D Hopkins started way too slow against Holt. I don't like the ego Holt has aquired, especially with his first title defense.

Vitali is going to smash Haye within 5. I think its all tentative still, nothing is set in stone yet.

Klitschko-Haye: Two Sides to the Restaurant Altercation

By Mark Vester

The near brawl that took place between WBC champion Vitali Klitschko and rival David Haye has the streets talking in several countries. Prior to the two fighters reaching an agreement for a June fight, they nearly exchanged punches in a packed restaurant during their meeting last weekend in Germany. Vitali lost his temper after Haye threw a magazine on the table that featured a photo of the talkative Brit holding a decaptitated head of younger brother Wladimir.

Klitschko’s manager Berndt Boente told The Sun that Vitali became "very angry" when he saw the photo and physically went after Haye. The two fighters began to wrestle and the wild scene ended when Vitali pushed Haye and the British fighter fell backwards.

“Vitali was very, very angry. He grabbed David and they then wrestled for a few seconds. He also gave David a push. He fell back and then tried to make a joke of it by doing some kind of dance — only then did it calm down,” Boente said.

Adam Booth, who mananges Haye, told The Guardian that Vitali grabbed the Hayemaker by the throat when he saw magazine photo, stunning both manangers and Haye.

“I was sitting with Vitali’s manager for negotiations to set up the fight for about 18 hours. At the end David and Vitali came to the restaurant to shake hands over the table. David tossed a copy of the magazine across the table with him dressed up as one of the characters from the ‘Reservoir Dogs’ film holding Wladimir’s head. When Vitali saw it he just lost the plot, jumped up and grabbed David by the scruff of the neck and started yelling at him that he would pay for it," Booth said.

Haye believes that he's finally broken the mental wills of the Klitschkos.

"I have already riled the boys. Wladimir's fight with Hasim Rahman was just boring. A Mike Tyson would have eaten him up in three rounds and spat him out. That is exactly what I am going to do with the lame Klitschkos," Haye said.

Vitali promised to do some serious damage when he steps in the ring with Haye.

"I will do that without emotion in the ring. I will reply for my brother and Haye must pay for this photo. You know lots of people said that they would knock my brother and me out. But it is well known what happened to them and the same would happen with Haye," Vitali said.

^ Read that HBO rejected the fight offer. I'm not sure if its 100% official, but I read that HBO and Showtime aren't going to be buying any 'mismatches' due to the economy.

Mayweather On Verge Of Return

By Conor Ward:

Rumours surrounding the possible return of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to the ring have gathered further momentum today, with reports that Mayweather’s camp have approached Ricky’s Hatton’s advisers with a view to a rematch with the ‘Hitman.'

Hatton’s lawyer Gareth Williams and his father Ray Hatton have confirmed that they have been sounded out by Mayweather’s representatives. As every British boxing fan knows only too well, Ricky suffered the first and only defeat of his career to date against Mayweather in December 2007 via a brutal tenth round TKO. As they also know, Hatton has bounced back well from that defeat, his impressive and comprehensive victory over fellow light-welterweight Paulie Malignaggi last month putting him right back in the shake-up at the top end of the world scene.

Of course Floyd and Ricky are just two of the characters in this plot, one which is thickening by the day. The fighter very much in the middle of it all is Filipino legend and current pound-for-pound king Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao. Since Pacquiao’s recent dismantling of Oscar de la Hoya at welterweight, everything has been pointing towards a summer 2009 showdown between Manny and Manchester’s Hatton. But five-weight world champ Mayweather – who announced his retirement from the sport in June of this year – remained as the elephant in the room when contemplating the prospect of a Pacquiao-Hatton match-up.

It’s all basically good news and exciting stuff thus far for fight fans. Even if Floyd stays home to count his mound of cash and doesn’t bother to darken the door of his Vegas gym any time soon, Pacquiao-Hatton is a genuine “dream match” (in contrast with the over-hyped Pacquiao-De la Hoya), a mouth-watering prospect, proper Grade A pound-for-pound entertainment. Most of us would probably settle for that as the biggest spectacle of ’09 – well, at least as a joint title-holder with another Cotto-Margarito slugfest.

But the prospect of Mayweather returning has thrown a few gallons of fuel onto my flames of anticipation. Throw the guy who is probably the most skilled and accomplished fighter of his generation (that’s the Pretty Boy) back into the mix, and my hands are rubbing themselves with a warm glee before I even asked them to.

While Floyd’s return is by no means an absolute certainty at this stage, it would seem unlikely that he could resist the lure of at least one mega-money match-up in the next twelve months and the chance to put himself back on that perch as the sport’s number one exponent.

Floyd spoke a lot about building his legacy over the last couple of years of his career and made no secret of his claim to being not only the greatest fighter of his own time but of all time. His critics have often questioned whether his achievements are sufficient to place him among boxing’s all-time elite. It’s my own view, for whatever it’s worth, he belongs well up there amongst the greatest ever seen – the Robinsons, Durans, Chavez’s and Leonards of this world – and any of those guys would certainly need to bring their ‘A game’ before they could begin to think about taking him down. A triumphant return for Floyd, especially against a fighter of Pacquiao’s quality and star status, can only enhance his legacy and win him yet more admiration which he surely craves.

Turning 32 in February, Floyd is still in his prime of health, having never suffered major punishment inside the ropes and with a good year off from the rigours of training behind him. What’s more, his last outing saw him right at the top of his game as he pulled just about every trick out of the locker in dismantling Hatton.

The presence of Mayweather Sr. in Hatton’s corner adds a delicious bit of extra spice to a Floyd-Hatton reunion, along of course with the prospect of the event taking place in front of a baying British public below Wembley’s glaring lights. Floyd-Pacquiao sells itself – the current pound-for-pound top dog against the returning former king.

My own “dream” scenario for ’09 would see Hatton face Pacquiao in the summer, and the winner to take on Floyd later in the year – that’s two blockbusters not to be missed. Floyd could choose to take a tune-up fight in the meantime, but with such little doubt over his own abilities to weigh on his mind, one gets the feeling that “Pretty Boy” would be happy enough to step right back in at the deep end. Virtually born with gloves already laced on his hands, it’s hard to believe it would take him long to get his bearings in those treacherous waters.

I don't know...as much as I'd love to see Floyd get his ass handed to him, he's definitely not going to do it against those who pose the biggest threats IMO:

Paul Williams, Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto

True welterweights, hungry and all respectively in or very near their peaks.

Although I think Manny would be a horrible matchup problem for Floyd, its still a lower risk fight than the 3 mentioned, IMO.

You are right why does he not go after the true welterweights. He has ducked all the real champions of the divisions he earned his title's from.

but I would love to see him fight Manny but wtf not another Hatton fight. Why because Sr. Mayweather is training him?

TARVER VS DAWSON PART 2 MARCH 14

Former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver has excelled in rematches during his career, going 3-0. After losing to Eric Harding, Roy Jones Jr. and Glen Johnson, Tarver bounced back to win the sequel.

Now, Tarver will see if he can stay perfect in a rematch with Chad Dawson when they meet again March 14 on HBO's "World Championship Boxing."

Although Tarver fought as well as he has in years, Dawson dominated him to claim a light heavyweight belt in a lopsided unanimous decision on Oct. 11 in Las Vegas in their long-awaited fight.

Dawson dropped Tarver in the 12th round and won 118-109, 117-110 and 117-110 on the official scorecards. But Tarver, who turned 40 last month, had a rematch clause in his contract and promoter Gary Shaw told ESPN.com Wednesday night that he has finalized the fight.

The bout will take place at a site to be determined, but Shaw said two of the venues in the running are the Foxwoods resort in Dawson's home state of Connecticut and The Palms resort in Las Vegas, which hosted the first fight.

Although Dawson (27-0, 17 KOs) was obligated to give Tarver (27-5, 19 KOs) a rematch, it didn't have to be immediate. However, without a bigger fight on the horizon, Shaw said they decided to do the rematch now.

"In discussing the options with Chad, we wanted to get this out of the way so if an opportunity came up to fight Bernard Hopkins or Joe Calzaghe, or somebody like that, we wouldn't have this fight with Tarver staring us in the face. So Chad said, 'You know what? Let me fight Tarver and get it over with. Let me knock him out this time and then I will have those options in front of me.'

"Chad wants to do this, so he is very up for the rematch, and I'm sure Antonio is happy we are living by our contract."

One of the intriguing aspects of the match is that it will take place on HBO, instead of Showtime, which has been associated with Dawson for years, nurturing him from a prospect on its "ShoBox: The New Generation" series to a world champion on its cornerstone series "Showtime Championship Boxing."

However, HBO, with a bigger budget, offered Dawson, a 26-year-old entering his prime, a two-fight deal that Showtime didn't match.

"[Showtime] had an opportunity to, let's say, re-sign Chad," Shaw said. "HBO has a big interest in Chad and when all the negotiations were over, it was best for Chad at this point to go to HBO. [Showtime boxing chief] Ken Hershman is ticked off at me and I know that. But at the end of the day I have to do what is best for my fighter."

Showtime spent 16 months and millions of dollars televising Dawson and Tarver fights against lesser opponents in an effort to get them into the ring against each other.

Shaw said that if Dawson defeats Tarver again, they are on "on the same page" as HBO.

"We'd like to fight Hopkins, Calzaghe, [super middleweight titleholder] Mikkel Kessler, Jermain Taylor, any of them," Shaw said. "Whoever wants to fight at 175 pounds, Chad will fight."

^ What the fuck ? I really don't see a point in a rematch, what a waste of time for Dawson.

He routed Tarver, the fight wasn't even close. I would have loved to see Chad step his competition up a little more.

Oh well, at least we'll get to see Tarver's wife some more.

yeah I hate rematch clauses especially when the fight was so one sided. However sometimes it works out for the loser, I mean Paul Williams pretty much got dominated by Quintana then knocked him the fought out so you never know.

I guess we wont be seeing a Hopkins vs Dawson or Dawson vs Calzaghe.

::::::::::::::::

I heard Paul Williams vs Winky Wright is in the works for early next year. The hold up right now is Williams is asking for a 50/50 split, which imo is hella fair since Winky hasn't fought since '07.

I agree, shit Winky has priced himself out of a lot of good fights.

That would be a good matchup. Would it be @ 54 or 60 though ? I always thought Winky was most effective @ 54.

Pacquiao-Hatton set for may 2 in Las Vegas!

Top Rank’s Bob Arum, undoubtedly the most astute promoter in the business, has a May 2 date in Las Vegas for a megabuck fight between the Philippines national treasure Manny Pacquiao and Britain ’s Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton.

However, Arum disclosed the Hatton fight will be on May 2 in Las Vegas saying “it will not be in Wembley, not because Manny would be afraid to fight in England but Wembley makes no sense because we’ll have to do it at five in the morning, outdoors, where there is a ninety percent chance of rain.”

It was clear that the pay-per-view potential was a major consideration in staging the fight in Las Vegas especially after the incredible numbers generated by the Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya “Dream Match” last December 6.

Arum revealed that the PPV numbers “are even better than they reported” and would be “a little over 1.4 million buys.”

GLEN JOHNSON IZ PISSED OFF ABOUT DAWSON VS TARVER 2

It takes a lot to get Glen Johnson angry, but when he heard that a March 14th rematch between Chad Dawson and Antonio Tarver had been finalized, he couldn’t hold back his feelings.

“This is a disgrace to the sport,” said Johnson, the former light heavyweight champ who is arguably the most avoided man in boxing. “Didn’t anyone watch the first fight? Do they think anything different will happen the second time around? HBO should have put this fight on a month earlier, so it could have been the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre Part Two.”

Johnson, who is currently awaiting a fight against the winner of the WBC light heavyweight title bout between Adrian Diaconu and Silvio Branco, has good reason to be angry, considering that he has already beaten Tarver and that most objective observers believe he beat Dawson as well in their controversial April 2008 match. But neither will fight him again, opting instead to rehash a non-competitive October bout that saw Dawson knock Tarver down on the way to a 118-109, 117-110, 117-110 unanimous decision win. Now they want to do it again, and on HBO.

“I thought HBO really meant business when they put together great, competitive fights like Margarito-Mosley Berto-Collazo and Marquez-Diaz for the early part of 2009, but then they agree to put on a rematch of a fight that wasn’t even competitive the first time,” said an incredulous Johnson. “It boggles my mind, especially when the only true rematch at 175 pounds is between Dawson and myself.” This type of worthless rematch robs the fans, and are bad for the sport. Whoever at HBO decided to purchase this fight, should be embarrassed” .

Needless to say, as far as Johnson is concerned, a championship reign that started off with bold words and so much promise for Chad Dawson has denigrated into a money grab that will see him continuing to fight easy fights while avoiding the true contenders of the division.

“I thought Chad Dawson was going to live up to his boasts, and be a true fighting champion,” said Johnson. “But it looks like I beat the fight out of him in April. Just a word of advice to Chad – you may make money now, but people will remember you later for ducking me. As for you Antonio, you’re a better actor than we all thought – you actually convinced HBO and Dawson to give you a rematch.”

^ Maaaaan. Glen's got every right to be pissed. He won that fight with Chad.

Daaaamn tho. I didn't know Tito got 14 Million for the Roy fight. Good deal.

I'm assuming that was for the one fight though right ? Because didn't Manny get a guaranteed 11 million dollar purse for the Oscar fight alone. He also fought Marquez in March, and Diaz in June, I'm sure he made 2 or 3 million each of those fights as well.

^^yeah the manny number will go up once they settle the PPV, which apparently has done more then the original 1.25 mil, they are saying over 1.4 mil now....so I'm guessing manny will have made over 20 mil for the year. And yeah Tito one single fight, 14 mil. The ppv I think did 600,000 or some shit like that.

And I scored Johnson over Dawson everytime I watched it. He definitely deserves a rematch.

I'm happy to see Guzman back in the ring. This is an eliminator fight so assuming he wins he only needs one or two more fights at the most to be right back at a title shot....

Joan Guzman Ready To Prove The Critics Wrong

Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) is in his native Dominican Republic to take on World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedelatin lightweight champion Ameth Diaz (25-7, 19 KOs) of Panama this Saturday, Dec. 20, from El Palacio de los Deportes in Guzman’s hometown of Santo Domingo.

The 12-round fight is promoted by Jay Boxing Promotions and will be Guzman’s first since outpointing Soto last November. The bout also serves as a WBA lightweight title eliminator.

The fight will be available on DIRECTV Channel 434 and DISH NETWORK Channel 844 (please check local listings for time in your area).

Quotes from Thursday’s press conference at El Palacio de los Deportes in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Here is what Guzman had to say:

JOAN GUZMAN

“I’m on pace to make weight and on Saturday night Diaz is going to be surprised at how good I really am. I’m here to make a statement to the world. Joan Guzman, the undefeated champion is back.

“I’m at 136 pounds right bow, one pound above the lightweight limit. This is a message to the boxing community that I am back.

“This fight is particularly special because it is in my hometown where my fans have always treated my well.

“I’m extremely happy with how training camp wrapped up. We went back to some of the old stuff that I used to do when I was younger. I felt like a kid again.

“I’m really excited to give my hometown fans a great show. I won here in 2006 against Antonio Davis and I’ll win again on Saturday.”
