The career of Manny Pacquiao is coming to a close in the near future, according to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum. The Filipino boxer, who doubles as a congressman of the Sarangani province in the Philippines, will take his political career a step further in 2013 when he runs for governor. Pacquiao is already an early favorite to win that election. Between then and now, Pacquiao will likely take part in three to four more fights. One of those fights is scheduled for Saturday night, when he defends the WBO welterweight title against Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"Let me give you the political situation. He's now a congressman from Sarangani. His term is up in 2013, when he will for governor of Sarangani province and he will probably win. That's the end of boxing because as a congressman, like our congressmen, you don't work very hard. As a governor it's very different. You have to run a whole province and you're resonsible for the water, the electricity, everything. That's what he's going to concentrate on. He's going to run in 2016 for the senate, which is a six year term. And in 2022, when he's over 40-years of age, that's the first time that he'll be eligible to run for president. He won't have time to spare, coming over to the Wild Card, doing press conferences," Arum said.
As far as the opponnents for 2012. The obvious target, and the biggest fight in boxing, would come against Floyd Mayweather Jr. If Mayweather is not available, for whatever reason, there are other options in mind.
"Assuming Mayweather is not available. You have [Timothy] Bradley. You have Mike Jones as a possibility as a welterweight. You have [Andre] Berto, if he does something good. The guy who's the real sleeper, that could be a huge fight, if he continues [to win] because he's such a crowd pleaser - is the lightweight Brandon Rios. And there may be others.....[Yuriorkis] Gamboa," Arum said.
Another lucrative option, which Arum believes would be a big fight, would come against junior welterweight Amir Khan, who plans to become a full fledged welterweight in 2012. There are obvious hurdles in making that fight. Both Pacquiao and Khan are trained by Freddie Roach. The veteran trainer has a close relationship with both men. Khan and Pacquiao are also friends who often train side by side for their upcoming fights, but Arum doesn't feel the friendship is close enough to prevent a future meeting.
"That's another name that could be added, because obviously with Khan's body of work - it would be a very attractive fight. I really have to say, being around both of them, that while they seem to like each other - there is no real great friendship there. I'm not saying there is any animosity, but it's not like they hang out together or anything like that. So I think that fight could be a possibility, sure," Arum said.
Is old Bob looking for a way out of the Mayweather fight? So Manny is going to fight a Lightweight or Featherweight next?
