Both Schaefer and promoter Lou DiBella have
confirmed that discussions are ongoing to
finalize a high-stakes junior welterweight clash
between Olusegun Ajose and Lucas Matthysse -
with the WBC's interim-title likely at stake. The
fight would take place as the Showtime televised
co-feature to Devon Alexander vs. Randall Bailey
on September 8.
If Matthysse (31-2, 29KOs) prevails, Schaefer
would explore the possibility of a mouth-
watering fight with Garcia.
"That's a possibility. Can you imagine if
Matthysse [fought Garcia]...I don't really know
Ajose, so I'm not trying to disrespect him, but I
don't really know Ajose. But I saw Matthysse,
what he did to [Humberto] Soto. Matthysse, at
140...[Garcia] and Matthysee, can you imagine
that? A pick'em fight," Schaefer said.
Garcia's convincing victory at the Mandalay Bay
was surprising to many, including some of the
executives at Golden Boy. But they don't expect
anyone to underestimate Garcia in the future.
"Obviously we know that he's a tough guy. I
think he surprised everybody. He's the kind of
guy, when he fought Kendall Holt and Erik
Morales, he stepped up to the plate. I think it's
going to be difficult for anyone to beat Danny
Garcia. We saw that he could take a punch. He
doesn't take a step back. And when he hits - it's
lights out," Schaefer said.
