By Mark Vester

Super bantamweight Jhonny Gonzalez (38-6, 32KOs) is said to be returning to action on August 1 at the Desert Diamond Casino in Arizona. Gonzalez told notifight that he asked Golden Boy Promotions to push for a WBC eliminator or a some kind of an interim-title to be up for grabs.

Gonzalez wants to put himself in a position to force a rematch with Israel Vazquez. The fought in a fight-of-year runner-up in 2006. After being knocked down twice during the bout, Vazquez came back to knock Gonzalez out in the tenth.

After the loss to Vazquez, Gonzalez dropped down to the bantamweight division and won the WBO title. He overtrained to make weight for his first defense of the title against Gerry Penalosa, and paid the price when he was stuck with a hard bodyshot that put him down for the count in the seventh. Gonzalez has since moved back up to 122.

Julio Diaz vs. David Torres at The Playboy Mansion on 6/25

LOS ANGELES – Former lightweight world champion Julio “Kidd” Diaz (34-4, 25 KOs) will face unbeaten David “El Torrito” Torres (20-0, 13 KOs) in a 10 round bout on Wednesday, June 25, from the world famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif. (ESPN2 11:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. PT).

Diaz, coming off a tough ninth round TKO loss against former lightweight kingpin Juan Diaz, is looking to get back into championship contention with a solid performance over the undefeated Torres.

“It’s all about looking and feeling good,” Diaz said. “I need to settle into my comfort zone early and build momentum from there. I expect to dominate the fight from start to finish.”

Newly signed to Sycuan Ringside Promotions, Henry “Sugar Poo” Buchanan (16-1, 11 KOs) will display his super middleweight skills on national television against Brian Norman (16-7, 4 KOs) in an 8 round fight that precedes Diaz-Torres.

“Fighting on national TV is a big step up for me,” said Buchanan, who is an uncle to San Diego Chargers All-Pro linebacker Shawn Merriman. “There is more pressure to perform well when you’re on ESPN. Fans at home can pick apart your game and give opinions. I want to be able to leave a good impression on the viewers and the fans in attendance.”

Sycuan Ringside Promotions (SRP) of San Diego, Calif. will promote the evening of boxing aptly titled, “Tribal Pride at the Playboy Mansion.”

Japan Commission To Use Instant Replay in WBC Fights

The Japan Boxing Commission has agreed to use instant replay in WBC title fights.

The WBC is very happy with this development regarding the instant replay rule, which was adopted during the 45th Annual WBC World Convention in Manila, Philippines, in November 2007.

At first, the JBC did not accept the use of the rule and a major injustice came very close to happening in Japan when champion Hozumi Hasegawa fought Simone Maludrottu in January, 2008.

Hasagawa sustained a large cut on his eyelid. The referee did not see the headbutt that produced it, and ruled that the cut was caused by a legal punch. During the rest period between rounds, the replay – which clearly showed that the cut was caused by a headbutt - was shown to millions of fans who were watching on television as well as thousands of fans in the arena who could see the giant video screens.

Fortunately, the fight went to a decision and Hasegawa won, but had the fight been stopped on the cut, Hasegawa would have lost his title.

The Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation has announced the use of the four- and eight-round open scoring in all OPBF title fights.

This innovative rule has been proven to bring excitement and competitiveness to fights around the world.

More than 45 countries are using open scoring in title bouts, and there has not been one negative incident

yep. Interesting match up, I mean a pro debut, who was an Olympian for Venezuela, fighting a guy who's 2-0 with 2 first round KO's.
Possibly one of my all time favorite things to see. Two guys with everything to lose, trying to get their careers off the ground, trying to make the most out of the 4 rounds they got on TV. I wouldn't mind this being a draw cause I don't wanna see either of these guys take a loss after a fight like that.

Solis denied U.S. visa again!

Thursday, June 5 2008

Solis vs. Botha moved to July 4th

Originally Arena Box-Promotion had planned to present heavyweight sensation Odlanier Solis in the USA on May 17th, 2008 but the Cuban Olympic gold medallist was denied a visa. Now Arena's attorneys have tried again to get "La Sombra" into the US but the Consulate in Berlin denied the application again. Apparently the US authorities presume the three-time world amateur champion could stay in Miami like his fellow defectors Yan Barthelemy and Yuriorkis Gamboa did. Actually Solis is currently planning to buy a house in Cologne, Germany to settle down there. "Obviously the US authorities don’t want to have a future world champion in their country right now," said Arena CEO Ahmet Öner.

"Anyways I am sure that I'll be able to present Solis sooner or later. For now the Turkish fans are lucky as we will hold the fight with Botha in Istanbul as originally planned and I am sure that it will be a great show." Solis-Botha will take place as co-main event for the

European heavyweight championship between Sinan Samil Sam and Matt Skelton scheduled for July 4th 2008 at Bagcilar Olympic Sport Complex in Istanbul/Turkey. As a warm-up for Istanbul, Solis will be back in action this Saturday in Hattersheim (close to Frankfurt) against 20-year-old Harry Duiven Jr. (12-2-1, 10 KOs).

Euro News: Khan Helped By Fewkes, Wale Signs With Haye

By Mark Vester

Undefeated lightweight/junior welterweight prospect John Fewkes is sparring with Amir Khan, helping the UK superstar prepare for his bout on June 21 against Michael Gomez. Fewkes is said to be making a very good account of himself during their sparring sessions, according to Fewkes' trainer Glyn Rhodes.

Josh Wale, and unbeaten super bantamweight prospect, has signed a promotional deal with David Haye's Hayemaker Promotions. The deal is said to be for three-years with ten of Fewkes' fights being televised by Setanta Sports and he will be placed on Haye's undercards.

Haye's recent signing with Golden Boy Promotions will send provide Wale with a window to America. He is already going to used as a sparring partner for Israel Vazquez in the near future.

"We went down to the O2 Arena and met with David Haye and went through the contract and everything. They seemed to know everything about me, they knew every fight and what they want to do with me. It's brilliant to have this deal because it's going to be boxers I'm working with and they know the game best, "Wale told the South Yorkshire Times.

"I met with De La Hoya's manager Richard Schaefer as well and this contract should have me fighting in America and they are planning on sending me over to spar at the training camp in California. I should be going out there in the next couple of months to spar with Israel Vazquez."

Winky Wright Eyes September Return, Wants De La Hoya

By Mark Vester

Everyone has been looking for Winky Wright and he was finally found on Wednesday in Brooklyn, New York for the boxing card featuring Yusaf Mack vs. Daniel Judah. Wright, speaking with Teddy Atlas and Joe Tessitore, said that he wants to return to the ring in September and is hoping to land a major fight with either WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik or Oscar De La Hoya. Wright has been out of the ring since last July's decision loss to Bernard Hopkins.

"A lot of people don't want to fight me. People can say what they want but a lot people don't want to fight me. I want to fight with the Pavliks and the De La Hoyas," Wright said. "I still got that fire. This is the longest that I've been off, almost a year. I can't wait to get back in the ring. I'm looking at September to get back in the ring. Hopefully I can get somebody like a De La Hoya or a Pavlik."

Wright was in attendance as the co-promoter of the card. He wants to eventually go full-time with promoting.

"That's the way I want go. I want to go full-time into the promotional business," Wright said
