It's pretty simple once you figure out how it works.

Quick easy example:

You select a random word, "Jello". You score a 4 likeliness. Next word the line down is "Hello" followed by the word "Quack" a line after that. Knowing that you scored a 4 with "Jello" you know your answer is "hello".

If you select a random word, let's say its "Hater" and it has two likeliness, that means two of those letters are not only the same but in the exact correct location. So just go down the list and compare every word to "Hater", you rule out every word that doesn't have at least two letters exactly in the same position as "hater", so you are almost always left with just one or two choices. Let's say you see another word, "taser" and you select that and still, it's only 2 likeness. So now you have a lot to work with. Another line down you see "Later" and another is "boner". You know its not "later" because the first two words you selected only have two letters in the same spot and process of elimination so knowing that the answer is "boner".

Another trick is you see a lot of junk characters between words, like [{<>|\[]{}>)>[ . This is just a trick and not necessary but it can make it easier and reset your tries.

If you ever see closed brackets, like this [ ] or ( ) or < > you can actually highlight it, select it and it will either remove duds (incorrect words from the puzzle) or reset your tries. It does not count as a try by selecting them either, so if you are ever on ur second or third guess and still not sure the answer, go through the junk and select the closed brackets. The game will highlight it for you so just scroll through the junk until it highlights. Sometimes they can be long too, so it might look like }>>>[^\>[¢>>}>))))((((] (you see the bolded closed brackets in there [ ] ).
Ooooooooook. This breaks it down and explains it and makes it waaay easier. Appreciate it Sixx, once again coming through in the clutch

Fasho.

When I first started playing New Vegas I didn't know either, so I would just randomly guess at first. And then back out after three attempts then try again. Eventually I figured it out, but in the beginning I didn't realize the correct number it gives you also means those letters are in the EXACT same spot. Once I figured that out it's easy. In the older games it was fucked up because if you guessed four times and failed, that terminal would forever be locked and you could never unlock it. That meant we all had one less attempt because we would have to exit the terminal after three attempts. Now they just made it so it stays locked for 10 seconds. Sure it might be easier just for the sake of making it easier, but it was super annoying to get permanently locked out, which just meant everyone would reload their last saved game, essentially just wasting time so I'm glad they changed that.

Do only some spots say cleared played a little yesterday went to go help my settlement cleared out the gunners then my game glitched and couldn't do anything so I turned it off
Yeah. Some, if not most places for example are essentially Raider locations so you can clear it out but new Raiders will retake the location within 48-72 hours. Same goes for Gunners and Super Mutants.

@ so this is probably creeping into OCD territory but do you have any Legendary Merchants at your settlements? I'm currently trying to obtain them all, which surely is completely unnecessary but fuck it. I recruited the Vault Tec dude (the same guy that recruits you in the start of the game, pre-war), Ann Hargraves, and I just recruited Tina Deluca from Vault 81. These people can become the only level 4 merchants at ur settlements, so they have rare items to sell and generally more stuff and more caps.

Does this work with companions too? I didn't even know this was really a thing. I had heard having specific people man the trade stands unlocks unique items, but do they have to be selling those types of items? Like if I assigned Hancock to a weapons stand but he had unique armor would I still get to buy it?

I think they have to be assigned to the correct one but I'm not positive. Companions can't be merchants. They can be Provisioners though, at least some. I have Strong on a supply line which I'll follow him from time to time and watch him absolutely destroy everything in his path lol

Who is Bobbi? I did a quick Google and says she's at Goodneighbor. Where exactly? I've been there a million times, never ran into her.
when you fast travel into goodneighbor, go past kill or be killed/old state house like youre going to the other part of goodneighbor, but take your first right down an alleyway kinda behind kill or be killed. there'll be a warehouse on your right, right before the alleyway, then another one after. i think you just have to go to her door and maybe pass a speech check then u get the quest

I've decided to attempt to walk to Diamond City cuz that sounds like where all the action is. I accidentally sent my dog away and I'm level 6 so its been so so lol. Its so fucking easy to get side tracked in this shit
You can get ur dog back, in case you didn't already know. You can fast travel back to sanctuary hills, assuming that's where u sent him, then fast travel back to your last fast travel point, or whatever is closest to diamond city. If you traveled the main road out of sanctuary hills you should have came across a little diner. If you help them out you get some caps and the owner is a small merchant to buy and sell, which is a nice little spot early in the game. But yeah, Diamond City has much better merchants and quite a few of them. You probably can't afford too much stuff though right away, the prices will go down as you progress and get a couple perks that lowers merchant prices (can't remember the name). There are some cool people and storylines there, one of my favorite characters resides there.

I have that vault tech guy bht he was annoying and stupid looking so i banished him to the slog. Merchants are worthless anyway i have 8 shops with NPC's assigned at sanctuary for a whopping 50 caps every 2 days ooooooh that was totally worth wasting like fucking ten perks on. Stupid ass dumbass Bethesda and their shitty fucking unfinished game looking like a 2008 game fuck you Bethesda. Maybe ill worry about it when a different settlement mod gets made or a caravan mod or something
