Timothy Bradley chooses sure fight over chance at Floyd Mayweather

Written by

The Desert Sun

In the end, the security of a sure thing overruled the hope of a dream opportunity for Cathedral City boxer Timothy Bradley.

The WBO champion decided to extend his agreement with Top Rank to beyond 2015, meaning he likely will never get a chance to fight his idol Floyd Mayweather.

Bradley agreed to his extension while working out a deal for his rematch with Manny Pacquiao on April 12.

However, Mayweather announced he would retire at the end of 2015. While Bradley didn’t release details of his new deal, he said it goes beyond 2015. And because Mayweather is on a rival network, Showtime, a fight is unlikely to happen while Bradley is with Top Rank, whose fights air on HBO.

“I don’t know how that got blown out of proportion,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “We were talking about our partnership extending beyond the Pacquiao fight and we were able to come to an agreement that extended beyond that for our relationship, so we were happy with that. He’s satisfied and our partnership will go on in the future.”

Mayweather is the No. 1 fighter on nearly every pound-for-pound rankings, which accounts for all fighters regardless of weight class. Most rankings have Bradley at No. 3 behind Mayweather and Andre Ward.

However, there’s no guarantee Mayweather would want to fight Bradley. And Bradley has had a lucrative relationship with Top Rank.

“Remember, Floyd Mayweather can do whatever he wants. He doesn’t have to fight me,” Bradley said. “Fans asked him to fight Manny Pacquiao, he’s not fighting Manny Pacquiao, you know what I’m saying? There’s no guarantee. What I have to look after is myself. I can’t chase a guy. I can’t chase Floyd Mayweather, and chase this guy, chase this guy. I need to secure my future, secure my legacy, and secure what Tim Bradley wants and what will benefit him and his family.”

Top Rank and Golden Boy, which works with Mayweather’s The Money Team promotional company, have not made deals to pit their fighters against each other for years. Bradley sees no end to that.

If Bradley waits until his deal with Top Rank ended after this year, he could have talked to the Mayweather camp to secure a fight.

Bradley has said he welcomes the fight. But when push came to shove, Bradley said financial security for his family was worth more than possibly fighting Mayweather, which could have been an iffy proposition.

“I had to look at what would benefit me,” Bradley said. “At the end of the day, as a man I made my decision, and I have to live with it. And I’m happy with the terms. I’m happy with everything Top Rank. What I asked for, I got. It’s a lucrative deal. I’m happy with the deal. It’s great. I think it’s great for me and my family.

“I’m more than positive that I wouldn’t get this kind of deal anywhere else.”

Negotiating the deal with Bradley and his wife Monica. Bradley said his long-time manager Cameron Dunkin, who brought Bradley to Top Rank, are no longer working together.

Their contract expired at the end of last year, and Bradley said he only had spoken to Dunkin once after his last fight, a victory over Juan Manuel Marquez in October.

“He showed no interest in talking to me about extending for more or anything like that,” Bradley said. “Cameron is a great manager, a great manager. I can’t say anything bad about him. He helped me in many ways and we helped each other.

“If guys are looking to make money, Cameron is the man — Is the man.”

But Bradley said he’s comfortable with Monica negotiating deals and he’s happy with his extension with Top Rank and his deal to fight Pacquiao again on April 12.

“I decided, I know this game, my wife knows this game,” Bradley said. “I can control my own destiny. I have a relationship with Top Rank, a relationship with HBO. We know the game.

“We know what we want and that’s the bottom line. We know what we want. … And we got what we wanted.”

Gamboa said he was there to let the public know that his side wanted the fight and there is no excuses and they want to make the fight. Garcia more or less said the same thing but from what I caught, sounded like he was hinting that Gamboa had excuses of why it wouldn't get made, but overall, both sides want it and want to get the contracts done to make the fight happen.

Interesting to note that while Bradley signed an extension with Top Rank, Pacquiao did not. From Michael Koncz:

Pacquiao will reportedly receive $20 million while Bradley settled for $6 million with Pacquiao accepting less than in their first fight.

Koncz confirmed that “there were discussions about an extension of Pacquiao’s contract” which lapses at the end of this year but insisted “we did not sign an extension.”

Mikey nor Robert said they were scared, they said that no one should be talking about one fighter being afraid over another,(50 Cent talking shit about Mikey). Other than that, both promoters need to sit down and talk about making this fight happen as they both agreed that HBO wants to pick it up. Box Azteca not only shows fights for free, but they always get exclusives like this. Plus they show a shit load of other fights

Report: Floyd Mayweather bets $10M on Denver Broncos to win the Super Bowl

By Evan Bleier

If the reports that are coming from Twitter are true, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is certainly living up to his "Money” nickname.
In addition to being known for his undefeated record in boxing, Mayweather is a notorious gambler and has reportedly already bet $10 million on the Denver Broncos to win the Super Bowl.

Earlier this year, the champ won more than $50,000 when No. 11 Oklahoma knocked off No. 3 Alabama 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl.
He also won a good chunk of cash when Michigan State beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl, although he may never have even stepped in a casino to place the wager.

It’s unclear if he used a “runner” to place the alleged Super Bowl bets, but if he did, it probably wasn’t this guy:

Exclusive: Barry Hunter on Peterson victory and future Danny Garcia bout

By Kevin Davis

Karceno: Congratulations coach on the victory Jean was a very tough kid. I saw you even gave Lamont a love slap to get him back into the fight.

Hunter: "Yeah I wanted to wake him up, keep him focused, you remember the last fight one shot changed the fight. I'm not going to send my fighter out there unless he's paying attention to instructions on what we need to get accomplished. You say I will wait until the next round it may be too late."

Karceno: I see Lamont won every round since then

Hunter "Well there you go, right there."

Karceno: So people are saying Danny Garcia is next, what are you're thoughts on that?

Hunter: "That's a great match up champion vs champion, that's what this sport needs, early on I recruited Danny back when i was with Shelley Finkel, yeah a lot of people don't know that, but there is a lot of love for Danny Garcia, but him and Lamont both want to be the undisputed champion and these are the type of fights boxing need man, so let the best man win. Boxing is close to bringing back them ole, Hagler, Hearns and Leonard days. We getting there."

Karceno: What do you think we need to do to get there?

Hunter: "They should do it like the other sports and have one title for each division and let everybody fight everybody and the best will get that belt. It would solve a lot of confusion. There are just too many belts right now in the sport, it's confusing for the casual fans."

Karceno: Where would that put Floyd Mayweather?

Hunter: "He's the champion of the division,of the sport, this isn't about him, he's on his way out the sport, I'm talking about changing the way it go from here on out, because one fight doesn't defined you're whole career, and we need to change that because now it's too many fighters worrying about protecting that zero instead of laying it all on the line. there are a lot of attractive fights out there to be made, if we can just get the fans to forget about the wins and the loses, we can make have some exciting fights taking place."

Why can't boxers just accept defeat anymore?

By Kevin Davis

You have heard it, we all have heard it, 'I give him full credit for the win, no excuses BUT...' it's like a program, some will even go on for months before they find or create a reason for them to have come up short that night. Lamont Peterson, now is saying that he felt weak after giving two valves of blood, the night he fought Lucas Matthysse, but he gives him full credit. What's even more exhausting is that more excuses are coming from fighters that have been knocked out in fights. Chad Dawson swears he could have continued the fight against Adonis Stevenson, when it was clear he was out on his feet.

I believe that it's a lie each fighter tells themselves and convince themselves they were not hurt and they are invincible. To admit that is like a form of weakness and they can't have weakness enter their minds when they are training in a brutal sport like boxing. It would just be such a breathe of fresh air to hear a fighter just say, 'I gave it my best and he beat me fair and square, I'll be back.' We do hear that now, then they come back months later with a complete brainwashed mentally. Maybe it's promoters in their ear, but they need to get out of it, because it doesn't make it sound any better, because to the masses it's all whining.

Jesus Christ smh.

Tamayo has been KOed by Guadalupe Arce (4-46).

That was Arce's only career KO in 50 fights!

Mystery man performs craziest speed bag routine ever

I've seen dudes do stuff like this at the gym and 100 times out of 100, they can't fight lol That's why a lot of boxing dudes feel like it's the most pointless exercise in the gym. I don't even know if it makes you faster at all. Most guys believe in using the double-end bag more than the speed bag.

ESPN and WBC Has War of Words - Twitter Insults and Beefs

By Shawn Craddick

Well I didn't see this one coming. I've seen fighters get into twitter beefs and insults but I never thought I would see a TV Network get into it with a Belt Organization. Earlier today Dan Rafael from ESPN was upset at the ever so often WBC Rankings when they put Julio Chavez Jr Number 1 at 168lbs. The WBC fired back at Dan calling him a cellphone man and didn't have it in him to say it to their face. Lo and behold Dan the MAN stepped up and said he Would Tell them directly to their face. I wonder if they would invite Dan to REALLY come do it.…

Victor Ortiz: I have no ring rust whatsoever

January 27th, 2014

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (January 27) – Fighters for the Victor Ortiz vs. Luis Collazo card gathered at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, N.Y. to workout for the media and hold a press conference before their respective Thursday, Jan. 30 fights at Barclays Center airing live on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes.

VICTOR ORTIZ, Former WBC Welterweight World Champion

“We’re so ready, we’ve had the best sparring partners and we’re ready to get in the ring. Training camp was really good.

[On experiencing "ring rust"] “Absolutely not, I’m completely 100 percent confident. I have no ring rust whatsoever.

“I’m not at all concerned about my jaw, I feel great and I can’t wait to get in the ring.

“This is my first time fighting in Brooklyn and I’m excited. I don’t have any words to say, nothing bad, nothing good. I’m here for the victory.”

LUIS COLLAZO, Former WBA Welterweight World Champion

“I’m really excited and humbled by the opportunity. I just want to give the boxing fans a great fight and a great outing. I’ve been waiting a long time for a fight of this caliber.

[On Ortiz's strategy] “He can do what he wants, but I know on fight night I will be ready. If he wants to dance, I’ll be the bull.

“This fight is for my future. I’m trying not to look past it, but this victory here means everything to me. It means I have a future. If not, I have to start all over again from scratch.

“Preparation has been great. I’ve got a great team. We’re just getting stronger and feeling great.

“I’ve been counting down for weeks waiting patiently for this. I was motivated before getting this fight, but this has escalated my motivation.

[On supporting the Nephcure Foundation] “As a fighter, we fight to give the fans entertainment. To be a champion fighting for your life, you have to be champion in your heart.”

EDDIE GOMEZ, Undefeated Super Welterweight Prospect

“We’ve had six or seven hard weeks of training camp, doing everything we have to do to prepare for the fight.

“We [Gomez and Arnett] fought in the amateurs. I beat him and knocked him down three times. So now we’re going back at it again. He’s improved a lot but somebody’s ’0′ has to go.

“We’ve grown and developed a lot both power-wise and ability-wise.

[On fighting at Barclays Center] “It’s a short drive from my house. I love fighting there. I have a lot of people coming to see me.

[On what to expect Thursday] “You can expect fireworks. I have everything, speed, power and whatever it takes to get the ‘W,’ I’ll be doing it.”

DAQUAN ARNETT, Undefeated Super Welterweight Prospect

“This fight is a great opportunity and a great stage to be on during Super Bowl week.

“I feel like I’m an all-around fighter. I can box, I can punch, I can sit in the pocket and fight inside and outside. The main thing is I can adjust and adapt to anything.

“I think these are some great, fan-friendly fights. I like to give the fans what they want to see.

[On fighting Gomez as amateurs] “It keeps coming up, but all I can say is we’re men now. We keep growing up and we’ll see what happens on Thursday. We were kids then, running around the ring throwing punches.

“I expect a good entertaining fight, something the fans will love to see. This will get both of us back on TV again. It will definitely be a win on my end.

“We are going to have a great show Thursday night so everyone get your tickets.”

GARY RUSSELL JR., Undefeated Super Featherweight Prospect

“I had a fun training camp. A lot of people approach this as a job, I understand that but for me, training camp was fun because I’m fighting a southpaw and I’m a southpaw.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I’m the oldest of six boys and all of us our southpaws.

“We’re animals, soldiers and warriors and I’m looking forward to bouncing around six, seven, eight rounds.”

MARCUS BROWNE, 2012 U.S. Olympian & Light Heavyweight Rising Star

“This is my sixth time fighting at Barclays Center and I’m ready to go out and take another step forward in my pro career.

“I just have to do what I have to do and keep carrying on with my career.”

ZACHARY OCHOA, Undefeated Super Lightweight Rising Star & Newly Signed GBP Fighter

“Fighting at Barclays Center is a good experience for me because it’s the best arena in the world. It’s a great thing that’s convenient for people and people from Brooklyn love to fight.

“Signing with Golden Boy was a beautiful thing for me. I couldn’t really get fights. For someone with my work ethic who trains all year it was disappointing not to get fights. But Golden Boy saw something in me and I’m excited they decided to sign me.

“Teachers in school used to say I wasn’t going to graduate, but I graduated high school, got accepted to college and I chose a different path.

“I am blessed with talent and I am so hungry to be the best, that’s why I call myself Zungry.”

EMMANUEL GONZALEZ, Undefeated Featherweight Prospect

“We have a great main event, great co-main event and I just hope everyone up here is ready. I know I’m ready and I hope everyone comes out and supports a great show.”

PAULIE MALIGNAGGI, Former Two-Division World Champion & FOX Sports 1 Color Commentator

“This is such a stacked card for it being in the middle of Super Bowl week here in New York. The whole city is buzzing.

“I am excited looking at this whole line up, it’s really a great card we have here.

“Everything in New York City is electric. It is a perfect time for a card like this. Tickets start at 25 dollars, which you just can’t beat.

Brett Yormark, CEO of Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets

“Our venue has become a place where the local fighting community aspires to become future champions.

“I am looking forward to seeing one of Brooklyn’s stars, Luis Collazo, in action.

“We really want Brooklyn to be a destination for fans that are coming to the New York metropolitan area as part of their plans before the big game on Sunday night.”
