Rich Aurilia Still Talking To Giants
By Tim Dierkes [January 22 at 11:46pm CST]

Andrew Baggarly has a little bit of info about free agent first baseman Rich Aurilia. Aurilia's agent is having ongoing conversations with the Giants, and the team considers him their top option for a right-handed bat off the bench. A one-year deal seems likely, but Baggarly isn't sure what's holding up the process.

Aurilia, 37, hit .283/.332/.413 in 440 plate appearances while playing the infield corners. He earned $4.5MM, so a significant pay cut is in order.

Giants reach pact with Uribe
Veteran utility man agrees to Minor League deal

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants have acquired a former Chicago White Sox infielder, but it's not Joe Crede.

San Francisco announced on Thursday that free-agent utility man Juan Uribe has signed a one-year Minor League contract that includes an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.

Uribe, 29, has spent the past five seasons with the White Sox -- teaming with Crede, the free-agent third baseman San Francisco has pursued.

Uribe, a .253 lifetime hitter in eight seasons with Colorado and Chicago, likely will be a reserve if he makes the Opening Day roster. But he can provide a veteran presence at second base, where the list of candidates consists of the relatively inexperienced Emmanuel Burriss, Kevin Frandsen and Eugenio Velez.

Uribe also can spell shortstop Edgar Renteria if necessary. Though Uribe played only four games at shortstop last season, he has appeared there in 768 of his 986 Major League games. He also can play third, enabling him to complement Pablo Sandoval if the near-rookie starts there.

Giants Beat: Aurilia offered minor league deal

(02-07) 17:43 PST -- In a sign the Giants are not expecting to make a big infield splash via trade or free agency, they have offered a minor-league contract to Rich Aurilia worth about $1 million if he makes the team. Aurilia, who just completed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants, would provide a right-handed alternative at first base to Travis Ishikawa or John Bowker against lefty pitchers.

General manager Brian Sabean said he extended the offer Thursday. In a phone interview from his Phoenix home, Aurilia sounded as though he wants to return.

"We're trying to counter-proposal them a little bit and see what we can come up with," Aurilia said. "To have someone like me would be of value to them. Hopefully we can iron out a few things. I'm hoping to nail this down."

Sabean has been stymied by a lack of impact corner infielders in free agency and his unwillingness to trade for players a year away from free agency. However, Sabean said, he has the financial flexibility to make deals with teams distressed by the economy that find later this spring or this season they need to move good players with larger contracts.

Manny front: New special assistant Will Clark drew applause at FanFest when he told fans the Giants can live without him.

"Manny's a great hitter, but we do not need a one-dimensional player," Clark said. "We don't need a guy who just hits. I'll deal with a player in the minors and teach him to hit the other way and play defense. Manny's a great hitter, but as far as Manny being Manny, throw that out the window."

^^ Rowand is not bad, his numbers lifetime arent bad.. Crede can be solid when healthy.. which is almost always never.. but he says his back shouldnt be a problem.. they sign crede, sandoval goes to 1st with ishikawa and him sharing that position.. meanwhile we get posey up to the big show probably later this year if everything goes good. Then Angel Villalona at 3rd base, Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson in the pitching rotation/bullpen.
