i never received a degree in Marketing... i didn't pursue it.. I was done with school after 2 semesters.

But i've been involved with enough corporate and indie label stuff to be able to effectively market a product with any budget. It's a challenge, but hey life's a challenge

The only problem with that is, without the actual DEGREE, companies look at you like a fuckoff who couldnt handle the work. And--Hey, this isnt me speaking! this is the people with the millions of dollars of funding that everyone and their mother's record company is after!

I dont care HOW many years it takes me...im gettin a BA in marketing and a BA in languages.......ate a proxima... :)

the presence of degrees on the table doesn't make a person a virtual lock for a position. It helps no doubt, but there's people who are book smart that lack common sense and other qualities needed to get certain jobs done.

^^^^^ And college is meant to weed out those weak, book-smart people. This is only my first quarter, and people are droppin out left and right...its almost sad, in a way!

Im really not trying to sound like an ass when i say all of this....but if i was in a position to hire someone (or more importantly, invest in or fund a label/ceo), i myself wouldnt even look TWICE at someone without a degree vs someone WITH a degree. The shit is DIFFICULT, to say the least, and its not only taking marketing classes...to get the degree, you have to take calculus, history, politics, english composition, etc. classes, so it makes you an ALL-AROUND candidate vs a longshot. (Sergeant Hustle could probably speak on this!)

Marketing knowledge is cool....marketing classes is even cooler....but without the degree, the best you can hope to do is sell 50k units before you get ANY kind of serious funding, with or without experience!

either that, or im delusional....pardon that!

Erm...so basically, if i confused anybody....

CEOs without degres ARE NOT ALLOWED (in my opinion) to BITCH when their artists arent acting as planned, because, basically, that makes the CEO a big-shot without any REAL credentials (key word) to be tellin ANYBODY what to do, let alone, how much money they should be gettin!!

I'm ridin' for MS!!! That's my folks.......

Tadou......you're a fuckin' idiot. I'm not goin' to speak for MS......but I know him personally......and the man is VERY involved in the music business. More so than you could probably EVER imagine. So quit tryin' to belittle him with your fuckin' corny-ass statements about mufuckas NEEDING degress to have a right to bitch about shit.

That's like me saying that all you corny-ass WANNA-BE rappers should have degrees in communication and business to be able to GET a contract.

Or try this one on for size.......you NEED to go to a REAL college like the University of Washington!!! Not Aberdeen Community College......where there are only 300 students.....lol.

I'm speakin on Washington State University.....a pac 10 real deal college...and I'm gettin my ba in marketing as well....Tadou I feel you on the power of an education and the credentials it gives you...I'm startin to gain a lot of respect for you.

That shit tadou says is real though......the difference between someone who has a degree and someone who has not earnred a degree is drastic as fuck...people do look at you like you were too lasy or too stupid to go the work done....that refelcts your attitude in the real business world.....Can you get it done?

Yeah but Code you havent been around long enough to see all his bullshit antics, im not hating on you Tadou shit is cool now. Im not really agreeing about being a CEO and not having a degree. MS has been putting in major work for many years, though I have never met him I look up to him and Robb a great deal for all they have done in establishing their business. Killa Valley is one of the most respected and up-and-coming labels in the bay, do you think it was luck that they can run a successful record label. They arent the first to do this, many people have come from the streets and have that natural born hustling and know how to organize things in this case a record label, so the myth about being a good CEO and having a degree doesnt always turn out to be true. I think you got to live this shit up and actually experience it before you can truly talk about it. Just out of curiosity Tadou why are you going to Aberdeen Community when you could go to a better or what so people call a prestigious college like Washington? If your the fucking einstein of the board then why didnt they offer you a scholarship or something?

since when was a marketing degree required to be a label owner?
How's a bookworm gonna tell me how to run a business. A book can't educate you in real life situations. You have to come to that point and handle it to the best of your ability.... but hey you over there tryin to preach to me about how big your education is and you only in the first semester and go to a community college?

one luv to D-Sane and Kaoz206 for the support and real talk ...

IM not talking about Crackhead Bill with 500 dollars to let you borrow wanting you to have a degree.....im talking about MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR corporations. Something that is BEYOND your perception, because you will never wont ever touch them with a 39 1/2 foot pole....homie. Its time you realize that some of us will be rich and have millions REGUARDLESS of what the rap game has to offer. I, for instance, rap as an AUXILLARY source of income.

And dont get mad at me because you can sense talent & work ethic, but wouldnt know committment & dedication if it slapped you upside the head with a singapore cane. Thats on you.

1) its grays harbor college, 2) theres a few thousand people from around the harbor and areas like tacoma, too, and 3) most of the classes TRANSFER AT EQUAL CREDIT TO COLLEGES LIKE UW.......now, what were you saying again? THat shoreline CC was somehow more special or somethin? "Riiiiiiight", as you might say.

Again.....for their label to go to the NEXT LEVEL--major funding, nationwide ad campaigns, etc etc--they will need DEGREE-HOLDING type of credentials. I dont shit on the next man for making something out of nothing, but you have to think realistically.....and running a gangsta rap label, ESPECIALLY without a degree, isnt going to open a hell of a lot of doors!

Just out of curiosity Tadou why are you going to Aberdeen Community when you could go to a better or what so people call a prestigious college like Washington? If your the fucking einstein of the board then why didnt they offer you a scholarship or something?
I have a strong sense of community...i dont sell out my city unless i have to, and right now, i dont NEED to for what im studying. I have Spanish classes here, French & Latin classes here, Business classes....every kind of class i need. Im trying to get my career off the ground as well, and since some people dont seem to realize that concerts out here draw 300 off the top no matter HOW shitty the line-up, im about to take advantage of this untapped territory. 2003, Debut Album 2-CD set w/VCD--watch for it!

Entiende usted espanol? Parla l'italiano? et francais? Voce falas portugues com seus amigos em tuo tempo livre? Est pulchra sorella tuus?......Thats right. While you're busy out there pushing in upwards of 334 units a month, im over here learning LIFE-LONG skills that could net 100k a year, off the top, starting wages at age 23 or 24.

How does it feel to go to college and drop out before you get a degree?....i wouldnt know. (Just remember...you started the insults...not me. I gives a fuck who you are, you're just another 5 character internet handle to me.)

my thoughts

as much as i admire tadous thoughts on people needing an education in the music industry....its flat out wrong.....One thing I can say I have learned is that this game is about WHO you know, not WHAT you know...its sad but true.....no one gives a fuck if you got a degree from harvard, they wanna know how many records youve sold.....no one cares if you got a md or phd, they want SALES, and you get credibilty by being involved....

As far as hiphop is concerned as well, If u look back on MOST producers/rappers they learned by "on the job training" not by going to school.....I am sure their are a few exceptions though...

on that note....heres a thought....how do people feel about the idea of a "minor leagues" with labels? like, a sublabel where the labels put out artists, but on a smaller scale till they have a fan base and are ready....I would love to know peoples thoughts on that...

one love

ALL MY ARTIST ARE MY HOMIES

REGARDLESS OF THIS RAP GAME , MEANING BEFORE I DROPPED MY FIRST ALBUM LUNI COLEONE (in the mouth of madness) WITH BIG HOLLIS WE ALL WERE FOLKS REGARDLESS I ALWAYS HAD BREAD SO MADE SURE WE ATE EVERYDAY ANYWAY . LUNI - IROCC - GANGSTA DRE - SKEE 64 - D-MACK - YOUNG LUCK - MADDOG WHEREVER WE WENT I COVERED MOST EVERYTHING JUST BASED ON MY POCKETS WERE FULL BUT EVEN WHEN TIMES WERE HARD LIKE THE PAST YEAR I WAS LIKE FUCK IT YOU GOT A ROOM AT MY HOUSE ME AND GANGSTA DRE ATE SPREADS LIKE 4 DAYS A WEEK THROUGH THIS WHOLE TIME . BUT I KNOW MY SITUATION IS ONE OF A KIND . SO AS FAR AS WHAT MS IS SAYING I FEEL HIM KVE IS A HARD WORKING LABEL THATS HOW I HOOKED UP WITH HIM HE WAS AT EVERY FUNCTION DOIN HIS THING PROMOTING . AS FAR AS HIS ARTIST GETTIN PAID I DONT KNOW BOUT THAT , BUT GETTIN THEM HEARD HE DOES THAT I WOULD'NT PUT MONEY BEHIND SOMEBODY I DONT KNOW SO YEAH RECOUP WOULD BE A PRIORITY OF MINE . THATS WHY ARTIST SIGN CONTRACTS IT MIGHT TAKE 2-3 ALBUMS TO MAKE A PROFIT YA KNOW ........AND WHY DID YOU SIGN IN THE FIRST PLACE CUZ YOU COULDN'T PUT YOUR SELF OUT . AND BY THE WAY FINISHIN THE ALBUM IS THE EASY PART I DONT CARE HOW HOT IT IS . TRY PROMOTING IT AND GETTING IT INTO STORES

I posted something in the Bow Wow forum about something similar to that....

Basically, you hire "intern"/interim rappers, who's job is to promote, give ideas/feedback, maybe do some footwork here and there....and basically, they get paid with studio time instead of money...sort of like an apprentice.

The only problems is, 1) nobody likes to work for free, and 2) most labels aint even worth interning at, when you look at the 'hip-hop economy' out here....

hmmm.. COULD, WOULD, SHOULD. good luck on it. You're placing too much emphasis on the topic which has NOTHING to do with schooling or reason for schooling. For all we know, you can waste 4 years of your life at the local JC and end up as a shift manager at Wendy's. Happens all the time. and yes you yourself are an internet character with your own perception on how things are and how they should be. Wake up and smell the dog shit. The real world is a muthafucka and school doesn't prepare you as much as you think it does.
