Evander Holyfield is in Serious Financial Trouble

Evander Holyfield is in Serious Financial Trouble
Posted by: Mark Vester on 06-05-2008.

Former four-time heavywieght champion Evander Holyfield is hit with another legal issue in a month's time. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the mother of Holyfield's ten-year-old son, one of his nine children, filed a petition in Fayette County Superior Court claiming the fighter has missed two child support payments.

Toi Irvin was told by Holyfield's representatives to not to expect the payments for May and June or $6,000 in total. The report also says that his estate in Fayette County, worth $10 million dollars, is under foreclosure and is set to be auctioned by Washington Mutual Bank on July 1. On top of that, Holyfield is still being sued by a Utah consulting company for failing to repay a $550,000 loan for landscaping work on his 235-acre estate.

The full number is unknown, but most say that Holyfield has made over $100 million over the course of his career

Why Are There So Few Asians In The Boxing Hall Of Fame?

05.06.08 - By Ted Sares: I have discussed and written about this subject on any number of occasions and sites, but given that this is Hall of Fame week in Canastota, it seems timely to write about it again. It’s just seems there is a marked paucity of boxers from Asian countries represented in the International Boxing Hall Of Fame. After all, the word “International” is in the name.

Yes, Filipino great Flash Elorde and Thai legend Khaosai Galaxy are in and so is Masahiko “Fighting” Harrada, but that’s only three and that’s far from enough in my view. And to have no South Korean inductees is totally baffling. Perhaps the following list can jog some memories or induce some research, but if even one person who has the privilege of voting has to ask “who are these guys,” the problem goes much deeper than it might appear:

South Korean

In-Chul Baek - 1980-1990

Jung-Koo “The Korean Hawk” Chang -1980-1991

In-Jin Chi -1991-2006

Soo-Hwan Hong - 1969-1980

Ki-Soo Kim- 1961-1969 (South Korea's first world boxing champion)

Chong-Pal Park- 1977-1988

Myung-Woo “Sonagi” Yuh - 1983-1992

Japanese

Yuri Arbachakov -1990-1997 (alias Yuri Ebihara) Russian born but fought out of Japan and was the first Russian professional boxing champion)

Hiroyuki Ebihara- 1959-1969

Yoko “Fierce Eagle” Gushiken- 1974-1981

Hiroshi Kobayashi - 1962-1971

Masao Ohba - 1966-1973 (Ohba was fatally injured in car accident in 1973)

Yoshio Shirai- 1943-1952

Masamori Tokuyama -1994-2006 (North Korean born but fought out of Japan)

Jiro Watanabe- 1979-1986

Thai

Sot Chitalada - 1983-1992

Chartchai Chionoi- 1960-1975

Pone Kingpetch - 1954-1966

Muangchai “J-Okay” Kittikasem- 1988-1999

Samart Payakaroon-1982-1994 (Also was a legend of Muay Thai boxing)

Filipino

Luisito “Golden Boy” Espinosa -1984-2005

Rolando “Bad Boy from Dadiangas” Navarrete- 1973-1991

Jesus “The Hawaiian Punch” Salud-1983-2002 (Born in Philippines fights out of the U.S.)

Ben Villaflor - 1966-1976

Ceferino “Pedro” Garcia -1923-1945 (Was first Filipino-American World Middleweight Boxing Champion inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame)
Old timer section)

For starters, here are my top five for induction:

Yuri Arbachakov - 23-1
Jung Koo Chang - 38-4
Yoko Gushiken - 23-1
Masao Ohba - 35-2-1
Ceferino Garcia- (For Old Timer Section)

I could list many others, great boxers like Joey Archer, Nigel Benn, Dave Sands, Hilario Zapata and Danny “Little Red” Lopez, but this is specifically about Asian fighters.

Each year that a potential inductee is neglected will make it easier to neglect him again, and this is particularly so when only one or two fighters are inducted such as in 2008.

Everyone has been looking for Winky Wright and he was finally found on Wednesday in Brooklyn, New York for the boxing card featuring Yusaf Mack vs. Daniel Judah. Wright, speaking with Teddy Atlas and Joe Tessitore, said that he wants to return to the ring in September and is hoping to land a major fight with either WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik or Oscar De La Hoya. Wright has been out of the ring since last July's decision loss to Bernard Hopkins.

"A lot of people don't want to fight me. People can say what they want but a lot people don't want to fight me. I want to fight with the Pavliks and the De La Hoyas," Wright said. "I still got that fire. This is the longest that I've been off, almost a year. I can't wait to get back in the ring. I'm looking at September to get back in the ring. Hopefully I can get somebody like a De La Hoya or a Pavlik."

Wright was in attendance as the co-promoter of the card. He wants to eventually go full-time with promoting.

"That's the way I want go. I want to go full-time into the promotional business," Wright said

ATTN: Winky .. make a fight with Anthony Mundine. Dude has been calling you at is dropping down to 160lbs and is not only a good money fight, if it happens in Australia, but he's beatable. Stay fucking active and get somewhat noticed.

Yuriokis Gamboa vs Jorge Barrios, James Kirkland vs Joel Julio?

By Mark Vester

HBO was so impressed with the trio that appeared on the recent "Night of The Rising Stars," that a second appearance for all three, Alfredo Angulo, James Kirkland and Yuriorkis Gamboa, is being discussed with their promoter, Gary Shaw. MaxBoxing/BoxingScene.com's Steve Kim reports that a date of October 11 is being thrown around for the show.

The two of the three bouts could get very interesting. The fighters will be matched even tougher for their second stint on HBO. Former champion Jorge Barrios (47-3, 34KOs) is being discussed for Gamboa (10-0, 8KOs), the fighter with the most hype of the three. Gamboa will see action again on June 27 against Jose Rojas in Florida. Barrios has not been most active fighter in the last two-years, battling injuries and postponements that were beyong his control. Barrios may also go forward with a previously planned bout with Rocky Juarez.

It doesn't get any easier, Kim notes that Joel Julio (33-1, 30KOs) is one of the names being looked at for Kirkland (22-0, 19KOs). Julio has won six in a row since the sole loss to Carlos Quintana in 2006, with four of the wins coming by knockout. In some of those wins, Julio appeared to struggle at times. Kirkland can punch with either hand and has shown explosive power. A fight with Julio will be a step up in the right direction.

What do you guys think, Mayweather pulling a Sugar Ray Leonard?????????????

So the Oscar de la hoya fight is OFF????

Mayweather retires again!

Friday, June 6 2008

Dear Media:

It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport. I have said numerous times and after several of my fights over the past two years that I might not fight again. At the same time, I loved competing and winning and also wanted to continue my career for the fans, knowing they were there for me and enjoyed watching me fight. However, after many sleepless nights and intense soul-searching I realized I could no longer base my decision on anything but my own personal happiness, which I no longer could find. So I have finally made up my mind, spoken to my family, particularly my mother, and made my decision. I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead, including the one right around the corner. But there comes a time when money doesn't matter. I just can't do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time. Finally, I want to personally thank all of my fans for their loyalty and dedication as my career comes to a close. I always believed that their enthusiasm and support helped carry me to victory with every fight I ever had. It was a great joy to have fought for all of you. Now I hope you understand my decision and wish me well with the rest of my life.

-Floyd Mayweather Jr.

LIVE FIGHTS TONIGHT ON ESPN 2 AT 8:30 PM ET.

ESPN 2 has a pretty dope main event tonight with Herman Ngoudjo taking on former 140lb champion Souleymane M'baye. Sebastian Demers gets a showcase fight against Sam Hill.

I could've sworn Jean Pascal was supposed to get beat up on this card by Fulgencio Zuniga but apparently the fight got called off for some reason.
