This is why E-40 wont flop. Cuz he fuckin makes hits.
This is why Clyde Carson wont flop. Cuz he fuckin makes hits.
This is why the movement CRIPPLED... EVERYBODY STOPPED MAKIN HITS.

None of these people have hits. Flo-Rida has a fucking hit. Rianna's Umbrella was a fucking hit. Soilja Boy's Super Man was a fucking hit. 40's biggest hit was probally "Sprinkle Me" and that was damn near made in the 80's! Clyde doesn't even have an album out for a hit to come off of. Now I think Clyde CAN make a hit, but it hasn't happend yet. The Closest thing to a hit to come out of the Bay in the last 10 years was "Closer" by Goaplle.

You lost all credibility right there. because if you want to include r&B then i got one name for you keyshia cole, damn near 4 million sold in the day and age of bootlegging and the internet. and closer by goaplle didn't sell ten percent of what 40 sold. she might have done 50k and 40 is well over 500k.

U & Dat......

without T-Pain....40 wouldn't have sold as much. That feature alone..along with the production helped his album sell(Tell Me When To Go was a regional & west coast hit).

I kind of lost track of this thread but i read the article and i honestly feel the reason the bay is in the state it is in right now isn't because of the radio stations we are blaming, it's mostly because of US.

The reason 106.1 kmel plays the music its playing is because a majority of our community demands it. the reason wild 94.9 plays the music it plays is the because the community demands it. the bay area as a majority is a copy cat region.

You can honestly tell it is a copy cat region. look at hyphy itself. it gained popularity...everybody caught wind of it..everyone wanted to be hyphy. EVERYONE wanted to support hyphy. we actually had something to claim as our own, we embraced it..until it died out!
Notice how when everyone caught a sniff of mac dre..he even became popular with people who didn't even know shit about him! It seems like we our fighting so hard for a identity...seems like we are fighting to hard to be noticed on a nationwide scale...

Our community doesn't buy albums, we don't even support each other. why would our radio station want to support artist in our own community, if our own community doesn't even support! makes no fucking sense! no wonder our radio stations don't support, we don't support! i'd honestly say 10% of the bay supports its artist..it takes a die hard fan to even be a supporter... and thats a shame! i can't honestly say if its because the quality of music we make..if it's because our artist aren't too marketable..etc. etc.
in my honest opinion not too many of the artist out here are marketable on a national scale, BUT THATS MY OPINION. it obviously seems like KMEL agrees. I can say one thing, there is quality music..there is ALOT of talent!

Regardless..give us opportunity..gives us chance. Dont filter the radio with just this commercial bullshit! There are hungry artist. There's artist who eat breathe sleep for an opportunity and represent this region and they aren't even given a chance. Theres plenty of talent, and theres too many hours in the day to not expose some of our talented artists. All it takes is ONE voice. Boycott..protest.. something needs to be done for the bay to be given an opportunity..something needs to be done so our music can be heard and given its proper chance.

Me personally... never really listened to KMEL, never will listen again.. until something changes.

hyphy was dead in water from the start.

the bay has talent but not the understanding. the ones that do havent dropped nothing but singles trying to get on. they know whats up. the real artists with support of the streets could make some noise but need to get away from the skeeming and put together a real plan, music wise. the rest of you bandwagon 9-5 ers by day, hyphy go dum hustlers by night need to quit fucking up the game and support it by spending 13.99. if you really got that drive and talent people will tell you.

I agree. Seems like the bay has gotten lazy. Maybe because everyone feels we never got "our chance" so it's owed to us. All i see now a days is lazy promotion, weak radio singles that everyone "excepts" to blow up. What happened to quality music..the grind? the hard work and dedication behind making good music, promoting yourself. Originality? It truly lacks, and it shows. Your only outlet isn't the radio station. It's the people. Then, MAYBE..that will open more doors for you.

I remember I looked at the bay as a region with all different types of personality, different swagger. Now it's all the same.

Great article, how come the Team didnt blow then? wasnt Big Von cool with them?

Im pretty sure Goapele sold more then that with her first album, Closer was also on The Honey Sound track aswell so that prob affected sales.

I think Hyphy served its purpose which was to get majors looking at the bay which it is, alot of Bay Artists (hyphy and Non Hyphy) have meet with majors about possible deals, most are refusing them as the money they make aint gonna be that good compared to the indie money they are seeing at the momment ( after re-coup and all that shit ofcourse).

i feel clyde carson can take it there. i would see that cat all over the place 3-4 years ago. he makes radio friendly music and potential singles but lacks sales in our region more than likely. if some one was willing to invest $50,000
in a bay project or artist even if you dont make any money off cd sales i would say do it. no artist is eating so to speak regardless of what you may think. it sounds good. unless of course e-40 and too short. are they independent? what needs to happen is yall need to get behind an artist, really go to rasputins and buy his cd. support someone with potential. not your homiwe cause hes saying your block on a track. music is a business not the streets. its definately street influenced. with no support in our region, what does that tell you about these artists?

hmmm. interesting posts. Since my letter was printed in the SF Weekly in response to the article this week, EA in other blogs. etc. stated it was more than just KMEL, however the peoples station played a huge part. For those of us in the bay that do business, for producers, engineers, artists, dj's and dancers, we are not in a slump. We are in a economic blockade. Pure and Simple. I'm going back to the d-boy/d-girl days with my beanie and nikey tennis shoes. Wit about 20 others and make it happen. The bay also is suffering from doing bad business, but hell that was in the 90's why we all still gotta suffer.

Mac dre was the best artist out of the bay .. he was in his prime before he passed . It's tough to make it the game right know.. don't get me wrong the bay got a grip tight artist but.. believe it or not Dre was the real King/Ambassador of the bay he had the hardest shit.. he was the one who came up with all the thizz movement.. he made the hyphy movement big on the street level not mainstream..and if you don't get to the people in the streets than itz a wrap..
