Giants Beat: Aurilia offered minor league deal
(02-07) 17:43 PST -- In a sign the Giants are not expecting to make a big infield splash via trade or free agency, they have offered a minor-league contract to Rich Aurilia worth about $1 million if he makes the team. Aurilia, who just completed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants, would provide a right-handed alternative at first base to Travis Ishikawa or John Bowker against lefty pitchers.
General manager Brian Sabean said he extended the offer Thursday. In a phone interview from his Phoenix home, Aurilia sounded as though he wants to return.
"We're trying to counter-proposal them a little bit and see what we can come up with," Aurilia said. "To have someone like me would be of value to them. Hopefully we can iron out a few things. I'm hoping to nail this down."
Sabean has been stymied by a lack of impact corner infielders in free agency and his unwillingness to trade for players a year away from free agency. However, Sabean said, he has the financial flexibility to make deals with teams distressed by the economy that find later this spring or this season they need to move good players with larger contracts.
Manny front: New special assistant Will Clark drew applause at FanFest when he told fans the Giants can live without him.
"Manny's a great hitter, but we do not need a one-dimensional player," Clark said. "We don't need a guy who just hits. I'll deal with a player in the minors and teach him to hit the other way and play defense. Manny's a great hitter, but as far as Manny being Manny, throw that out the window."
