LOL @ wrong. The thread is about the video and the controversy over the images in the video. I am defending the artistic integrity of the visuals.
Personally, I don't see how robbing a pizza guy who makes $6.50 an hour is starting a revolution. I don't see how car-jacking a middle-income family is going to further those who are struggling. Those actions alone are not going to do anything but land more black people in jail. I really like the dpz and feel their message, no matter what, should be heard and is necessary in hip hop, but I also see a certain martyr aspect in their lyrics now that wasn't there before. I'm out starting a revolution by robbing the pizza guy and I go to jail for armed robbery--poor me--I was only trying to save black people from oppression! To me, that's just wack. Fighting the power is just that...fighting those who actually have the influence to change society from the inside out. Nah just playin. The 'wrong' thing was sarcasm. I don't see this video as having a negative effect precisely for most of the same reasons.

I just figured that over time they would get more precise in their message and organization of "The People's Army". Robbing the pizza man and carjacking a family with a few homeboys isn't turning the tide of revolution in my belly. It is one song and one video, but the message is still there. I understand the circumstances and the point of what they are saying, but people who aren't that deep won't get anything out of it.
If they didn't want the dream part in the video, I highly doubt it would be in there. They are on the indie tip. There is no major label telling them to be PC. The director may have come up with the concept at the end, but they would have never endorsed it if it wasn't a message they wanted to portray.
The definition of this word found at dictionary.com sums everything up *PERFECTLY*.

Okay we're seeing eye to eye on the dream then (I kind of thought that was the case). I believe that you could be right on their interpretation of African American disparity, but I don't think how he portrayed the situation was reasonable. It doesn't matter how deep or serious your message is, it is all in how the message is interpreted by those who it reaches. If people watch this video, and do not understand what they (Dead Prez) are trying to say (which is highly likely), then how necessary is their attempt to deliver it? What I'm trying to say is, their message is only as good as society's ability to interpret it. Do you think the average teen who watches this video is going to think to himself "damn, so thats how bad things can get", or is he going to think "damn that white dude got knocked the fuck out". I think the question has already been answered in this thread.

Very intelligent thinking Hustle. You know my main beef with this video is how they represented the "system" that are fighting against. I think we can both agree that if the same situation took place but with 5 businessmen wearing suits and carrying briefcases, rolling in a Mercedes down the wrong street, and then getting jacked by the very people who suffer the indignity of their success, it would be a little more entertaining and symbolic. It would still be violent and empty of any moral message, but at least a younger generation could identify what Dead Prez is trying to say (see my above comments to you). This video is "cool", but if you want to talk about the integrity of it, and what it signifies, it is a step backwards in trying to gain equal ground with your opressor. Then again, maybe their entire message is simply... "FUCK IT".

I agree with you, the common American teen has not been raised to look at the symbolic inferences this video deals with and be able to see it as anything other than some black guys beating up some white people. The majority of people don't even listen to lyrics anymore. If there is a catchy hook, they'll sing along, but that's it. All that will be seen from the video is the actions of those in it. Granted this video is not and never will be in power rotation on any of the media outlets, if it was, I don't think the real message would be understood. The minds on this board that can see it as a political piece and an introspective view on life for African Americans are the minority. The rest of the people will beat up their pizza man because they saw it in the video.
