KARIM MAYFIELD: "I'LL BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF BRONER"
By Percy Crawford | July 02, 2013
"They got the boy Broner talking about who the fans want to see him fight next. That would be a beautiful fight for me. I will fight dude at 140, 147 all day. Honestly, I thought he was gonna stop Paulie Malignaggi because I helped Paulie get ready for that fight, and with that being said, I got the usual of what happens to me. I got sent home early...I'll beat the shit out of Broner. I saw all I had to see from him and recognize it. That would be a good fight for me right now. Of course I want Danny Garcia, but the kid got his track shoes on; he ain't looking towards this way. He might not be looking towards the Argentinian way [Lucas Matthysse] and I will definitely give it to him too. Everybody running from him. I ain't running. I'm gonna tell you that right now. If I'm running, I'm rushing to fight them, ya dig! I had a tough road, man. I'm ready. I been fighting these type of guys," stated undefeated jr. welterweight contender Karim Mayfield, who talked about his future plan, including a potential return to the ring on September 7, and much more. Check it out!
PC: Congratulations on signing with Top Rank Promotions. How did it come about?
KM: Well, Top Rank been seeing me. They offered me a few fights in the past. They seen me get down with Pacquiao, man; Bob Arum himself seen it. I guess they were waiting for me to get up in the rankings first to make sure I was the real deal, and they see I have been capitalizing on each opportunity that was presented to me and it was a good fit.
PC: Can we expect to see you campaign at 140, where we are accustomed to seeing you at, or will you go up to 47 where Top Rank has some heavy hitters at?
KM: Considering that only my last 4 fights have been at junior welterweight, because normally, I had been fighting at 147 pounds, so at any time, if an opportunity presents itself, I will definitely capitalize on a 147 fight. With that being said, I'm still campaigning at 140 and I plan on cleaning out the division. But if the right opportunity comes forth, I'm definitely looking forward to taking one of those fights.
PC: Is signing with Top Rank you conceding to the fact that you don't think Danny Garcia was ever going to fight you?
KM: For the most part, I hadn't been signed by a major company and I had been ranked in the top 10 without the major backing of a promoter. I was signed by a major promoter and they offered a date soon. I don't know if I would say barking up the wrong tree, but there are a couple of 140-pound fighters that Golden Boy has and I don't see them making me first choice or giving me an opportunity.
PC: You have been in many camps with world champions. Do you feel like the work that you gave them in the gym kind of hindered your ability to get some of the fights you have been wanting?
KM: That could be a reason. In hindsight, you look at it like I wish maybe I wouldn't have went in...honestly though, I'm not the only one that can get down. I'm sure there are cats out there who are doing things. I don't know if they are doing it like me and working these champions over when given the opportunities, but this kind of stuff been going on for a long time. I think that once they look at my record and compare they record to it, like a Danny Garcia, he ain't fighting nobody, man. None of these cats got an old school record like mine. I wasn't even 10 fights in and I think I had fought 5 or 6 undefeated guys. Not only were they undefeated, but they were promoter's fighters, and that's from everybody from Dan Goosen to Lou DiBella and Don King and Floyd's guys; you name them. Golden Boy, I have been matched up against their guys. But going back to your question, I can see that being a reason, but in a little bit, they ain't gonna be able to stop me.
PC: I watched the video that was put out by you on WSHH and watching that video, it seems like the thing that gets under your skin the most is that Danny Garcia acted like he didn't know who you were. Is that the main thing that bothers you about the Garcia situation?
KM: I have been raised a whole different way, so I wouldn't say it got under my skin. When it's suckas around, you don't let suckas get to you, you know what I mean? It may have been a little irritating, but for the most part, I can't let it bother me too much. To me and where I came up, that's called sucka shit. That's hoe shit. And really, that video was supposed to...right when they say, "Who is that boy," and he say, "I don't know," it was supposed to have a clip in there that says, "You know you done fucked up, right?" He say he didn't know who I was when I was there giving him work. But he gonna say he didn't know. He real carried off for saying that. And then it's like, okay, who is this guy? Who trying to hide him?
PC: Now you are with a big promoter. When can we expect you in the ring?
KM: Hopefully we will be on the September 7th card, if I'm not mistaken; the Cesar Chavez Jr. at the Staples Center card. We trying to work out a few things right now before we see who my opponent will be, but hopefully I will be on that card. We are in negotiations about fighting in September.
PC: I know fighters don't like to over-peak. Have you been in the gym or just taking it easy until something came up?
KM: It's a trip you said that because I was just telling my folks this. They got this strength coach out here and they were asking me why I'm not working out with him. I told them I'm doing enough to maintain, that way I don't peak too early. Certain aspects of my training, I don't go into it until I'm literally like 6 to 8 weeks out. Other than that, I'm training to maintain is what I say. But 6 weeks out, I'm training and gaining. I been giving Andre Berto rounds and a few other fighters. So I train and get in work with elite and world-class fighters and stay on my game; and I'm still sharp and giving them 5, 6 to 7 rounds and I'm 8 months removed from my last fight. I'm getting world-class fighters 6 to 7 rounds, so I would say I'm definitely in good condition still.
PC: I can't wait to see you back in there. Congrats again on the signing. I know you always got something for me in closing, so what you got my man?
KM: My closing thoughts, man, they got the boy Broner talking about who the fans want to see him fight next. That would be a beautiful fight for me. I will fight dude at 140, 147 all day. Honestly, I thought he was gonna stop Paulie Malignaggi because I helped Paulie get ready for that fight, and with that being said, I got the usual of what happens to me. I got sent home early. I was only in there for 2 weeks and dude was talking about he was peaking. I'm like, "Bruh, you a month out." That was that work I was giving him. So they sent me home early. Paulie is a cool fighter, but if I wanted to push the gas on him, I could have pushed the gas on him. And to keep it 1,000 with you (laughing), I'm about to give you an exclusive, right; I asked him to mention me because he was about to be commentating a Showtime event when he did Peterson/Matthysse, so I told him to throw my name out there for someone who he had been sparring with to get ready. Dude didn't say my name on the Showtime date, so I was like, "Come Monday, I'm finna put full gas on him." I'm thinking in my mind I'm finna get sent home. But I spoke to my advisor and he was like, "Karim, don't get sent home yet. You got a month left and it's a lot of exposure for you with Showtime and they paying you good." So I didn't even give him full gas and I still got sent home. So with that being said, I thought Broner was going to stop him because I know I didn't give him full gas and I knew Broner would be going hard, and the dude won a split decision; man, that's crazy. So in closing, I'll beat the shit out of Broner. I'm ready. I been fighting these type of guys
