Adam Schefter--Surprise, surprise: Raiders have not cut QB JaMarcus Russell and they plan to have him attend this weekend's minicamp to compete.

LOL!

this is all over the last 9 hours or so

JaMarcus Russell is currently believed to be in Oakland working out.
This indicates that Russell will be at the team's upcoming minicamp, as the team planned. The Raiders, for now, seem unconcerned that a Russell injury at team headquarters would put them on the hook for $9.45 million.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, JaMarcus Russell is expected to attend the Raiders' upcoming minicamp.
Part of the thinking behind Jason Campbell's acquisition is reportedly that he'd "mentor" Russell, who's exhibited awful decision making and work ethic throughout his three-year career. Campbell draws high marks in both areas. Schefter says the Raiders haven't ruled out trying to "salvage" the former No. 1 overall pick. It's unclear if Russell will participate in drills.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk.com that Jason Campbell will be the Raiders' Week 1 starting quarterback "absent a complete meltdown" in training camp.
This is more like it. Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski may split preseason reps, but Campbell blows Gradkowski out of the water in every area in terms of talent, save perhaps straight line speed (Gradkowski runs sub-4.5). The Raiders also run a hybrid West Coast/vertical offense. Campbell learned just about every system known to man during his five years in Washington.

Updating a previous item, the Raiders are reportedly "awaiting the final word" from owner Al Davis before releasing JaMarcus Russell.
ESPN's John Clayton suggests Russell may still attend minicamp this weekend, but the Raiders won't let him practice for fear of injury. Davis famously told former coach Lane Kiffin to "get over" his reluctance to play Russell because the former No. 1 overall pick was a "great player." Russell's impending release as possibly the biggest draft bust in NFL history is a tough pill for Davis to swallow.
