this is interesting shit right here.....I don't think a lot of people realize this
Only twice since 1981 have the Chargers used a first-round draft choice on a running back, and in the cases of both LaDainian Tomlinson (2001) and Ryan Mathews (2010), San Diego made a trade within 24 hours of the draft to set up those No. 1 picks.
Unfair as it might otherwise be to draw any comparison between the much-accomplished Tomlinson and Mathews, though, you might actually be surprised at how close some of their numbers stand at the same point their NFL careers.
With Tomlinson now on the other side for the match-up with the New York Jets, Sunday's game marks the 18th professional game for Mathews, who was sidelined for seven games his rookie season and considered a disappointment. But the youngster is catching up fast.
Mathews has carried the ball 243 times for the Chargers for 1,091 yards -- an average rounded off to 4.5 yards per -- and caught it 42 times for 406 yards. In his first 17 games with the Chargers, Tomlinson rushed 360 times for 1,350 yards, an average of 3.75. He caught 20 more passes (62) than Mathews, but for fewer yards, 406 by Mathews to Tomlinson's 367.
Bottom line: Tomlinson scored 11 touchdowns, Mathews 10.
“I think he’s doing a great job,” said Tomlinson, asked Thursday about the young player who essentially replaced him in San Diego. “Obviously, he has to share some time with Mike Tolbert. But I think Mathews is doing a great job. He’s doing everything they ask him to do. He’s running well, he’s catching the ball, he’s playing tough, playing hurt at times, doing a great job.”
For whatever it's worth, too, Tomlinson played his entire rookie season with a 5-11 team that lost its last nine games of the season. Mathews entered the NFL with one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL. In both cases, however, the guy calling all the plays for the Chargers was Norv Turner.
"I've looked up to (Tomlinson) every day for a long time," said Mathews. "It'll be cool to finally get to see him play for the first time in my life.
