Margarito Eyes Cotto Rematch, Mosley Wrongdoing Denied

By Mark Vester

Francisco Espinoza, co-manager of Antonio Margarito, says his fighter is still looking ahead to a June rematch with Miguel Cotto. The rematch plan was in place long before Margarito’s knockout loss to Shane Mosley last Saturday in California. Unless Top Rank has another plan, Espinoza expects for that fight to happen.

“We are interested in the fight with Cotto, but we have to see what the promoters say. If it won’t be Cotto then we will look for another opponent, but we would like to fight Cotto again,” Espinoza said to Primera Hora.

Evangelista Cotto, Miguel’s uncle and trainer, may have other plans. Cotto won a decision over Molsey in 2007 and a rematch is a good possibility. But Arum had previously said in other interviews that win or lose against Mosley, Margarito would still have a rematch with Cotto.

“A rematch with Mosley is attractive to us. When we speak with Bob Arum, we will know what is going to happen.but first we have to beat [Michael] Jennings who is a good boxer and we cannot get distracted,” Evangelista said.

Espinoza touched on the hand wraps controversy with Margarito. Last Saturday, 30-minutes before Margarito would head to the ring to fight Mosley, a “plaster-like” material was found in Margarito’s wraps by an inspector for the California State Athletic Commission. Mosley’s trainer, Nazim Richardson, saw something strange with Margarito’s wraps and asked to feel them.

“When he put the wrapping on, I asked if I could feel it and when I felt it, I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, this is too hard,’ ” Richardson said to Yahoo Sports.

“When the commission flipped the [tape] over, a little block of gauze-like plaster fell out. I said, ‘Unwrap the other hand,’ and they were saying, ‘Oh, oh, the other hand is good.’ I asked the commissioner, ‘What if I unwrap the other hand at the end of the fight and it falls out of there, too?’

Dean Lohuis, the co-interim executive director of the California State Athletic Commission, told Yahoo Sports that both pieces of the plaster-like material were slipped in underneath the legal tape that was already placed on Margarito’s hands by his trainer Javier Capetillo. Mosley’s attorney Judd Burstein had to arrive in the dressing room before a member of the commission put the pieces in a box and handed them to Lohuis.

“[Richardson] made them unwrap it. And when they unwrapped the other hand, another one fell out. It was wet with a little plaster on it.”

Margarito had to rewrap his hands three times before they were deemed legal.

Espinoza says that nobody on Margarito’s team did anything illegal and everything will be cleared up when the California commission is done with their investigation.

"We did not do anything illegal. What happened was that Capetillo prepared the gauzes that are used, two weeks before [the fight] and had them in a lump with cloth that apparently was humid and therefore hardened,” Espinoza said. “There was no substance like that there [the plaster]. The commission asked us to bandage his hands again and we did.”

Shane Mosley-Joshua Clottey is Being Explored

By Mark Vester

Top Rank's Bob Arum has spoken with Golden Boy Promotions about the possibility of a unification bout between WBA champion Shane Mosley (46-5, 39KOs) and Joshua Clottey (30-2, 20KOs), who hold the IBF title. Arum says Golden Boy is open to a bout between Mosley and Clottey. The idea being discussed is for the winner of Mosley-Clottey to face the winner of the June rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. The two winners would collide at the end of the year.

"They are open to the idea that Mosley fights with Clottey and the winner is the frontrunner to the winner of Cotto-Margarito. That fight [of the two winners] could take place in autumn, either in September or October," Arum told Primera Hora.

Clottey is one the most avoided fighters at the welterweight limit. He was outboxing Margarito back in 2006 and appeared to be mounting a decent lead before he injured both hands, which allowed Margarito to take over the fight. He was due to have a rematch with Margarito last November, but that never happened. Margarito wanted more time to recover and relax after being involved in the tough July war with Cotto.

Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito Eyed For June 13 in NY

By Mark Vester

Everything appears to be moving forward as previously planned. Miguel Cotto, should he beat Michael Jennings on February 21, will face Antonio Margarito in a rematch on June 13 in New York's Madison Square Garden. The rematch plans were in doubt when Shane Mosley dominated Margarito last Saturday before knocking him out in the ninth round. Top Rank's Bob Arum sees no reason as to why the Mosley-Margarito rematch should not go forward.

"I still have to talk with Cotto, but the idea still remains for Antonio and Miguel to fight each other in June. Margarito continues being very popular with the Mexican fans and, besides, Miguel will make a lot more money in the rematch," Arum told Primera Hora.

The paper wondered why Arum would not match Cotto in a rematch with Mosley. Cotto won a decision over Mosley at The Garden in 2007. Arum says a fight between Cotto and Margarito will generate more money than a Cotto-Mosley rematch.

"During these times, the idea for Miguel to take a fight with Mosley sounds pretty, but in terms of money - it makes no sense. Mosley is going to want half of everything, and in that sense Miguel would receive less money," Arum said.

Speaking of money, Francisco Espinoza, Margarito's co-manager, does not believe his fighter's loss should affect their income in the Cotto rematch.

"I do not believe that they should pay him less money now. Tony sold almost 21,000 ticket at the Staples Center, something that had never been done by the Lakers in the playoffs or Madonna," said Espinoza to El Nuevo Dia.

"Still, everything is very premature, but I have understood that a [Cotto rematch] is the plan and to seems good to us, but we have to see how Tony feels in the next days. After the fight [with Mosley] they did all of the medical exams and they turned out well. We still have to see what happens with Cotto's next fight, and we have to sit down to negotiate with our promoter."

That list is going to be significantly different in 6 months to a year. Hatton will be out, so will Calzaghe and Hopkins if they don't fight again. You'll probably have Cotto back on there and maybe someone like Arthur Abraham. If Floyd fights again and wins, he'll be back. If Paul Williams keeps winning fights at 3 different weight classes you'll see him there also, or at least if he wins some big fights at 154 and 160. I have my doubts if he'll fight at 147 again.

Now that Margarito has been temporarily suspended, for how long is yet to be determined, Andre Berto says he will step in to face Miguel Cotto in June!

Berto Willing To Step in, Fight Miguel Cotto on June 13

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com was informed by promoter Lou DiBella that WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (24-0, 19KOs) is willing to step in for Antonio Margarito, and take on Miguel Cotto (32-1, 26KOs) in a unification bout on June 13. Cotto still has to deal with his upcoming fight with Michael Jennings, which takes place on February 21 for the vacant WBO title.

DiBella's comments pertain to the recent suspension of Margarito by the California State Athletic Commission. The news came down on Thursday that Margarito, and his trainer, Javier Capetillo, have had their licenses temporarily suspended while the CSAC continues to investigate the foreign substance that was found in Margarito's hand wraps about 30 minutes before last Saturday's fight with Shane Mosley. Each of Margarito's hand wraps were found to have a hard block of gauze that allegedly, from what several witnesses have said on the record, contained a plaster-like substance. The substance found on the blocks of gauze is being analyzed by the California Department of Justice. Margarito and his trainer are scheduled to appear for an initial hearing on February 10, 2009

If the allegations are found to be true, and the suspensions stick, the June 13 rematch between Margarito and Cotto is in the toilet. A few months back, DiBella and Bob Arum [Cotto's promoter] were in talks for a potential Cotto-Berto bout for 2009, but the two sides were far apart on the money. If Margarito is not there, Cotto's choices may come down to Berto or a rematch with Shane Mosley.

Arum's rational to stage a Cotto-Margarito rematch, instead of a rematch with Cotto and Mosley, is Cotto receiving a bigger piece of the money with Margarito. Using Arum's logic, Cotto would certainly receive a far bigger split of the money against Berto than he would against Mosley.

"If Margarito is unavailable for the fight, Berto would love to step in and take his place against Cotto on June 13. They could unify the titles and the winner could fight Luis Collazo," DiBella said.

Ward has a lot of balls to take this fight but methinks too soon for the kid. Glen Johnson is still a beast. And a big beast at that.

Andre Ward-Glen Johnson is Being Discussed

BoxingScene.com was informed that a fight between super middleweight prospect Andre Ward (17-0, 12KOs) and former light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (48-12-2, 33KOs) is being discussed. If a deal can be reached, Ward, a 2004 Olympic gold medal winner, would move up to meet Johnson at a catch-weight of 170 or 171-pounds. Ward's last fight took place at 171. The last time Johnson weighed below 172 was in September 2000. He came in at 178 1/2 for his last fight.

Ward has been trying to land a big signature fight since 2007. He was looking at a possible fight with Edison Miranda and recently made his move to fight Jermain Taylor. Johnson would be a very tough, and risky, step up.

"Andre wants to have a big year," Ward's promoter Dan Goossen told BoxingScene.com.

Both fighters will see action in February. Ward takes on Henry Buchanan on February 6 at the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, California. Johnson returns in a rematch with Daniel Judah on February 27 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Lou DiBella, who co-promotes Johnson, wants to see how both fighters perform in February.

"I think it's a great fight. They both have fights coming up. Maybe they will meet later in the year," DiBella said.

Don't miss tomorrows FNF it's a pretty dope card. Urango and Ngoudjo fight for the title they took from Malignaggi for fighting Ricky Hatton instead of Juan Urango. As gay as that is it's still a pretty cool fight for friday night fights.

Also undefeated Antonin Decarie is on the card .. I've only seen dude fight a few times and he's pretty entertaining. Doesn't seem to have much pop but seems to be fairly exciting.

Urango breaks Ngoudjo's jaw

A fractured jaw in 3 places

We can never say that the boxer Hermann Ngoudjo lack of courage. After meeting with doctors in the wake of his battle to face Juan Urango, the verdict fell; Ngoudjo suffered a triple fracture of the jaw.

Joined by RDS morning, Yvon Michel said that his protégé has shown great courage and determination after being hit by a solid uppercut to Urango in the middle of the 3rd round.

"Hermann is just out of surgery and he suffered a fractured jaw in three places, in addition to having lost a tooth. When I got into the ring at the end of the bout, the first thing he said, "said Yvon Michel.

Remember that Ngoudjo has lost his fight by unanimous decision of the judges facing the Colombian Juan Urango.

uppercut at the start of this video is supposedly the punch that did most of the damage.

Michael Katsidis Decisions Ramirez, Julio Diaz Next

By Mark Vester

At the Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City, Philippines, lightweight Michael Katsidis (24-2, 20 KOs) made his return to the ring and won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific title with a ten round decision over Angel Hugo Ramirez (19-5-2, 8 KO’s). The judges scored it 98-87, 96-89 and 96-89. The win was the first for Katsidis since July 2007. He was coming off back to back defeats to Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz.

Ramirez was on the backfoot for the entire contest, trying to survive as Katsidis stalked and threw power punch combinations to the head and body. Katsidis scored four knockdowns in the fight, including three in the fourth round. Ramirez was a bit soft to the gut and could not stand up to the body punches.

Next up for Katsidis is a showdown with former lightwieght champion Julio Diaz (36-4, 26KOs) on April 10 at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in California.

Zab Judah vs. Carlos Quintana is Being Discussed, winner could fight Andre Berto

BoxingScene.com has learned that a potential fight between former welterweight champions Zab Judah (37-6, 25KOs) and Carlos Quintana (26-2, 20KOs) is being discussed. The idea behind Judah-Quintana is to have the winner fight WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (24-0, 19KOs) at a later date. HBO is interested in the proposed scenario. The network would probably place Judah-Quintana on a future "Boxing After Dark" telecast, and air Berto's fight against the Judah/Quintana winner on their "World Championship Boxing" series.
