Don't blink -- Niners hire Solari to coach O-line
Well, that didn't take long. Mere hours after news broke that the Redskins had hired 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster to coach their offensive line, Mike Singletary interviewed and hired Mike Solari to replace Foerster. Solari, 55, should be a familiar name to long-time 49ers followers. He is a Daly City native who coached under legendary 49ers offensive coach Bobb McKittrick in San Francisco from 1992-96.
Singletary said Solari has been his No. 1 choice to run the offensive line ever since Singletary began interviewing for head-coaching jobs. Still, he said that his first inclination was to retain Foerster. In fact, Singletary said today that he initially denied the Redskins' request to interview Foerster. Forester's family, however, is still in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area from the time that Foerster coached with the Ravens. When Foerster asked for the chance to return to the east coast, Singletary said he couldn't deny it. "For me, family is important," Singletary said. "I could not not do that -- give him a chance to be closer to his family." Singletary said he's denied other requests from teams to interview other assistants.
Solari spent the last two seasons in Seattle, and was not retained when Pete Carroll took over the team. Seattle's offensive line struggled last season. The Seahawks gave up 41 sacks, one more than the 49ers. They finished 26th in rushing offense, one slot behind the 49ers. Still, Solari enjoys a strong reputation around the league. He spent nine seasons as Kansas City's offensive line coach, three of them when Jimmy Raye was the Chiefs offensive coordinator. He spent another two seasons as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator. During his tenure in Kansas City, the Chiefs finished in the top 10 in rushing seven times. Singletary singled out those Chiefs offensive lines when explaining why Solari is a good fit with the 49ers.
Solari is the second coach hired this week who has close ties to Raye. Singletary on Monday hired Kurt Schottenheimer, another long-time Chiefs coach, to run the special teams. Schottenheimer and Raye coached together in Washington in 2001.
