Vitali Klitschko May Vacate WBC Title For David Haye Fight
By Mark Vester
David Haye is going to get his wish, if things go as planned, and fight a Klitschko in 2009. Haye has been chasing WBO/IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko for months. He surprised many when he revealed on BBC Radio that a deal was struck for a fight with WBC champ Vitali Klitschko, the older of the two brothers and seen as the stronger brother with the better chin.
"This is going to be the biggest fight since Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. I am not cherry-picking, I am going after the most dangerous fighter on the planet. We sat down with [the Klitschkos' company] K2 Promotions and thrashed out a deal in the early hours of this morning. We agreed terms for myself and Vitali. It's all done and dusted — just need to dot the i's and cross the t's," Haye said.
Many know that Vitali owes a mandatory title defense to Juan Carlos Gomez. Bernd Boente, Viatli's manager, said a fight with Haye will go forward with or without the backing of the WBC. If the WBC does not back their decision to fight Haye, they will move forward without the title belt.
"We are in a very good process and we foresee no problems. We have to still clarify matters but Haye's manager will be talking to Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal to see who can give us the best deal. Wembley is also a possibility but it is about who comes up with the best price," Boente said to The Guardian .
"We are absolutely confident this is a fight that the whole of Germany and Britain will want to see. But it is also one which will sell across the world. It is a huge fight which, with the exception of one between Wladimir and Vitali — which will never happen — is the best heavyweight fight that can be made right now."
"I think that this fight is bigger than the belt and, if the WBC does not see sense, then we would go ahead with it without the WBC belt."
Lennox Lewis To Join Team Haye To Beat Vitali Klitschko
By Mark Vester
According to David Haye, former undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis is coming on board as an advisor during his training camp for the June clash with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. The news broke on Sunday that Haye and Klitschko sat down in Germany and reached an agreement on the terms for their fight. Lewis fought Vitali Klitschko in 2003, stopping him after six rounds when the ring doctor felt that Vitali's facial cuts were too severe to allow him to continue. There was never a rematch, Lewis retired a few months later.
"I'm really good friends with Lennox. "He wasn't impressed with Wladimir's performance against Hasim Rahman (a seventh-round stoppage on Saturday) either and thinks I would knock him out. Lennox has worked with me in the gym before, he's seen me sparring, he knows I'm the real deal. I'll definitely bring him on board in an advisory role," Haye told Sportinglife .
"He's fought Vitali, he knows what works and what doesn't and if there's anyone to give me advice about strategy, it's Lennox. Maybe I'll go to the States where he is based. I've got six months, a long build-up to the fight, so why not?"
Many expected Haye to fight younger brother Wladimir, holder of the WBO/IBF titles, but the British talker claims that after Vitali watched him break apart Monte Barrett a few weeks ago - he didn't want his younger brother involved.
"It was always going to be Wladimir until my fight with Barrett. But Vitali was ringside for my victory over Barrett and I think he saw something in me that he doesn't want his brother getting involved in, someone like me, who isn't afraid of getting jabbed. I am someone who wants to go out there throwing bombs and my bombs on Wladimir's chin would equal a knockout. Vitali knows he has got a lot better chin (than Wladimir). He's a lot sturdier and stronger, so I think he made a family decision and put himself in the firing line," Haye said.
Chris Arreola Eyes Wladimir Klitschko Showdown in 09
By Brent Matteo Alderson
There are initial-plans in place for heavyweight slugger Chris Arreola to face WBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in the summer. At the conclusion of Toney-Oquendo, Dan Goosen commented, “If you sat us all down here, manager, trainer, fighter, we’d all say Klitschko makes a lot of sense right now if the fight can be made under reasonable terms. We’ve said all along that 2009 was going to be Cristobal’s year and we haven’t swayed from that. We’re ready and boxing needs a tornado like Chris.”
Later on in the night, BoxingScene.com accompanied Arreola and his team to the Chandelier Bar inside the Morongo Casino. Arreola was with some friends, his trainer Henry Ramirez, and Wes Crockett, the Al Haymon associate who discovered him when he was fighting on club shows.
Arreola was in good spirits throughout the evening and happy about the early Christmas gift he bought for himself with the reported $250,000 dollar payday he earned for the Walker bout, “I bought a fully loaded Ford F-150. It’s beautiful; it’s raised with 22 inch rims. I went to the dealer and the guy treated me different. He was like, do you want to trade in your other two cars for a new F-150 and I was like, no, I want to buy it straight out and he looked at me as though I wasn’t going to be able to do it until some other salesmen came up and told who I was and then he was like, can I get you anything else.”
Wes Crockett, a kind of talent-scout who initially brought Paul Williams and Arreola to Al Haymon’s attention, came to the Toney fight with a large group that included former USC football standout Mike Williams and a number of other close friends. Mike Williams and Arreola actually seemed to hit it off as the former college football star joked with Chris, “They say you’re going to be the first Mexican heavyweight champion, but with that big-ass nose, you might be black!”
Later on in the night BoxingScene was involved in a round-table discussion with Mr. Crockett and he stated, “I’ve been fighting since I was five years old, and I knew when I saw Chris and Paul [Williams] that they were going to be champions, they both had the talent and they are both natural-born fighters, I could see it in their eyes. It’s done, Chris is fighting Klitschko on May 12 at the Staples Center, and it’s a done deal.”
BoxingScene.com was astonished by the information and since it was received in a socially-intimate environment, Crockett was asked if the information could be reported and he responded, “I don’t give a f-ck, write what you want.”
A few moments later, Henry Ramirez had a smile on his face that was either from the sweet taste of corona or the thought of Arreola fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world and he proudly stated with a grin, “We are coming after Klitschko; we’re taking the fight to him!”
