JOSEPH AGBEKO: "I'LL BE BACK BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR...I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE"
By David Kassel | August 20, 2012
"I'm in training very hard to come back, so definitely I'll be back before the end of the year, and definitely before the end of November...I'm looking forward to the future back in the ring. I'm looking to get back in the ring with Mares again, (Guillermo) Rigondeaux, (Nonito) Donaire, Anselmo Moreno, and every one of those top guys. Once I get back in the ring, I'm definitely looking to get in the ring with one of them," stated former bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko, who talked about his current promotional situation, his future plans, and much more. Check it out!
DK: Joseph, what's going on?
JA: Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. I'm in training in the gym right now.
DK: I appreciate the time to speak with you. You're in training right now. What has been going on?
JA: Um, I've been inactive for some time now due to some legal issues with Don King. I've been with Don King and I'm not getting the proper pay or the right kind of fights. I'm trying to get free from my contract so I can be active.
DK: Your last fight was back in December against Abner Mares. You haven't been in the ring since then. Can you tell us a bit about what is going on?
JA: Don King has breached the contract, so technically, I am automatically freed from the contract. Because we have a pending lawsuit, we have to go to court to settle that and I'm arguing so I can get back in the ring.
DK: I heard a rumor that you made less than $10,000 for your fight with Mares when all was said and done. Can you confirm or deny that?
JA: Um, my lawyers have told me not to talk about anything regarding my suit. I'm not allowed to say anything about that for now, so I cannot speak anything about that.
DK: There was a statement you made a couple months ago that you were a free agent. Was that a true statement or was it something you were trying to put out in the public?
JA: We're going to court. I'm automatically free from him because he has breached the contract in so many ways, but I have to go to court to make it public and so I can go work with other promoters.
DK: So what is your promotional contract status right now?
JA: Yeah, I'm not allowed to talk about that one right now, so that's all I can say.
DK: I understand. How soon are you looking to get back into the ring?
JA: I'm in training very hard to come back, so definitely I'll be back before the end of the year, and definitely before the end of November.
DK: Have you spoken with any other promotional companies recently about potentially signing with them? Can you say who they are if you have spoken with anyone?
JA: I have a few promoters who feel that I'm one of the best and these are the top promoters. I'm not allowed to mention the companies' names for now, but after everything is solved, I'm going to sign with one of them.
DK: Joseph, I appreciate you taking the time to speak with us? Do you have anything else you would like to say?
JA: Um, yeah. I'm looking forward to the future back in the ring. I'm looking to get back in the ring with Mares again, (Guillermo) Rigondeaux, (Nonito) Donaire, Anselmo Moreno, and every one of those top guys. Once I get back in the ring, I'm definitely looking to get in the ring with one of them. Please follow me on Twitter
