LOL@ Inspector Che Guevara!

Margarito Had "Suspect Bandage Wrap" For Mosley Bout

By Mark Vester

According to the Los Angeles Times, a big crowd gathered to view Antonio Margarito's hearing before the California State Athletic Commission, which takes place to hand out a ruling on the foreign substance that was found in his hand wraps before the January 24 bout with Shane Mosley at the Staples Center. Margarito is represented by well-known attorney Daniel Petrocelli.

Observers were stunned as the state attorney general started off by stating that Margarito should receive "the harshest penalty possible," including a license revocation, which would leave him on the sidelines for at least one year and would rule out a June 13 rematch with Miguel Cotto in New York.

A state inspector said that Margarito was found to have "a suspect bandage wrap inside a knuckle pad" that was to be placed atop both his fists. Inspector Che Guevara testified at the hearing that in three years and 150 hand wraps he had never seen such a pad.

"It was sweat-soaked, thinner and harder in certain areas, not hard as a rock, but firm and hard," Guevara was quoted as saying by the LA Times . He also said the pad had a stain "like old blood" on it. "It was not flexible. It was very firm," Guevara went on to state.

The "foreign substance" on the insert has not been identified, and the results of the "plaster-like" substance won't be known until mid-March.

More details to follow as they develop.

Margarito's Trainer Takes Full Blame For Hand Wraps

[...]

Margarito's trainer, Javier Capetillo, took full blame for the hand wraps scandal. Capetillo told his attorney that he accidentally implanted inserts into the hand wraps of his fighter.

"I committed a big mistake," Capetillo said. "I don't want this young man [Margarito] to have problems. I'm here to cover any responsibility. I take full responsibility. I committed this innocent mistake."

More Details as They Develop....

It doesn't really take 2 months to get lab results back. They probably knew exactly what it was that following week. We'll see how they handle it though. Plus it doent even matter if it was old hardened peanut butter. You can't have anything like that in your gloves...

why the fuck does it take that long?
I have no idea, maybe lab results to test for plaster material, etc.

Regardless, Margarito's trainer just admitted and takes full responsibility so they will be suspended. I'm sure if the test results come back that it is plaster-like substance than a more severe penalty will be issued.

Antonio Margarito's Trainer Has License Revoked By CSAC

By Mark Vester

According to the Los Angeles Times, Antonio Margarito's trainer Javier Capetillo has had his trainer's license revoked by the California State Athletic Commission. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Turns Down Shane Mosley

By Mark Vester

After Shane Mosley pulled off the performance of a lifetime by knocking out Antonio Margarito on January 24, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer would quickly state that he was planning to speak with the team of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to explore the possibility of a Mayweather-Mosley bout. Mayweather has been retired since mid-2008, but a month ago his adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, said Floyd had directed him to review potential fight offers.

Schaerfer spoke with Mayweather's manager Al Haymon, who told him that Floyd would not come out of retirement for a Mosley bout.

"I was told by [Mayweather's manager] Al Haymon that Floyd was not coming out of retirement to fight Shane Mosley. I feel bad for Shane. It's as if he looked too good in his last fight. It was the best performance of his career and maybe it made some guys not want to face him," said Schaefer to Sports Illustrated.

Some of Mosley's options include Andre Berto, Joshua Clottey and a rematch with Miguel Cotto.

"I have had a few preliminary conversations with [Cotto promoter] Bob Arum," said Schaefer. "I was told even before [the Margarito suspension] that Cotto preferred to fight Shane over Margarito. I'm sure we will talk some more."

^ Saw that coming. Floyd wouldn't have a lot to gain by beating Mosley, and would have everything to lose.

Even though Shane looked amazing against Tony, another bad performance, and everyone will be crying about how Shane is washed up, and way past his prime.

I think at this point the only fight that will lure him out of retirement is a fight with Manny.

Cocaine-Fueled Johnny Tapia Committed to Psych Ward

By T.K. Stewart

Five-time world champion Johnny Tapia, locked in battle once again with his cocaine demons, has been committed to the psychiatric ward of the Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

BoxingScene can also reveal that an anonymous source telephoned Tapia's long-time probation officer on Tuesday morning and told her that Tapia was using cocaine.

According to a spokesperson at the New Mexico State Department of Corrections, the probation officer then called Tapia at his home and he admitted to her that he was using cocaine which is in violation of the terms of his probation for a prior drug offense. Within hours the former champ was again behind bars.

Tapia, who turns 42 today, has essentially been retired since February 2007 when he last appeared in the ring with a 10-round majority decision win over Evaristo Primero. On a few occasions over the past two years there were rumors that Tapia was going to make a return to the fight game but the bouts never came to fruition.

A representative at the Metro Detention Center in Albuquerque would only confirm that Tapia was brought into custody on Tuesday afternoon, that an evaluation was performed and that Tapia was admitted to the psychiatric ward. No messages are able to be passed on to him by the press.

Tapia has battled against cocaine addiction for over two decades and as a result he has had many run-ins with the law. He has been in and out of jail, rehab and the hospital on numerous occasions over the years. His life story was well documented in the 2006 book 'Mi Vida Loca' or 'My Crazy Life' written by Bettina Gilois, in which Tapia claimed he has cheated death on five occasions.

A month after his last fight, Tapia overdosed in a New Mexico hotel room and slipped into a coma. As a result of that incident he was charged with possession of a controlled substance and placed on probation. He was given a second and third chance by Judge Kenneth H. Martinez in April 2008 and again in August 2008.

According to public records obtained by BoxingScene, Tapia admitted to his probation officer last summer that he had done "one line of cocaine." However, at the time Judge Martinez did not feel that alone was reason enough to revoke Tapia's probation and that little good would come of incarcerating him.

Tapia claims his drug problems are the result of trying to deal with the death and memory of his mother. Tapia's mother, Virginia, was stabbed 26 times in a brutal murder that went unsolved for over two decades. Tapia's father was also murdered in a separate incident. Tapia was eight years old at the time of his mother's death.

"I've tried to get over it in the past," said Tapia in his book of his mother's murder. "I've been on so many different kinds of medications. I've been to so many treatments and psychiatrists and therapy. It all hasn't worked. None of it. Not for the long run."

Tapia is currently being held without bond until he appears before a judge. Calls by BoxingScene to Tapia's wife, Teresa, who also served as his manager, have not been returned.

KHAN VS BARRERA ON PPV

Integrated Sports will distribute a world-class pay-per-view card, headlined by Amir Khan versus “The Baby Faced Assassin” Marco Antonio Barrera, Saturday, March 14 live from The M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom.
Three 12-round championship bouts are featured for live viewing at 4 PM/ET - 1 PM/PT on cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network in the United States, as well as Viewer’s Choice and Bell TV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95.

Khan (19-1, 15 KOs), 2004 Olympic silver medallist, defends his WBA International lightweight title against seven-time world champion Barrera (65-6, 42 KOs) in the 12-round main event. The two other PPV fights will be former WBO cruiserweight title-holder Enzo Maccarinelli (29-2, 22 KOs) against NABO champ Ola “Kryptonite” Afolabi (13-1-3, 5 KOs) for the WBO cruiserweight championship, while WBO super middleweight champion Nicky “Cookie” Cook (29-1, 16 KOs) defends his title belt against undefeated No. 1 contender Roman “Rocky” Martinez (21-0-1, 12 KOs).

“We’re thrilled to be distributing this sensational tripleheader to North American boxing fans,” Integrated Sports president Doug Jacobs said. “The main event is a potential classic match-up between a top prospect, Khan, and veteran warrior, Barrera. Fans are very interested to see how Khan has improved since he started working with trainer Freddy Roach as well as what future Hall of Famer Barrera has left. Maccarinelli-Afolabi and Cook-Martinez shape-up as two very fan-friendly bouts, too, and either could be main events.”

The 22-year-old Khan is coming off of a win by second-round TKO of Oisin Fagan for the WBA International title last December, which was three months after Amir suffered his only pro loss to Breidis Prescott. Khan, rated No. 9 by the WBO and No. 13 by the IBF, has been training at Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, where he’s gained invaluable experience sparring with the likes of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

Barrera, 35, has held world titles in three different weight classes during his 19-year pro career. He recently suffered a scare when he was cut from a head-butt, which temporarily jeopardized his March 21st showdown with Kahn, that lead to a win by third-round disqualification. Barrera holds wins against world champions and/or challengers such as Erik Morales (twice), Paulie Ayala, Prince Naseem Hamed Robbie Peden, Mzonke Fana, Kevin Kelly, Johnny Tapia, and Rocky Juarez (twice).

Maccarinelli, fighting out of his native Wales, has only one blemish on his pro record, losing a year ago to David Haye in their title unification bout. “Macca,” is ranked No. 3 by the WBO.

The WBO No. 5 rated London-born Afolabi, now living in California, captured the NABO crown last April, stopping previously unbeaten Eric Fields in the 10th round.

Cook won the WBO super featherweight title in his last fight in September, taking a 12-round unanimous decision from Alex Arthur (26-1) in The M.E.N. Arena.

In addition to being the WBC’s top contender, Puerto Rican boxer Martinez is rated No. 4 by the WBA and No. 6 by the IBF. The reigning NABO super featherweight title-holder also held the WBO Inter-Continental and WBO Latino belts.

^ I didn't want to have to pay to watch that fight. Jeez. I guess it might do big business in the UK, but I don't know many people who even know the fight is happening here.
