I use Peer Guardian..it's ok

My problem is that I landed on the bittorrent of death last night. Massive pop ups everyewhere, trying to change my homepage..etc when I boot up. It was a invisible icon next to the clock, but when you put the mouse over it it said "mirc". I got into safe mode and deleted Mirc program even though I never used it.

Is it possible to remove IE 7 and reinstall it? Or should I go with the restore/recovery deal and start from scratch?

Getting this when I reboot or boot up

Window cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogin.exe' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again. To search for a file, click the START button, and then click SEARCH

After I click the OK button that

This comes

Could not find or run 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogin.exe' Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registery

Looks good! No problem. Just so you know...this is only browser related stuff. Not Virus related.

EDIT: Im assuming you need all those "Extra Menu" buttons...if not...you can get rid of them. You may or may not notice your browser start time increase a little.

Go into safe mode (without networking). F8 at boot up. When it's up...go to: Start>Search or F3 (same thing)
Select the option for all files and folders. Also select "search hidden folders and system files" Then chose "When was it modified" then choose "Specific Dates" in the drop down menu...select "Date Created" and choose yesterdays date or the date you got the virus. This will search for any malicious files that were created...and you can delete them. Also try running your anti-virus in Safe Mode. But make sure you have the latest virus definitions. if you can't get to the net for that...you'll have to reboot in "Safe Mode with networking" and update your anti virus stuff...in case it's a new virus.

^^This will also show ANY files you downloaded or files from programs you installed on the same day. Also windows update stuff if that was turned on...so be careful and look at the time created by right clicking on the file... or right click within the search results and select "arrange icons by" Modified. that will narrow down the timeline for you.

HELP!!!

My idiot girl downloaded GIMP last night, and it restarted the comp, but now it is stuck in Safe Mode. I've done everything I can think of, from holding down ctrl and starting it under normal, logged, even the step by step... nothing. It keeps ending up in safe mode.

What do I do?

function loadTOCNode(){}Article ID:306615Last Review:January 31, 2007Revision:1.2
This article was previously published under Q306615
SYMPTOMS

loadTOCNode(1, 'symptoms');When you start your computer, it may always start in Safe mode. This may be the case even when you select Normal on the Startup menu, or when you click Normal startup on the General tab of the System Configuration utility.

CAUSE

loadTOCNode(1, 'cause');This behavior can occur if the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file contains the following line: BootSafe=1
This setting forces your computer to start in Safe mode.

RESOLUTION

loadTOCNode(1, 'resolution');To resolve this issue, edit the Msdos.sys file by doing one of the following: •Remove the BootSafe=1 line from the Msdos.sys file.

-or- •Change the BootSafe=1 line to BootSafe=0.To do this, follow these steps: 1.Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.2.In the Named box, type msdos.sys.3.In the Look In box, click the drive on which Windows is installed (usually drive C), and then click Find Now.4.Right-click the Msdos.sys file, and then click Properties.5.Click to clear the Read-Only and Hidden check boxes to remove these attributes from the Msdos.sys file, and then click OK.6.Right-click the Msdos.sys file, and then click Open With.7.In the Choose the program you want to use box, click WordPad, and then click OK.8.Do one of the following: •Delete the BootSafe=1 line.

-or- •Change the value in the BootSafe=1 line to BootSafe=0.9.On the File menu, click Save.10.Right-click the Msdos.sys file, and then click Properties.11.Click to select the Read-Only and Hidden check boxes to set the attributes for the file, and then click OK. 12.Restart your computer.

I would use this option instead of deleting the line:

-or- •Change the value in the BootSafe=1 line to BootSafe=0.9.On the File menu, click Save.10.Right-click the Msdos.sys file, and then click Properties.11.Click to select the Read-Only and Hidden check boxes to set the attributes for the file, and then click OK. 12.Restart your computer.

.......i just removed registry mechanic and got ANTIVI PERSONAL EDITION CLASSIC...just thought this would be much better and have my laptop run more smoother
AntiVir is a good ANTIVIRUS program. it doesn't help much when it comes to certain programs making changes to the registry or prevent new registry entries from occuring. Registry mechanic will also pick up legit registry changes from certain software and mark it as a problem. If you applied any cracks or uninstalled software that makes changes in the registry it will flag it , or in the case of uninstalled software...the registry entry is left behind and that is marked as a problem. Your best bet is to lock it down to prevent changes without your approval. The registry is a tricky place. Outpost firewall PRO will prevent unauthorized .dll or .exe files from making changes. I would go with that.
