Rumors persist about Asomugha to Eagles in trade for McNabb
By Steve Corkran
Friday, March 26th, 2010 at 4:03 pm in Oakland Raiders.

An ESPN report Friday said that the Raiders are “open” to including cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha as part of the compensation in a trade for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

The Raiders, for their part, said there’s nothing to the report, which came on the heels of a ProFootballTalk.com post Thursday that floated the idea. The two Raiders employees also maintained that they are unaware of the Raiders even contacting the Eagles about McNabb.

A Yahoo! Sports report said that Asomugha’s representatives shot down the notion that Asomugha would be part of a deal for McNabb. Then again, the Raiders could make a trade that includes Asomugha without his knowledge because he doesn’t have a no-trade clause.

McNabb’s agent, Fletcher Smith, told the Philadelphia Daily News on Friday that the Eagles and McNabb haven’t discussed a trade. Again, they don’t have to do so.

What’s it all mean? Not much until someone other than Smith puts his name to one of the myriad quotes attributed to unnamed sources. Until then, it’s all just part of the typical offseason banter native to the slow part of the NFL offseason.

That doesn’t mean McNabb won’t be traded, and it doesn’t mean that he won’t wind up with the Raiders at some point. The Raiders are far from set at quarterback with JaMarcus Russell, Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski.

McNabb would provide an instant upgrade for the Raiders and take pressure off Russell from performing at a level much higher than he did last season or in 2009 when he was the unquestioned starter.

The Raiders have plenty of ammo to pull off a trade for McNabb, especially if the asking price is a second- or third-round draft pick. But trading Asomugha just doesn’t make much sense from the Raiders standpoint, given they are more than a 33-year-old, worn-down quarterback away from being a legitimate playoff contender. They would need both McNabb and Asomugha, as well as a few more proven veterans.

with our o-line Mcnabb would be hurt by the second game.........

I still cannot wrap my head around why you guys seem to think it's such a HUGE deal to give up Aso

even if McNabb is only good for 2 years (he's probably good for a little more than that) Aso is only good for 2 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the argument is... McNabb is old and after 3-4 years he's gonna be done... after 2 years Nnamdi is gonna be signing with another team... I guaran-fucking-tee it

look.. like other dude was saying... if we could get McNabb for a 2nd and a 4th... I'm all for it... but I dunno if we can

and just because we get McNabb doesn't mean we can't also address the O-line

I dunno... I'm just fuckin drunk and getting irritated because everyone's opinion is the opposite of mine

Aso is the fuckin man.... but a good QB makes much more of a difference than a good CB. I know we're not gonna win a fuckin Super Bowl with McNabb.... but shit, let's hit .500 at least... feel me? don't be picky Raiders fans... this team has sucked for many years... many years when Nnamdi has been around... so he isn't gonna magically make us great this season... maybe McNabb will... who fuckin knows?

like I said before... what do we have to lose??? Nnamdi is on his way out the door after seasons anyways... and lord knows I do NOT want J. Russ going into next season as the starting QB... is McNabb is on the roster he's gonna be guaranteed the starting job

fuck it... we'll just see what happens... I don't give a shit anymore... who am I kidding? Raiders aint winning shit next season anyways

McNabb only has 1 year left on his current contract so there's no guarantee past this season that he'll be a Raider so we would have given up our best player to rent Donovan McNabb for 1 season....
oh... well... I didn't know THAT, lol

that changes a lot... probably the best point that goes against my argument

yeah Mcnabb would skip town real quick after next year............he'd go to a contender, it just doesnt make sense to give Aso up.........if we trade Aso make sure we get a young player who would be around for a few years or get a couple draft picks........

i agree tebow would be an even worse pick imo than russell. at least with russell i had hopes that he could possibly be a decent qb with tebow i have the feeling that his college career will not carry over well to the nfl at all

vick is the only qb we should be going after, since he is the only one that can work with our shitty o-line. gradkowski had success because of his mobility, but his arm isn't strong enough to keep al happy.
