Adonis Stevenson wants Hopkins, not Tavoris Cloud
June 26th, 2013 | Post Comment l Boxing Forum

tavoris cloud bernard hopkins adonis stevenson By Allan Fox: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) met with HBO recently to discuss his next fight, which the network will likely be televising depending on the opponent picked out. According to Dan Rafael, former IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (24-1, 19 KO’s) was mentioned as a possible opponent for Stevenson’s first defense.

However, the 35-year-old Stevenson still prefers to face IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins rather than fighting Cloud. That doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

Hopkins could end up defending his IBF title against Karo Murat, who the International Boxing Federation recently reinstated as Hopkins’ mandatory challenger after briefly removing Murat from that position when he was experiencing visa problems.

Stevenson may have to take the fight with Cloud if that’s something that HBO wants and there’s no option of getting fights against Andre Ward and Hopkins. When you take those fighters out of the equation, there’s really not a lot of appealing options for Stevenson to fight at 175.

He’s probably not going to get a fight against WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly nor WBA champ Beibut Shumenov. Once you get past those names then it comes down to Stevenson facing his mandatory challenger Tony Bellew or Jean Pascal.

Bellew isn’t well known in Canada or the United States, so there’s point in taking that fight until Stevenson absolutely has to in order to keep the WBC title. Pascal is a huge fight for Stevenson and that’s one that his promoter needs to be working on trying to put together because it’s a much better fight than Stevenson vs. Cloud or Bellew.

It might not be as big as Stevenson vs. Hopkis but it is probably really close to being tht big of a fight.

Stevenson stopped Chad Dawson in the 1st round earlier this month on June 8th in Montreal, Canada.

Broner vs. Malignaggi brings in 1.3 million viewers on Showtime
June 25th, 2013 | Post Comment l Boxing Forum

Broner Malignaggi Broner vs. Malignaggi paulie malignaggi adrien broner By Eric Thomas: Last Saturday night’s fight between unbeaten Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) and WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s) brought in 1.3 million viewers on Showtime. This was only slightly less than the 1.4 million views that Broner’s previous fight against little known Gavin Rees brought in last February on HBO.

The reason why that fight brought in better numbers than the Broner-Malignaggi bout was because HBO has larger subscriber base. If you put Broner-Malignaggi fight on HBO, the numbers would likely be in the 1.5 to 1.6 million views if not more.

Broner’s last two fights are now the biggest fights on cable this year, according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports.

You have to give Broner a lot of the credit for drumming up support for the Malignaggi fight because he did a good job of getting attention to the fight by conducting a lot of interviews, being available to fans and interviewers, and coming into his press conferences with Malignaggi in what appeared to be a well-rehearsed act to get laughs and attract attention.

Broner appears to be following into the footsteps of his idol Floyd Mayweather Jr. with his ability to hype fight. However, Broner is like the way that Mayweather used to be when he was younger because Mayweather has mellowed significantly to the point where he doesn’t generate the same excitement that he once did.

Showtime Sports executive vice president Stephen Espinosa said this to Yahoo Sports about Broner: “He makes a lot of noise and draws a lot of attention. He rubs people the wrong way, but people react to him. It’s similar to Mayweather in that you either like him and watch to watch him, or you dislike him and want to see him lose.”

Broner will have to do more in the future than just sell fights if he wants to keep bringing in the big numbers. He’s going to eventually have to fight someone really good that can punch because the Malignaggi wasn’t a real test for Broner like he’ll be getting when he faces some of the best welterweights and light welterweights.

Malignaggi, 32, is a fighter that is finishing his career up at this point and he’s not going to be fighting much longer if at all. Broner didn’t really beat a good welterweight that could put him in danger. With Malignaggi, Broner only had worry about being able to win a decision. Against a big puncher at welterweight, Broner would need to focus on trying to avoid getting knocked out.

Fans vote for Broner to face Matthysse next
June 25th, 2013 | Post Comment l Boxing Forum

lucas matthysse adrien broner By Allan Fox: WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner asked boxing fans to pick out his next opponent for him after his 12 round split decision victory last Saturday night. Broner said he’d fight whoever boxing fans picked out for him, and fans have overwhelmingly selected WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse as the guy that they’d like to see Broner face next.

In a poll at RingTV, 43 percent of the fans selected Matthysse as Broner’s next opponent. The next highest total is Marcos Maidana at 28%. Danny Garcia comes in at 12.6 percent.

Now it’s going to be interesting to see if Broner is actually willing to agree to face Matthysse. I think he’s going to have an excuse for not fighting him by saying that Matthysse is facing Danny Garcia next, which may or not actually happen.

Golden Boy wants Broner to fight Maidana, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he face Shane Mosley instead. His name has been one of the names that have been floating around as Broner’s potential opponent for his first defense of his WBA title even before he captured the strap. Mosley would be a recognizable name for Broner while at the same time giving him a safe fight to milk his title for his first defense.

It’s going to look bad if Broner takes a soft opponent for his first defense or even worse if he vacates his WBA title and moves back down to 135 to continue defending his WBC lightweight title against the mostly weak opposition in that weight class.

Matthysse would be a very dangerous fight for Broner. All those shots that Malignaggi was landing against Broner last Saturday night would be potential knockout blows with Matthysse landing them. Broner wouldn’t have the power to hold Matthysse of with his pot shots, and he couldn’t outwork him because Broner doesn’t throw combinations. He’s mostly just a pot-shot type of fighter.

mares vs ponce_10

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- WBC featherweight titleholder Abner Mares will defend his belt against former beltholder Jhonny Gonzalez on Aug. 24 at The StubHub Center (formerly The Home Depot Center) in Carson, Calif., on Showtime, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told RingTV.com on Tuesday.

Mares (26-0-1, 14 knockouts) won the WBC belt by stopping Daniel Ponce de Leon in nine rounds on the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Robert Guerrero card on May 4, making Mares a three-division titlewinner.

Ponce de Leon had won the title with an eight-round technical decision over Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KOs) last September, ending a winning streak by Gonzalez at 12 fights (which included 11 knockouts).

Gonzalez, 31, has since rebounded with consecutive wins over Eusebio Osejo and Akihiko Katagiri by unanimous decision and fourth-round knockout in February and April, respectively.

On the Mares-Gonzalez undercard, WBC junior featherweight titleholder Victor Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KOs) is expected to defend his title against Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KOs).

"We have verbal agreements," Schaefer said. "Mares is going to be fighting Jhonny Gonzalez, and Leo Santa Cruz is moving up in weight to fight WBC champion Victor 'Viking' Terrazas.

"And we're going to do those two fights as a doubleheader on Aug. 24 from Carson, which was the Home Depot Center, but now, it's called the StubHub. It's going to be a terrific, terrific double-header, and I think that it's going to be another sellout in Carson."

Golden Boy's card featuring a fight between Marcos Maidana and Josesito Lopez on June 8 sold out.

Mares, 27, has fought a string of elite opponents, having twice beaten ex-beltholder Joseph Agbeko, earning a decision over former beltholder Vic Darchinyan and battling to a draw with then-beltholder Yonnhy Perez -- all over a 20-month span as a bantamweight -- before moving up to junior featherweight.

After defeating Agbeko by consecutive majority and unanimous decisions, the latter in December of 2011, Mares rose to 122 pounds for a unanimous decision over ex-beltholder Eric Morel in April of last year to earn the WBC's belt.

In November of last year, Mares scored a unanimous decision over WBA bantamweight titleholder Anselmo Moreno, who rose in weight to challenge for the junior featherweight belt. Mares dropped the Panamanian in the fifth round and ended his winning streak at 27.

In Santa Cruz's last fight, also on the May 4 Mayweather-Guerrero card, he debuted as a junior featherweight by dropping former 115-pound beltholder Alexander Munoz twice en route to a fifth-round TKO.

Munoz, who won his first 23 bouts by stoppage, was knocked out for the first time in his career by Santa Cruz, a 24-year-old from Rosemead, Calif. Santa Cruz rose from the bantamweight division, where he won the IBF belt by defeating Vusi Malinga by a unanimous decision last June.

After facing Munoz, Santa Cruz had been mandated to challenge Terrazas, 30, whose promoter, Zanfer President Fernando Beltran, has close ties with Golden Boy rival Top Rank. In April, Terrazas won the belt vacated by Mares, winning a split-decision over Cristian Mijares.

Last month, Golden Boy won the right to promote the Santa Cruz-Terrazas bout, with company representative Ramiro Gonzalez outbidding Zanfer Promotions $526,000 to $451,000.

The Mares-Gonzalez card could become a triple-header if Schaefer is able to place southpaw 126-pounder Gary Russell Jr. (22-0, 13 KOs), of Capitol Heights, Md., on the show.

Schaefer spoke to RingTV.com at The Howard Theatre, where he was participating in a press conference for the Sept. 14 clash between Mayweather and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. It was the second stop in an 11-city tour.

HBO rejected Hopkins vs Stevenson because of the golden boy fued. Richard Schaefer and Hopkins reached out to HBO but they refused, instead it looks like it will be Stevenson vs Tavoris Cloud.
Hella wack, HBO are starting to be big time faggots. Im appreciative of all the good fights theyve had over the years but wtf, how you gonna turn down the oldest champ in boxing history?

Yeah man I thought Hopkins would be the guy to crossover because, well, it's Hopkins. But HBO sticking to their guns.

But it's probably more that HBO doesnt want there new star getting schooled by a 49 year old.
GBP stable is just so good and deep desultory rubbing it in HBO's face. Plus HBO would be so butthurt that old man would ruin another young HBO fight Pavlik, Taylor, and list goes on. Add the Canelo vs. Mayweather fight and HBO feelings are hurt bad.

Hearn: Adonis Stevenson must fight Tony Bellew next; the WBC confirms this
June 27th, 2013 | Post Comment l Boxing Forum

Bellew Stevenson Bellew vs. Stevenson tony bellew adonis stevenson By Scott Gilfoid: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18 KO’s) MUST fight his #1 WBC mandatory challenger Tony Bellew (20-1, 12 KO’s) next, says Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.

Hearn wrote to the World Boxing Council to get confirmation that Bellew should be the next opponent for Stevenson, and the WBC wrote back and confirmed this, says Hearn. This means that Stevenson is in a position where he has to face Bellew next or else he’ll be in the position where the WBC could strip him of his title.

Hearn said to Sky Sports, “We have received confirmation that Stevenson must fight Bellew next, and the negotiation period will be 28 days after which the fight will go to purse bids…we worked really hard to get to that mandatory position.”

Stevenson wants to get in a bigger fight Bernard Hopkins rather than facing the little known Bellew. Additionally, HBO wants to set up a fight between American Tavoris Cloud and Stevenson next. Stevenson isn’t excited about that fight, but I’m sure he’ll take it if the money is good. It’s a decent first defense.

As far as Bellew goes, it’s possible they could convince him and Hearn to step aside if they give him a step aside payment so that Stevenson can fight whoever he wishes. Another way around the Bellew title defense would be for Stevenson to fight a unification bout against one of the other light heavyweight champions.

However, I don’t see there being a great deal of interest from the other 175 lb. champions in fighting a talent like Stevenson because he hits too hard, he’s too fast and he fights out of the southpaw stance. Hopkins, Beibut Shumenov and Nathan Cleverly have said nothing about wanting to fight Stevenson and I see that staying that way because he’s just too talented.

Hearn is really doing Bellew no favors in trying to put him in with Stevenson because the Canadian based fighter will destroy the slower, taller Bellew without any problems. That’s not a winnable fight for Bellew as far as I’m concerned. Stevenson punches with too much speed and power for a slow, easy to hit guy like Bellew to beat him.

Earlier this month, Stevenson starched WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson in one round after nailing him with a hard left to the head that put Dawson down for the count.

For his part, Bellew is coming off of an unimpressive 12 round unanimous decision win over Isaac Chilemba last month. Bellew looked exhausted the entire second half of the fight and basically just smothered Chilemba and his own punches by wrestling and holding on the inside.

It was awful to look at and I thought Bellew should have lost points for wrestling instead of fighting.

Malignaggi: Broner should give me a rematch; people know who really won
June 27th, 2013 | Post Comment l Boxing Forum

Broner Malignaggi Broner vs. Malignaggi paulie malignaggi adrien broner By Eric Thomas: Former WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s) feels he should have been given the decision in his title defense against Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) last Saturday night, and he wants a rematch with him.

Malignaggi thinks the fans who saw the fight know who really won that fight, and he wants a second chance to prove that he’s the better fighter.

Malignaggi said this as quoted by USAtoday.com “He would give me a rematch because he knows who won that fight. I think the majority of people who once they’re not influenced by the Compu-box numbers, which are total BS anyway, you know who really won that fight.”

The judges gave Broner the win by a 12 round split decision with Broner getting the scores of 115-113 and 117-111 for him, and 115-113 for Malignaggi.

Malignaggi says he may opt to retire unless Broner chooses to fight him again. Malignaggi may need to speak with his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions because they’re the ones that are making Broner’s fights. Malignaggi may also have to speak with Broner’s adviser Al Haymon because he’s also a huge part in Broner’s match-making.

Haymon might not see it being advantageous to Broner’s career to go backwards to fight Malignaggi again when he already beat him. There are bigger fights out there for Broner than facing Malignaggi again, and it’s probable that Golden Boy will be seeing things along the same lines as Haymon in this regard.

If there’s a choice between matching Broner against Malignaggi in a rematch or in a fight against Marcos Maidana, the #2 WBA contender, Maidana will probably be the guy that gets that fight because he’s got good power, and he brings a lot of excitement to his fights.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer wants Broner to fight Maidana next. It’s not known yet if Haymon likes this fight, but it’s one of the possibilities right now for Broner. Malignaggi’s name hasn’t been mentioned for a rematch with Broner.

Malignaggi will have to think about fighting his way back into position for another title shot if he wants to try and recapture his WBA title. Broner will likely be moved forward with his career rather than having him put in a lot of time in facing Malignaggi again.

Jeff Mayweather: Floyd Sr. has brought Floyd Jr. back to what he used to be as a fighter
June 27th, 2013 | Post Comment l Boxing Forum

2 3 0

Mayweather Alvarez Mayweather vs. Alvarez saul alvarez floyd mayweather jr (Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr’s uncle Jeff Mayweather believes that Floyd Jr’s recent switch of trainers from Roger Mayweather to his father Floyd Sr. has taken Floyd Jr. back to what the style that he fought back earlier in his career when Mayweather Jr. used movement, speed and defense to win his fights.

Jeff thinks that Floyd Sr. has brought his son Floyd Jr. back to that form, and sees this father son combination being too much for WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to handle when he faces Mayweather Jr. on September 14th.

Jeff said to thaboxingvoice “Floyd [Sr.] is the voice. All he’s done is instill the memory of what his son used to do. He’s got him back boxing, he’s got him back using his legs, fighting like he used to.”

It was Floyd Sr. that taught his son to box originally, and it was Roger Mayweather that took over the training later on, but the foundation was built by Floyd Sr. Now that Mayweather Jr. is back with his father, he’s become the elusive boxer with the flashy speed and outstanding defense that he had in the early 90s when he was boxing circles around his opponents.

It’s amazing how Floyd Sr. was able to snap Mayweather Jr. back into that mode with a single training camp. Like Jeff said, it was bringing back the memory of how Mayweather Jr. used to fight and we’re seeing how he was.

Canelo is getting Mayweather Jr. at the wrong time. If Canelo had fought him last year while Roger was still training Mayweather Jr., he might have a puncher’s chance to beat him, but not now with Floyd Sr. training him again.

Canelo needs his opponents to stand in front of him because he’s a flat-footed fighter for the most part, and that’s not going to happen in this fight on September 14th.

Mayweather Jr. will be an elusive target and Canelo will be forced to try and beat Mayweather by throwing jabs, something Canelo isn’t very consistent with, and pot shots. In a fight where both fighters are throwing pot shots, Mayweather Jr. is going to win every time because of his speed.
