Jermain Taylor vs. Carl Froch is on

From Arkansas Democrat Gazette:

Taylor gets shot at belt vs. Froch

BY CHRIS GIVENS

Jermain Taylor is training for another title shot.

Ozell Nelson, Taylor's trainer, confirmed to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette late Tuesday night that Taylor, the former middleweight champion from Little Rock, will fight Englishman Carl Froch (24-0, 19 KOs) for the World Boxing Council super middleweight title on either April 18 or April 25. A site has not been determined, although it will definitely be in the United States. The fight will be televised on Showtime.

Froch won the world title vacated by Joe Calzaghe with a unanimous decision over Jean Pascal on Dec. 6. Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs) earned the title shot with a decisive victory over Jeff Lacy on Nov. 15.

Although Team Taylor discussed several opponents, including Pascal, Allan Green and even Bernard Hopkins, in the end Froch, because of the accessory he carries, was the most attractive option. The fight was made after a lengthy negotiation process.

"It's for the belt," Nelson said. "Jermain can get his belt back, and it will keep him hungry. He had the belt, and he lost it. He's hungry again. Jermain wants to be champion. He said any way possible, make it happen."

Taylor won the middleweight world championship in July 2005 with a victory over Hopkins and held the title until getting knocked out by current middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik on Sept. 29, 2007.

The buildup for the Taylor-Froch fight already has a touch of animosity.

Froch posted a note on his official Web site, www. cobraboxing.com, titled "I will smoke Taylor's boots" that included several disparaging remarks. Froch and his promoter, Mick Hennessy, also have made several comments to British newspapers indicating their belief that Taylor was trying to avoid Froch.

"Carl Froch talked all that trash; that makes it even more important to beat him," Nelson said. "We're probably going to need some good security when they first meet."

Joe Calzaghe Calls it Quits, Announces Retirement

By Mark Vester

Undefeated Joe Calzaghe (46-0) has announced his retirement from boxing. Coming off a banner year in 2008, where he moved up to light heavyweight to win decisions over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr., Calzaghe saw no reason to go any further.

"It was a difficult decision but I have achieved everything I wanted to achieve in boxing," Calzaghe told BBC Sport. "I've been world champion for 11 years. I've got no other goals to go for. That's why I am calling it a day.

"My decision is to retire. I've been boxing for 25 years and, like I said, I've achieved everything I want to achieve. You can never say never in this game, but I can't see myself boxing again. There's loads of things I want to do.

"I'm proud to be one of only a few fighters in history to retire undefeated. My children wanted me to give up, plus my mum. That's why I called it a day and will go on to do something else."

Haha, whats your beef with Calzaghe?
We go over this all the time and I know your reasoning but realistically there is nothing the guy can do (presently) to make you think otherwise.

Who would he have to fight to make you happy?
Just wondering...

I'm going to miss the Darchinyan vs Arce fight tonight...sucks.

Chad Dawson would serve Calzaghe, he better go into retirement. Im pretty sure 2-0's beef as well as mine is why didnt he fight Roy Jones or Hopkins like 7 years ago? It was quite fitting for him to fight them when they were both over the hill even though Hopkins has made a couple fighters look silly

^^thats exactly right my beef is that he was a protected european fighter that fought bums his entire career and didn't step until he was 35 years old when he fought lacy. He beats Kessler (a good win but lets face it kessler is a protected european fighter too) then 43 year old hopkins and 40 year old jones and calls it quits. He got dropped by hopkins, many observers felt hopkins won and instead of giving him a rematch, he fights jones who was shot 5 years ago. He didn't go after Pavlik (who at the time was the fight everyone wanted to see) or chad dawson or glen johnson etc. He may have very well of beatin those fighters, but instead he took the easiest possible challenge against roy jones. That's weak

He should have stepped up years ago.

BTW, Vic Darchinyan was a beast last night. Awesome fight. Arce is a tough son a bitch

I actually caught the stream from hotel room in SD, so I saw the fight last night.

Chad who? I would actually get into this discussion but I find it so ridiculous that we would even bring Chad Dawson up. The guy was studying for his math test in high school while Calzaghe was defending his title. Let's face it, on top of that, Dawson would lose. He should have fought Glen Johnson last December so he could get another gift. Get over it.

He beat up an old Hopkins? As I recall he just beat Winky. Or are you talking about the same Hopkins that put on a boxing exhibition on the "highly" regarded Pavlik? Oh, no, that was an older Hopkins...

In regards of Roy Jones, he was too busy hiding from Dariusz Michalczewski to think about Calzaghe.

pfffffft. Don't even try to say jones was hiding. Prime jones beats Dariusz Michalczewski and you know it. Jones wasn't willing to fight in Germany (and rightfully so). Jones was the star not Dariusz. If anything calzaghe was hiding from jones and never wanted none, not until jones was shot that is. Calzaghe admitted years ago the only fighter he was scared of was jones. So it's no coincidence he waited till he was 40 and already been KO'd twice.

And I'm not arguing that dawson, pavlik or Glen Johnson (who calzaghe was supposed to fight THREE TIMES now) beats calzaghe. My point was calzaghe didn't take a challenge, instead he fought jones who was shot 5 years ago. Thats not debatable. But that's what Calzaghe has done his entire career - took the easiest path possible (which is why he stayed in the 168 division, which is basically a european division never filled with any talent).

As for hopkins, yes hopkins was old. That's not debatable either. To say Hopkins is anything like his prime is crazy. Yes he schooled pavlik, but a prime Hopkins KO's pavlik. Joe getting a win is a good win for him no doubt, in fact his best win of his career. That's not debatable either. But he did look like horse shit against 43 year old hopkins and barely managed a split decision win (like I mentioned many observers, including The Ring & ESPN, scored it for hopkins) despite hopkins being fatigued in the later rounds. Hopkins deserved a rematch but like calzaghe said, he "doesnt do rematches" (although thats not true since he gave Mario Veit a rematch after he KO'd him). Just another case of Joe taking the easy opponent.

Prime RJJ was cleaning divisions out. Was there a lack of talent or was he just that good? That's not something I can really answer. I really think it was a mixture of both. Regardless, that Dariusz fight should have happened...

Yes, I agree, if there were 2 fights on the table...Calzaghe would take the easier one. By easier, I dont necessarily mean it was always the weaker opponent. He wieghed money against difficulty and chose his best option.

There are few fighters that stick to the "I will fight anyone they put in front of me" mentallity. Calzaghe was definately not one of them until of late, but that doesn't make him a bad fighter.

Calzaghe should have stepped up in competition a long time ago but he still had a good career. Kessler is a very good win IMO and Hopkins, while old, is still a good win.

As for the Jones ducking Dariusz, that's crazy IMO. Why go to Germany to fight Dariusz? If that's the case for ducking him Dariusz turned down a fight with Jones in the states so I'd figure that cancels each other out.

.. also fuck Gary Shaw for the Donaire bullshit. Darchinyan's looking better than ever right now and he won't let him attempt to avenge his only loss over some dumb shit? Hopefully they set up Darchinyan vs Montiel .. would be a dope fight while it lasted.

Darchinyan vs Donaire would be a horrible bussiness move. Nonito is who he is because of that KO, I wouldnt gamble it either. It would be a great fight though. I hope it happens, but it probably won't happen any time soon.

Montiel is a bad ass, but I don't see him beating Darchinyan either. He would do a lot better than Arce or Mijares. Mega fight though...

I see Montiel losing too but the fight would be cracking.

.. also Kotelnik vs Maidana from yesterday and that was a dope ass fight. Definitely worth the watch. Anyone down for a thread where we upload hard to find current fights so everyone can keep up with what's happening out the U.S.? Like I still haven't seen Barrera's recent fight because I couldn't find it in decent quality. I'll be down for it if others are ..

@naner, speaking of hard to find fights, do you have any Ali Funeka? I really haven't seen much of him at all and I'm curious to see what kind of fighter he is and wonder how he'll do against Nate Campbell. I know he destroyed Zahir Raheem so that must say something about him.

Oh shit, not looking good for Margarito!!! The verdict will be announced today, it's going on right now. I'll post as I learn more but from early reports IT"S NOT LOOKING GOOD!

Antonio Margarito's CSAC Hearing Begins With a Stunner

By Mark Vester

According to the Los Angeles Times, a big crowd gathered to view Antonio Margarito's hearing before the California State Athletic Commission, which takes place to hand out a ruling on the foreign substance that was found in his hand wraps before the January 24 bout with Shane Mosley at the Staples Center. Margarito is represented by well-known attorney Daniel Petrocelli.

Observers were stunned as the state attorney general started that Margarito should receive "the harshest penalty possible," including a license revocation, which would leave him on the sidelines for at least one year and would rule out a June 13 rematch with Miguel Cotto in New York.

More details to follow as they develop.
