan Sanchez to the Florida Marlins in exchange for third baseman Jorge Cantu.

Sanchez, 26, was promising but ever inconsistent in 29 starts in 2008 for the Giants, whose offseason strategy is to part with some young pitching to upgrade one of the worst offenses in baseball. Released by the Reds last December, Cantu, also 26, turned his career around with 29 home runs, 41 doubles and 95 RBI for the surprising Marlins last season.

The Giants dabbled in the possibilities of adding Rafael Furcal or Orlando Cabrera, but seem determined to sign the 33-year-old Renteria, who struggled in Detroit but has always hit better in the National League. The Giants and Renteria’s agent have denied several recent reports they’d agreed to a two-year, $18-million contract.

Giants appear to be favorite to land Burrell

Getty Images
Pat Burrell, who was not offered arbitration by the Philadelphia Phillies, is believed Ito be courted by the Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants, according to MLB.com.
All things being equal, San Francisco would appear to have the edge, assuming the outfielder likes the idea of playing close to home — he grew up in the Bay Area — and being reunited with his good friend Aaron Rowand.
