let me ask this question... would you rather have people illegally download your music and bump your shit? or not bump it at all?

a lot of the time I'll download shit only because I can get it for free... meaning if I HAD to pay for it, I wouldn't, because it's not worth my money... so should I download it, listen to it, which could potentially get you more exposure, or not listen to it at all?

I think artist also need to realize that going to a record store and purchasing an album for $15 is a completely outdated concept... I'm sorry but it is

just like buying DVDs... most people would rather just stream Netflix or some shit

you have to evolve with the technology, because the technology is bigger than your right now, and it's only gonna grow. There are tons of free services available, and companies still manage to make money form them... Google, Twitter, Facebook, Skype, all the podcasts out there... shit, look at the amount of free mobile apps available... you don't think they invest time, money, and resources in developing those free aplications? of course they do... as an BUSINESS you need to evolve with the technology and think outside the box... come up with ways to make money... tell your fans you'll offer a free download on your website, host some ad space and get as many hits as you can... something like that... but think of other ways to make money

I'd advise you to spend time working on your own business plan, rather than shutting down these little blogger websites... you're not gonna change SHIT by doing that... 2 sites will pop up to replace the one you shut down... it's inevitable

and if you do want people to purchase your album when they can easily get ir for free... they're gonna need more of an incentive than simply "supporting the artist." Especially when that same artist might brag about how much money he has... so let's say I'm struggling to pay my phone bill and my rent... I'm supposed to bay YOU $15 of my money, so I can hear you talk about your new rims, jewlery, cars, and how much you make it rain (btw I'm not referring to specifically Indecent... and I know not all artists talk about that shit) fuck that!

also, rappers are constantly talking about how they do shit that is illegal and unethical in order to get ahead in life... (selling drugs, prostitution, robbing people, etc....) kind of like someone illegally downloading music so they can save money... right? I think rappers need to realize the message in their music is quite contradictory to the message they try to portray to their fan base when it comes to downloading their music for free. It's OK for you to sell crack to someone's Mom, but it's not OK for me to sell a bootlegg copy of your album?

I dunno... my point is...you really can't be mad at fans if they download your music. I understand the frustration, but you have to look at both sides of the fence. Evolve with the times because you are not going to stop it from happening.

My $0.02

dont get me wrong..im with the times. I understand the game, but does that mean I sit back and let it happen ? Of course we cant shut it all down. I know its all about marketing, live performances, ect ect and already apply that...im a producer so really Im not too effected financially because I got a clientel that need my services...as for artist, i feel bad because on this whole issue because there the ones who get the short end of the stick. Thats why I can afford to give out free beats, albums, BBQ, ect ect...because Im able to capitalize off of the game....but it dont excuse the fact that these so called fans (majority) support these illeagal download sites with the excuse that they just want to preview it first...i wonder what the real percentage is when it comes to people downloading and KEEPING the music they downloaded and not even buy a T-Shirt, go to a show, or buy a cd of that artist ? Feel me.

You would not be singing that tune if you published your music and registered it for royalties. So basically your cashed out from the start. If you gave away a free beat and that artist goes on & makes millions off it, you just gave away a whole lot of money. You might as well, put it up for free download. Free downloads hurt the artist, producer, photographer etc. it trickles down to the lowest one on the totem pole. They all get a percentage from royalties.

We can all complain about downloading, but most independent artist are already losing money from the start when they don't register and own their publishings.

Royalties are the longevity of every artist. I really don't understand how a lot of independent artist think that they need to sell a certain amount of units to get rich. If that's to happen, the game is to stay rich ya feel me? That's where royalties come into play.

Beats, verses etc. should always have some sort of ties to it, but if the paperwork isn't done correctly, you might as well not even worry about free downloads, because you started to lose money the moment you started recording the music.

I still retain all my rights for publishing....If a song has potential to go big from the jump then I go to ascap and register the song. Anything I send to DJ's, Radio stations, or is being performed at clubs that are honored by asap ect ect I make sure the song is registered (and tagged correctly). Bro lol I know what your getting at and my avenues are covered as far as what you speak. Ive had my publishing threw asacp since 2004 by 2005 I understood it and was registering works. If a artist makes millions off a free beat of mine guess what, i retain my publishing and i get a piece of the cake....and for the artist to make millions or try to start to he has to contact me anyways for his publishing submission to be correct and valid.

That's good to hear. The unfortunate reality is, not many independent artist handle their biz like they should.

back when i was in high school and a new album came out some people would buy the new album and dubb it on a cassette tape for their homies and a few people were already burning cd's around 1998, it's pretty much the same thing as downloading......and now all the artist are complaining about too many people downloading and they aint gettin paid, well maybe they should make good music and they could get more sells.

downloading mp3's is pretty much the same as dubbing tapes like they did in the 80's & 90's.
