lol@people backing standardized testing. If only you knew the shit not only kids but anyone in the education field has to put up with, you would be singing an entirely different tune. I take it none of you morons have any knowledge of the politics behind standardized testing.

imo the reason alot of mexicans are in these fields of work is because of two things . limited english skills and or illegal immigrants. educational institutions wether private or public are ultimately chasing money like we all do. yeah i feel you on people wanting the divide. republicans believe in 2 classes- rich and poor. the seperation is obvious. but ultimately you have to be willing to work hard to get to where you want to be. its harder for us minorities, but we can make anything happen in america. thats not a lie! all these things you guys are speaking on are very truthful but ultimately all these tests, guidelines , etc. are man-made laws and regulations. when made up im sure it was biased to begin with! humans make mistakes. obama can bring change theres no doubt about that imo. we've come so far but have so far to go!
What the fuck is this ramble? LOL

A real question is if not with a standard how should children be evaluated? Maybe with a psychologist asking them how math makes them FEEEEL?

@ Mr. Ric I'm willing to bet the same kids that did well on the Billy and Christina question do well on the Pedro and Shaniqua one as well

Maybe, but that's not so much the issue. What is important is the kids that do bad on the Billy Christina - how do they do on the Pedro Shaniqua. That and the whole test is Billy Christina, not Billy Christina Pedro and Shaniqua.

It's not a matter of alternate means of evaluation. It's the stipulations attached if a child DOESN'T meet a certain bench mark. And if you are not aware of those stipulations, you may wanna look them up before you continue to argue with people who know the system a little better than you do.

im not complaining in reality. you want to talk about rambling. last time i checked theres plenty of resources for minorities once you finish highschool. i refuse to engage in ignorrance any longer. carry on ceasar chavez!
There are some resources, but why don't you compare the predominantly white/rich area of a city with a predominately colored/impoverished area of a city in terms of schools, funding, resources available, job opportunities available, etc., This is where the discrepancy is, when two schools are both publicly funded by the government yet are on opposite ends of the scale in regards to resources available.

For instance how is it that with a very large percentage of beat down broke chinese immigrants do amazing on standardized tests (especially the grammatical english section)? Its because they try harder and study their asses off, pay attention in school ect.............

Oh and please nobody start with that whole the questions are culturally biased shit.
There is no history of US intervention in China where displacement of jobs, resources and people take place. The difference between Chinese immigrants and immigrants of places where the US didn't intervene (Colonize) and those of Latin America is that the ones from Latin America face the economic, political and self-esteem issues created from being colonized. If the US had a similar history with China that it did with Mexico, then you could compare the way immigrants do on standardized testing in school and it may be valid. But you can't view all immigrants the same way.

There are those immigrants that come here as a direct result of US economic and political intervention in their native countries, and there are those who come here due to other reasons. (Chinese, Middle East, etc.,) You cannot view immigrants from China the same as immigrants from Mexico or any other Latin American country, the history is not the same and the context is not the same.

no doubt resources belong in lower income communities.

There are some resources, but why don't you compare the predominantly white/rich area of a city with a predominately colored/impoverished area of a city in terms of schools, funding, resources available, job opportunities available, etc., This is where the discrepancy is, when two schools are both publicly funded by the government yet are on opposite ends of the scale in regards to resources available.
i dont disagree with that. its unfortunate but you can still overcome. my college success class sheds light on people beliefs that therefore effect direction and goals. ultimately its an individuals decision. the road is longer for us minorities in the low income bracket but theres no excuse to why an individual can't overcome these obstacles. i agree with you on this point. school districts in oakland dont recieve the same funding as say a school in concord or even another area of oakland. its not right thats for sure. but like i said before in another thread, theres 50 ways to travel to the bay area, and in the end whether you take 580/680/880/24 you will still end up in the same place. its harder but not unachievable is my whole point. hopefully these are the things obama can bring light to as well as many other failures in our systems.

i see people still have selective reading skills and dont want to address this
show me the stats that show "beat down broke chinese immigrants" do "amazing" on the so-called "grammatical english section" (aint even a test called "grammatical english" in any standardized test I've ever seen) and then I will address it.

Come on now. You really think the only alternative to standardized tests is some psycho-emotional survey?
I can think of at least a dozen formal and informal assessments I use with kids on a near-daily basis that are more meaningful than standardized tests.

Standardized tests do NOT test how smart a kid is or how much they have learned. They only test HOW WELL a kid can take a test.

by the way I'm glad this thread got turned into a discussion on testing and education instead of some bullshit conjecture about who's gonna be the next president.
