Pavlik: "What Happens When Hopkins Gets Hit Flush?"

By Mark Vester

WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik wants to become the first man to knock Bernard Hopkins out when the two fighters clash at the catch-weight of 170-pounds, on October 18 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. He says a knockout of Hopkins will make for a major statement.

Hopkins is a defensive fighter, but Pavlik says the veteran fighters will have to open up at certain points during the fight.

“That would be ... one of the biggest statements of the last 40 years in boxing,” Pavlik was quoted as saying by writer Joe Scalzo. “The question is, What happens when he gets hit flush? Eventually his defense is going to lapse a few times. I have to take advantage of that. “[The weight], it’s an advantage to me. I can eat more, so I’ll have more energy and more snap on my punches. I walk around at 175-176, so I don’t have to kill myself to make weight. I’ll be ready to go.

Hopkins has been under fire by the media, with many of them calling him old, and way beyond is prime. Hopkins insists that he's still the same fighter that beat Felix Trinidad in 2001, and plans to prove it in the ring.

“An offensive guy and a defensive veteran — that’s a perfect match,” Hopkins said. “Can Bernard Hopkins derail the Mack truck? I’m going to flatten his tires, slow it up and then it will conk out. A lot of people are concerned about me. I will be OK. I’m not a fool. I’m a thinker. I’m a guy who likes to take big challenges.I will beat [Pavlik] impressively and show the world Bernard Hopkins is a great champion.”

IF YOU'RE GOING TO WATCH THE SHOWTIME BROADCAST TONIGHT AND DON'T WANT TO THE KLITSCHKO/PETER FIGHT SPOILED STOP READING THIS POST

Vitali Klitschko came out off a close to 4 year layoff and completely bitch beat Samuel Peter. Peter didn't win close to a round IMO and quit on his stool at the end of the 8th round (mostly due to shitty open scoring). I highly doubt that Peter would've quit if they didn't have open scoring. I don't see any benefit of open scoring, it fucks up fights big time IMO. It can cause a guy to quit on his stool like in this case or if someone knows they won enough won to win the fight they can coast the remainder of the fight.

Yep, Dawson looked awesome on Saturday, he made Tarver look like absolute shit, which he might be (age finally caught up to him I think). Almost as bad as his loss against Bernard Hopkins. I think this clearly shows Dawson is #1 at Light Heavy (fuck Calzaghe cuz he aint fighting anyone else besides Roy Jones).

And I didn't see the Klitschko fight but I read he dominated Peter. Pretty impressive after not fighting for almost four years. I like Vitali, his brother is a douchebag though. I WISH they would fight eachother, it would be the only big Heavyweight fight in a very long time and would be a worthy PPV, probably would sell very well too (over 500,000 for sure). Plus it would be for unification. Unfortunately I doubt it will ever happen. Vitali vs Valuev could happen

@ 2-0 .. Grab the Klitschko/Peter fight asap. It wasn't the greatest of fights but it was impressive as hell watching someone who couldn't make it through training camp and coming off close to a 4 year layoff completely dominate the #2 HW.

.. about to watch the Solis fight now. If anyone wants to peep let me know and I'll put it up. It's a 1.28GB file so it'll take me a minute to up.

De La Hoya Will Brutally Stop Pacquiao, Says Schaefer

By Mark Vester

Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotions CEO, believes that Oscar De La Hoya will stop Manny Pacquiao in brutal fashion when the two fighters meet on December 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao, the current WBC lightweight champion, will move up by two weight divisions to 147-pounds to face De La Hoya. After Pacquiao, Schaefer says De La Hoya will have one or two more fights.

"Oscar's going to see how he feels after this fight," Schaefer told Setanta Sports. "Assuming everything goes well and he feels good then I think he is going to have maybe one or two fights. I actually think he will knock him out in a rather brutal fashion."

The first post-Pacquiao fight with come against Ricky Hatton, who De La Hoya promotes. Schaefer would like the fight to take place at Wembley Stadium. He already spoke with Ray Hatton about the fight.

"Assuming that Ricky Hatton beats Paulie Malignaggi [on Nov. 22], which will be no easy fight, then I think a Hatton-De La Hoya showdown is still a very real possibility and I have already had some conversations with Ray Hatton about that match. Wembley Stadium would be the dream location," Schaefer said

Hard Times Force Holyfield To Seek a Valuev Bout

By Mark Vester

Most were shaking their heads last week when former four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, 46, approached Sauerland Event's American agent, trying to secure a a fight with seven-foot, 300-pound WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev. The purse for the fight was going to be Holyfield's lowest in many years.

It appears that Holyfield is still facing hard times with his finances. Since the start of the year, Holyfield was facing all kinds of debt related issues, with defaulted loans, back child support and missed payments for his home.

According to a recent report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Holyfield has not complied with a September 1 deadline, set by way of a court order, that directed him to meet his child support responsibilities for his 11-year-old son, one of his 11 children.

Holyfield has to appear in court on October 22 to answer why he never complied with the court order that gave him until the September 1 to make good on the outstanding money. Holyfield has not paid the legal fees of his son's mother, or his child's private school tuition, which forced the mother to send her son to public school. Holyfield is to provide $3,000 per month in child support for his son, and last made a $9,000 payment in July.

The article says that Holyfield has grossed more than $248 million over his career in purses, but he took some heavy monetary hits with his two previous divorces, several failed business ventures and his child support payments, for 9 of the 11 kids, which are estimated to run as high as $500,000 annually. Holyfield has two kids with his third wife.

Oscar De La Hoya To Use Daniel Zaragoza For Pacquiao

By Mark Vester

Oscar De La Hoya is going all-out to prepare for his December 6th bout with WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao. According to Mexico insider Ernesto Castellanos, De La Hoya will use Mexican legend Daniel Zaragoza to put together a strategy for Pacquiao.

Zaragoza, a southpaw like Pacquiao, was a former WBC bantamweight champion and a three-time WBC super bantamweight champion. He retired in 1997 after being stopped by an up and coming fighter who ultimately become a Mexican legend himself, Erik Morales.

Zaragoza will join De La Hoya in at his training camp in Big Bear, California, along with De La Hoya's new trainer, Ignacio Beristáin, nutritionist Roberto Garcia, brother Joel De La Hoya Jr. and assistant trainer Joe Chavez. De La Hoya has not trained in Big Bear since his 2001 bout with Arturo Gatti. Over the last few years, De La Hoya has trained in Puerto Rico. Gatti was De La Hoya's last bout at 147-pounds, and the fight with Pacquiao is also scheduled to take place at the welterweight limit

David Haye Targets Vitali, Wants Him After Wladimir

By Mark Vester

Former undisputed cruiserweight champion David Haye is not impressed with Vitali Klitschko's one-sided beating of Samuel Peter to capture the WBC heavyweight title. Klitschko returned after almost four-years to capture the title he last held before retiring.

Haye returns to heavyweight on November 15, taking on Monte Barrett at the O2 Arena in London. For months, Haye has called out Wladimir Klitschko and wants the fight to take place in the early part of the new year. Now he wants older brother Vitali, right after the bout with Wladimir. He says that his speed and boxing style will be too much for either brother to handle.

“Give me Wladimir first, then I’ll take on the older brother. Neither of them has the speed I can show them, and they are both vulnerable,” Haye told Telegraph Sport

Enzo Calzaghe: "Klitschko, Worst Champion I've Ever Seen"

By Mark Vester

Enzo Calzaghe, trainer of Joe Calzaghe and other UK fighters, has taken a hefty swing at WBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, calling him the worst heavyweight champion that he ever saw. He says that David Haye beating Klitschko would not be an impressive accomplishment. And went as far as to say that he could beef up his son Joe, who would probably beat Klitschko.

"Anyone can be successful at heavyweight right now. I could fatten up Joe to 17 and a half stone and he would win the title. Wladimir Klitschko is the worst heavyweight champion I have seen in my life. He's worse than Primo Carnera. I don't know him personally but as a boxer he does nothing for me at all," Calzaghe told The Ring.

He doesn't believe that Haye, who knocked out Calzaghe fighter Enzo Maccarinelli in the eary part of year, will be a force at heavyweight, but also feels that it's so bad at the weight that anything is possble.

"Haye has not convinced me however. He didn't spark out Enzo, so where are the massive punches going to come from? There is a lot of dead squid in the heavyweight division, so maybe he can be competitive, but he isn't going to be the saviour of the heavyweight division, not in my opinion," Calzaghe said
