the only time I remember not tipping recently is when I went to chicken n waffles, but that's because they made us pay before we got our food (what kinda shit is that??) I decide what kind of tip I'm going to leave after the meal, based upon the food and service I receive. since we already paid we forgot about the tip. also, the waitress was a fucking rude ass bitch, so she didn't deserve a tip anyways

Servers don't even make minimum wage. Servers at your local Denny's, IHOP, Waffle House etc. only make around $2.50 an hour and servers at Applebees, Chilis, Olive Garden etc make around $3.50 an hour.
It makes me fucking nuts when people like Filthy Rich say shit like "waiters extort". Without tipping your server the restaurant industry fails. If you don't want to tip, don't go out to a restaurant, there's plenty of McDonald's around for you to cop a value meal.
It's funny too, when I worked as a server back in the day and my baby's mom works as one now at Olive Garden we always seem to notice that the cheap ass non tippers and low tippers are always the people that run their server around like crazy and always try and get as much out of shit as they can like all the extra bread they can get, chugging as much soda as possible and getting crazy non stop refills. cooks, bartenders, hostess' etc make an actual wage. Servers don't make money like that, my daughters mom does this shit, she works at Olive Garden here in Phoenix, AZ and makes $4.00 because of her experience.

I'm pretty sure this all goes by where you live. I know plenty of people that have worked at places like that and they all got minimum + tips.
Anyways, to stick with Cereal Box Head's thread I tip depending on service. There have been 3 times I can think of off the top of my head that I didn't tip at all because of shitty ass service. If I get average service, well then they will get an average tip (couple bucks) and if it's great service I've left as high as 50% before.

In california, im pretty sure it's illegal for ANY establishment to pay you less than the city's/county's minimum wage. The state is currently at a minimum of $8/hr and i think SF is around $10/hr. I know a lot of people that are waitresses and they get AT LEAST minimum wage.
I have definitely heard about bartenders and waitresses getting just a couple bucks an hour in other states though...that shit is shady hahha

I only tip if they deserve it ... if the waitress has a shitty attitude and lets me drink get low ,she doesn't get a dime .. and I'm not going back to that bullshit restaurant.
Although ... I have left big tips when I feel like they look at me like some kind of paisa. I recently moved out town for work to a predominantly white area .. I walk into a "sports clips" to get a hair cut and this lady that cuts my hair says not one word to me while she's fixing me up... all the other ladies are hella talkative making small talk with their clients but everybody is white there ... So when its done the hair cut came out to $17 ... i gave her a $50 and told her to keep the change , her attitude changed almost immediately .. she was all like thank you , you make sure to come back and see me again .. my name is blah blah .. you look great by the way , very handsome with the new cut.. I bet the girls fight over you all the time ... i didn't say a word i just nodded and walked off .. But now every time i walk in there they all know me by name ..

Reservoir Dogs was a different time. people cant just up and quit there shitty jobs to seek new ones anymore. Most servers get paid under minimum wage and even if they get paid minimum wage that still isn't shit. Most people in this world are assholes and these servers and waiters have to deal with that shit everyday with a smile. As long as my waiter isnt rude I tip since sometimes shit cant be controlled by them. If it's busy in there or she's running around cleaning and doesnt refill my drink I dont blamer her and put that on her, she's just doing her job and i bet if you asked for the drink to be refilled instead of playing stupid mind games to get out of tipping there wouldnt even be an issue.

Decent Service (you didn't want to walk out of restaurant but you know you've had better) -- 10%-15%
Great Service (Went well above and beyond to make sure you never had empty drink, or ask someone else for something) -- 16%-20%
Bad Service (Bare minimum. Took cigarette breaks, eating while helping you, needed to be reminded everything) -- 1%-9%
Horrible Service (Walking out type shit) -- Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero.
My inlaws are very fucking cheap and splitting a bill with them is embarrasing. I always tip something, or atleast try too. I am aware of the fact that servers don't make shit in for wage per hour and rely soley on tips. My inlaws always seem to think they should do better or that even they (my inlaws) themselves can do better. It's comedy, but sad.
Embarrassing if you are eating at a really good restaurant with them.
