Review:
I think Capcom is trying to win hella awards for the 2009 season. SF4 is cool, Bionic Commando and Dark Void are expected to be released this year and now we have RE5. However, is RE5 really deserving of the franchise name? IMHO, no.
With RE4 the series took a new approach and it worked. The controls weren't as clunky as they previously were and ammo wasn't as scarce as it was in previous titles in the series, but there were many instances where it retained the classic RE feel when it came to being cornered/attacked by enemies or when it came to certain things popping out of nowhere. With RE5 things are pretty much changed, and I can't say if it's for the worse or better. I don't know if they wanted to dumb this game down for the casual player, or if they wanted to try something new, but whatever the case may be, it's a hit and miss.
This is an action game. PERIOD. This is not survival horror it's action. In fact, I'd say it's like an interactive movie or something and that's a good thing. However, it is a bad thing if you are going in looking for "resident evil" cause you aren't gonna find it here. They could have changed a couple of things (names, weapons, etc) and called this game ASSHOLE 143 and it would have been an entirely new game seperate from RE. That's how different this is from other games, and I can't stress that enough.
As far as gameplay is concerned, I know a lot of people were turned off by the demo, but many of those people obviously failed to go to the options and change it to the more easier control scheme that was based on RE 4. In addition, people who are used to Gears or any other shooter where you can "run & gun" are going to hate this as you have to stop and shoot. This is a part of the RE series, and it worked well when the series had limited ammo and you had to stop and shoot a horde of zombies, because of the tension it created with fight or flight. However, in this game, RE5 there is no need for that as the purpose of the game is to blow shit up, pop fools, etc.
A problem I have with the game is the co-op mode, but because they were going for a movie like feel, I can see why they did it. It's just I wanted to play more as my character and not have to babysit. Your sidekick does a good job in some areas but fails in others. Please, whatever you do don't give her health items. Keep those on your person, because if you don't, she will use them up with no regards to preserving. Some rpgs allow you to set your computer controlled A.I. to cast spells/healing magic or use items when a user defined number has been set (for example heal when health is below 50%), but this dumb bitch uses it all the time. But, there are sections where you are required to use teamwork to get to certain areas/items, but you'll do better to play on co-op with a human. Also, you can't upgrade your item slots, so it's best to keep the important stuff on your Chris and hand the other stuff off to the chick.
The puzzles in the game, so far, aren't too difficult. They are the typical type of puzzles you'd see for this series, and the map makes backtracking and finding destination points a bit easier. Even though you have a map, it's still going to take time to complete this game, and I've heard campaign can go from like 12 - 20 hours depending on how you play. I think I'll probably be somewhere in between, but we'll see in a couple of days.
Concerning weapons, they are on point. The feel of the shotgun is nice, the pistol I have so far feels cool, and one other weapon I've got my hands on feels good as well. The melee moves are on point, and IMHO, you should shoot to stun and then melee, but then again, ammo isn't a problem so you can go ahead and let the enemies have it. The game also has a couple of other sections that break up the "see zombie/infected shoot" formula, so it's well paced. I can't confirm this, but I've heard if you upgrade a weapon to it's max, you can use it after you beat the game and will have unlimited ammo for that weapon. Also, I do know a patch is coming that allows two people to play MP that is similar to the horde mode on Gears 2. The enemies are also varied, and some of them will give you a run for your money, and the boss fights are pretty decent. However, at times, the enemy a.i. seems kinda weak, and I don't know if this was a programming issue or if they wanted to slow the pace down a bit.
Concerning the sound of the game, it sounds nice on my samsung lcd, and I'm sure it will sound even better if I plugged the xbox up to a pair of my studio monitors. But if you have a sound system other than your tv speakers use it. The music sets the tone for a lot of scenes, and nothing seems out of place, but IMHO, some of the voice acting is hit and miss, and I say that was due to part of the writing, and this brings me to the story. I don't want to spoil anything, but like I said before, this is like an interactive movie, and there are things that will throw you for a loop.
Graphics? You know how the game looks. But there are times were I think an explosion caused the framerate to drop, but I may have been tired and sleepy when that happened, so whatever.
So what do I give it? Right now I'd give it a 9-9.2, but those going in looking for that classic RE feel won't like this. However, if you liked RE4, you'll like this, but keep in mind this is more action orientated. Some are going to ask how it compares to Gears, and I say the two can't be compared because they are on opposite spectrums, but I can compare it to Dead Space, and I'm going to withold that opinion until I beat this.
I'm out.
BTW, it took me 20 minutes to type this one because I kept getting a phone call.
EDIT: Purchase or Rental? For me it was a purchase, and if you like RE4 or want a new action game purchase it. If not, rent it or pass it up.
