Precious - this movie is about a fat, black, illiterate, teenage single mother living in Harlen in the 80's with an extremely fucked up life. Not going to say much but was a lot better than I expected, as depressing as it was at times. give it a B-. Mo'Nique surprisingly played the part of her disgusting mother very well.
This movie had potential of being an A if not for several factors - 1). they don't show/explain enough of WHY Harlem is fucked up in the first place (i.e social, economic factors that lead people to be poor, etc.) and 2). the movie demonizes people on welfare (the mother), which is common in hollywood (both republicans & democrats do this). Even Clint Eastwood did this in Million Dollar Baby (if you recall the main characters mother was a free loading welfare fat blob that wouldn't except gifts from her child in fear that she wouldn't be on welfare anymore). It kind of suggests that poor people are poor because they want to be or because they are bad people and unintelligent.
