Joey Gilbert vs. Jesse Brinkley Set For January 30

It’s a bout that has to happen. Everywhere Jesse goes in Reno, fans always ask when he’s going to shut up Joey. They’ve never gotten along and it’s really turned into a bitter grudge match. Come January 30th fans are going to see a real war between these two when they finally settle things.” said Terry Lane.

Added Chet Koerner, “This is a terrific fight for boxing fans especially in the state of Nevada. I’ve worked with Joey for a long time and he’s always wanted to fight Brinkley in a major bout. Joey feels that Jesse double crossed him on The Contender Season 1 and they’ve never gotten a chance to fight each other.

We’re talking to casinos and other sites in Nevada as well as television networks and we hope to have final details on the location, advance ticket sales and the broadcast in the very near future. It’s a huge fight for fans of both guys and we want to make this a special event for them.”

Since his controversial loss to Peter Manfredo Jr. on The Contender, Gilbert, 15-1 (11KO’s) has run off a six bout winning streak culminating in a tenth round stoppage of unbeaten Juan Astorga on May 12, 2007 at the Reno Events Center. He followed that with a first round knockout of Charles Howe on September 21st, a result later changed to a no contest.

“I made a costly mistake leading up to the Howe fight and paid dearly for it. Boxing fans deserve better and against Brinkley I’m looking to make amends” said Gilbert.

Brinkley, 31-5 (21KO’s) is riding a five bout winning streak, most recently dominating Jason Naugler, sweeping all twelve rounds on June 13th in Reno. Prior to that he won the vacant WBC USNBC title from Otis Griffin on February 22nd, knocking him out in the 11th round.

Said Brinkley, “It’s time to settle this. He’s been running his mouth for years demeaning me. On January 30th I’m going to finish him and settle this once and for all.”

Reno, Nevada based “Let’s Get It On” Promotions was founded in 2000 by legendary boxing referee Mills Lane. In early 2005 he was joined by sons Terry and Tommy in the operations of the company. Along with Jesse Brinkley, "Let’s Get It On" Promotions also promotes highly regarded brothers Tyler and Derek Hinkey. They have consistently promoted world class boxing events in northern Nevada.

Winky Wright-Arthur Abraham Still Tentative For 1/24

BoxingScene.com was advised by a source close to the camp of Winky Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs), that IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs) is still the frontrunner to become Wright's first opponent since a decision loss to Bernard Hopkins [catch-weight of 170-pounds] in July of 2007. The fight would take place on January 24 on HBO.

Abraham became ill last Saturday and was forced to postpone his mandatory defense against Raul Marquez to November 8. Considering the new November date and the upcoming December holidays, there is some concern from Wright's camp that a fight with Abraham will not happen. According to the last conversation that was held with HBO, the network was still pushing for Wright to fight Abraham. At the present, the network's position has not changed.

Other factors can come into play to prevent a Wright-Abraham encounter. Like Abraham's desire to fight Kelly Pavlik in early 2009. On the flipside of that, Pavlik is hoping to fight the winner of Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones Jr. in early 2009.

It was also revealed to me that Wright would like to take a tuneup fight on November 29 in Puerto Rico, co-promoting the event with his own company, Winky Promotions, and having Miguel Cotto as the other co-promoter [Miguel Cotto Promotions]. A tuneup fight may not become a reality due to a clause in Wright's HBO contract for the January TV date. The clause blocks him from participating in any fight 90-days prior to HBO date.

Felix Trinidad: "Juanma Could Become My Successor"

Juan Manuel Lopez's 47-second demolition of Cesar Figueroa, last week in Puerto Rico, left such an impression on Felix Trinidad, that the former three-division champion called Lopez his possible successor, becoming the next icon of Puerto Rico. Trinidad says the unbeaten WBO super bantamweight champ reminded him of himself when he was coming up in the welterweight ranks.

"He reminds me a lot of myself. When I used to throw the straight punch and then the hook and the punches sent them to the canvas," Trinidad said to Primera Hora.

"I think that he will be the successor of Tito Trinidad if he keeps going in this direction. When I won the title from Maurice Blocker, I also had my first defense in Puerto Rico and I knocked out Luis Garcia in the first-round. Juanma did exactly the same. The first defense of his title won by knockout in the first-round. I expect for him to do that in many defenses."

Lopez was very humble when interviewed by the paper, and was not quick to label himself as the best fighter in the country.

"Puerto Rico has a lot of good fighters. I believe that I am one of the most charismatic. I won't dare call myself the new face of boxing [in Puerto Rico] because there are a lot of good fighters here. The fact that Miguel Cotto lost does not signify that he is not a great champion and Ivan Calderon is a great champion with 14 defenses of the title."

Forrest Has a Short Deadline To Accept Sergio Martinez

BoxingScene.com was informed that WBC junior middleweight champion Vernon Forrest (41-3, 29KOs) has until October 14 to make a decision as to whether or not he will fight mandatory/interim-champion Sergio Martinez (44-1, 24KOs). Martinez accepted a step-aside deal for the WBC title to be at stake when Forrest went forward with the Sergio Mora rematch.

Forrest's rematch with Mora took place on September 13, and he dominated the action to reclaim the title. As part of the step-aside agreement with Martinez, Forrest has ten-days from Martinez's fight with Alex Bunema [Oct. 4] to accept the title defense.

Martinez would not be happy if Forrest vacated the title to look for another fight. He would much rather win the belt from the champion. If Forrest declines to make the mandatory defense, Martinez would be elevated to the status of full champion.

"I don't want to win the title like that. I want to win the title by fighting the champion. I don't want this to be like Joel Julio, who turned down an HBO fight with me to go fight in Germany for less money and no [American] television," Martinez said. "Forrest has to make a decision. He has to sh*t or get off the pot."

De La Hoya, Hatton Co-Promotion Deal in The Works

According to a report in Telegraph Sport, Ricky Hatton is in the process of setting up a joint venture with Oscar De la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions to develop British fighters. Hatton's vision is to turn his own promotional company, Punch Promotions, into Uk arm of Golden Boy. He wants to sign and develop UK-based talent, and then use his connection with Golden Boy to further develop them in the United States.

The ironic thing is that Hatton, promoted by Golden Boy, could end fighting his business partner and promoter, De La Hoya, at some point in 2009. Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy, has already said that if Hatton beats Paulie Malignaggi on Nov. 22 and De La Hoya rolls past Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6, the two fighters are likely to fight each other.

“These are exciting times. We’re setting up a stand-alone company which will be a joint enterprise, and we’ll look to sign the best of British talent. We’ve already spoken to several of the British fighters who went to the Olympic Games, and we’ll reveal names once we’ve sat down and signed things properly," Gareth Williams, Hatton’s lawyer, told the paper.

“Some of the biggest fights in the world are being brokered by Golden Boy at the moment, and with their company wishing to have a European branch, we see ourselves as a ‘good fit’ with them. We’re looking at the highest level of boxing promotion possible.”

Hatton: "Mayweather Gave Me a New Lease on Life"

Ricky Hatton is overjoyed with his new trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr. He says that Mayweather has given him a new lease on life. Hatton recently split with trainer Billy Graham after an eleven-year relationship, but admits that he should have split with Graham a lot sooner. Mayweather is currently training Hatton in the UK. The two of them will arrive in Las Vegas on October 16, and finish camp for the November 22 bout with Paulie Malignaggi.

"Floyd has come in and given me a new lease of life, said Hatton to The Guardian. "He's slowed me down and given me a more subtle approach. I was up at 6am this morning, Floyd came to my house and I ran five miles around Gee Cross in Hyde with dumb bells in my hands. Floyd was side by side with me all the way - in a Range Rover I might add - saying, 'Come on, jab, jab, step off, one-two!'.

"It was hard because it's very hilly where I live but because it was new I got a buzz from it. As soon as we got back to my house he jumped out the car and we did a little bit of sparring. I've got to get used to him calling the shots and the different combinations, plus I need to get to know him as a person and as a coach."

Some members of the UK media have attacked Hatton over his decision to fire Graham. The Manchester fighter stood by his decision and went into detail on why he set out to hire a new trainer.

"Billy thought he could continue training me but I had to be man enough to say no because it just wasn't possible. A lot of the lads have left his gym - including our Matthew (Hatton's brother) - because of Billy's injuries," Hatton said. "There was only me left and he couldn't even do that in the end. It was the toughest decision of my life to leave Billy but it was the best one. They were putting needles in his hands to numb the pain so he could take a training session."

"When I hit him he would say, 'You're hitting too hard', but in my mind I was thinking, Well you don't know because you can't feel your hands'. He was deluding himself and didn't want to admit to himself that the time had come to finish. Everyone was telling me to leave him earlier and I think it's clear because, slowly but surely, everyone else left him."

"I couldn't do it because of how I had such a close relationship with him but when Matthew left I knew I had to be a man and leave as well."

Hatton still hopes that his association with Floyd Sr., may prompt Floyd Mayweather Jr. to come out of retirement for a rematch. Mayweather Jr. knocked Hatton out last December.

"For now I just need to beat Malignaggi and then hopefully get a big opponent in my next fight, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Floyd Jr. coming out of retirement at some point," Hatton said.

Deandre Latimore vs Sammy Sparkman on For November 7

The 23 year old Latimore, 19-1-0 (16KO’s) is thrilled to be fighting back in St. Louis. “I’ve been away training here in Las Vegas for most of this year and my last fight was the knockout of Powell in New York City so it’s been a while since I’ve been home. I’m looking forward to putting on a great performance in front of the hometown crowd.”

In Latimore’s last bout he knocked out Sechew Powell in the seventh round in a bout broadcast on ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Fights on June 11th. Prior to that he won a unanimous decision over previously undefeated Durrell Richardson at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, Missouri on December 6, 2007 for the WBC USNBC junior middleweight title.

Latimore is currently world ranked #5 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

Sparkman, 20-17-1 (9KO’s), is coming off a hard fought ten round decision loss to then undefeated prospect Pawel Wolak in Warsaw, Poland last December. The native of Columbia, Tennessee has fought numerous future world champions throughout his eleven year career including Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams, Cory Spinks, Andre Berto and Miguel Angel Rodriguez.

Said Giuliano, “Sparkman’s got a lot more experience so it’s a tough fight. I know that Deandre’s been training diligently in Las Vegas with Kenny Adams and it’s important for him to stay focused in this type of homecoming fight.”

About Latimore’s future plans, Giuliano said, “Certainly we’d like to fight for a world title in the near future and hopefully after this fight we can announce some distinct plans moving in that direction.”

Latimore is given the “New Faces” treatment by Ring Magazine in the October 2008 issue sporting boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao on the cover. He is managed by Jerry Giuliano of Sandman Boxing Management LLC and promoted by Steve Smith of Rumble Time Promotions in St. Louis.

Delvin Rodriguez in Line for Hlatshwayo, Paul Williams

Welterweight contender Delvin Rodriguez has two opportunities in front of him. He's been offered the chance to face WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams on November 29 on HBO. He also has a fight scheduled against Isaac Hlatshwayo on November 17 at Emperors Palace in South Africa.

The fight with Hlatshwayo was announced over the weekend by South African promoter Rodney Berman, who also says the match is officially an IBF eliminator. And while the fight was announced overseas as going forward, BoxingScene.com has learned the fight with Hlatshwayo is not a done deal and the possible fight with Williams is still being worked on.

Peter snatches belt from Klitschko, storms offstage before fight

BERLIN -- Samuel Peter ripped the WBC belt from Vitali Klitschko's hands and stormed off the stage Monday at a news conference to promote their heavyweight title fight.

The two fighters -- both called champions by the WBC -- were engaged in the routine pre-fight stare-down with both holding the belt. Peter, urged by trainer Stacy McKinley, then snatched it from Klitschko's grasp. Klitschko looked surprised, then bemused.

"What happens here is a show," said Klitschko, who fights Peter on Saturday at O2 World Arena. "The real fight is in the ring."

Peter was reportedly angry that the conference was conducted mostly in German -- which Klitschko, a Ukrainian, speaks fluently -- and responded by answering the few English questions posed to him in his native Nigerian tongue.

Peter's American promoter, Dino Duva, didn't hide his displeasure about being in Europe.

"I'm a little upset that everyone is speaking in German," Duva said. "I didn't want to fight in Germany. But [German broadcaster] RTL paid the most money and that's why we're here -- I make no bones about it."

The 37-year-old Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs) has been out of the ring since an eighth-round win over Danny Williams on Dec. 11, 2004. He lost the WBC belt in 2005 after withdrawing from a title bout because of a torn right knee ligament.

The WBC made him "champion emeritus." But Klitschko, a powerful but injury-prone puncher, said he's ready to reclaim the title outright and quell any doubts about his age and health.

"I know people thought I would get injured in training," Klitschko said. "No. I'm healthy. I'm ready to fight."

The 27-year-old Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) took the WBC interim title by easily beating Jameel McCline on points in September 2007. During that bout, McCline dropped Peter to the canvas with a sharp uppercut in the second round.

"All the great heavyweight fighters have been knocked down," McKinley said. "What's important is that you get up again."

Earlier this year, Peter took care of Oleg Maskaev with a devastating sixth-round knockout in a Cancun bullfighting ring, a fight that strengthened his grip on the WBC belt.

After that victory, Peter called for -- but didn't receive -- a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali's younger brother and the holder of the IBF and WBO heavyweight belts. It was the younger Klitschko who dealt Peter his only loss.

Juan Manuel Lopez Plans To Rise Until 135-Pounds

WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (23-0, 21KOs) is starting to make a lot of noise in the sport. After nine knockouts coming within the first-round, which include his last to fights, people are starting to call him the new "Hands of Stone," but Lopez, a very humble fighter, says that a lot of fighters hit hard.

"I have nine knockouts in the first round, but that's not going to happen every day. The last two surprised me. I don't go in there thinking that kind of result in my head. Tito Trinidad hits just as hard. Wilfredo Gomez too, and Mike Tyson. There are a lot of boxers who hit very hard. I work very hard and therefore I'm getting the fruits of my labor," Lopez told Primera Hora.

Lopez's team is now in talks to place him on the undercard to Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao on December 6 in Las Vegas. A deal has not been reached but talks are ongoing.

"I don't know who were are going to fight or the amount of money I'll get. We have to come to an agreement, then an opponent has to agree [to fight me] and then the money has to right for the fight," Lopez said.

In the future, Lopez plans to jump up to 126-pounds, then 130 and one final stop at 135.

"Eventually I'm going to move up to 126-pounds, but probably not until 2010. We have a goal and that is to continue scaling weight divisions, until 135-pounds, to be the Puerto Rican who earned the most titles. I want that that be my legacy. I've been made to understand that Israel Vazquez who to move up to 126. In the future we are going to find in. I have a lot of faith that a fight with him is going to happen," Lopez said.

Calderon, Bonilla Offer Opinions on Felix Trinidad's Return

Felix "Tito" Trinidad, 35, is still planning a return to the ring. After winning titles at 147, 154 and 160-pounds, two retirements and three bad defeats, the Puerto Rican icon wants to give it one last run in 2009. He last fought in January, losing a twleve-round decision to Roy Jones Jr. at the catch-weight of 170-pounds. It was Trinidad's first fight in almost three-years.

Undefeated WBO junior flyweight champion Ivan Calderon says Trinidad needs to switch-up his style a little bit. He feels that Trinidad, in every post-retirement ring return, continues to use the same exact style in every fight and it's become easy to figure him out in fights.

"Tito is already at a point in his career where fighters have already learned everything they are going to learn. Maybe another person can come in and adds something new, something that he's missing or help improve something else," Calderon told El Nuevo Dia. "For a veteran fighter, it's hard to adapt to a new rhythm and a new style. I'm not saying he should change his corner, but add someone to the corner."

Jose Bonilla, trainer of Carlos Quintana and several others, told the paper that Trinidad is not too old to return to the ring and go on a successful run.

"The age should not be a problem [to have a successful run], since over there you have (Shane) Mosley, (Bernard) Hopkins and others who are older than Tito. It's difficult to change your style after all this time, but he continues to have career possibilities because of that spark, the eye of the tiger, they are still there," Bonilla said. "The last thing to go is your punch, and the first thing to go is your reflexes, but Tito has always been a responsible athlete and dedicated, who takes care of himself I am sure that his dad is not going to let him fight unless he's not in the best condition possible."

Nikolai Valuev vs. Evander Holyfield Close For 12/20

I swear, I'm not making this up. Former four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (42-9-2, 27 KOs) has accepted an offer to fight seven-foot Nikolai Valuev (49-1, 34 KOs), the WBA champion, on December 20 with the fight taking place in either Germany or Switzerland.

Holyfield, turning 46 on Oct. 19, told boxing scribe Dan Rafael that his attorney is reviewing the fight contract from Sauerland Event, who promote Valuev.

"It's solid. They asked if I will take the fight for the offer they made and if everything is straight up, I will take that fight," Holyfield said. "My lawyer is looking at it. They said I was too old when I was 34 and was getting ready to fight Mike Tyson for the first time."

"There's nothing new with what people say. I have a desire and I am the one who got to train and I am willing to make the sacrifices necessary to be the best. Just imagine a 46-year-old guy being heavyweight champ of the world?"
