unfortunately.

I been rapping before I even knew artist where making money so Im not doing it to make a quick buck. As an artist trying to do it myself I have no budget. I have to do all my promotion by hand with flyers knowing 90% of those flyers handed out will either go in the garbage or get thrown on the street. Getting radio play on a station like KMEL or Wild is a long shot without paying. I break it down like this,This is how I see it in my eyes. It cost money for street teams,It cost money to get your music played on the radio,It cost money for ads in magazines,It cost money for flyer/posters/promo disc,It cost money for features and production. So at the end of the day an independent artist is kinda fucked without a label backing them or a private invester.
the things you listed is what it takes to be SUCCESSFUL in the music BUSINESS. money makes the world go round and just like any business is the main ingredient.

The problem with the bay area rap scene is two-fold. We need to do address the two issues:

1) Make outstanding music
2) Get the correct people around you or handle your own business

If you want to focus on being an artist, get the right team of people around you. Accounting, legal, management, marketing, and internet and multimedia.

If you get a deal with a major, you would still need the accountant, manager, and lawyer anyway. You can do everything for yourself a major can with the correct team, but on a smaller scale.

Right On Homie. And when he say Management I am sure he means a professional Manager or Management Firm. Your homie from the block isn't a Manager.

Homie. You need to take your music to "COLLEGE" Radio. Get them to support you. Supply them with everything you can. Have a Rep from the "COLLEGE" Radio Station on each Campus going around Campus hanging up posters for you and handing out flyers. I promise you homie, it is the way you "WILL" win.
That's the next move Im going for after put out these two mixtapes

first off, no where in my post did i say an artist actually makes their money off signing that "major deal".........i've been fuckin wit music & enuff artists and ppl (who been in the industry longer than me) to know that. but wat we do ALL know is that signing that deal can provide a wider range of networkin possibilities (tours, features, endorsements, etc.), that u prolly wouldnt get plug on as easy wen indie......its all on ur hustle and how u play ur cards. and as u said most niggas do make most their chips off tours and features and all that (no dispute), so im just sayin that the "major" deal can definately open doors.
whut up blud i remember you from myspace and yahoo instant messeger we used to chop it up :siccness: my shit got deleted shit i remember yawll muzik slap

Even if i made $0 dollars off my album i would sign. Good money is made from touring, features, beats (i produce), endorsement deals, now you gotta name you can capitalize off that a name is worth $$$$$$

I mean I wouldnt be ready to just jump into some slave deal though or pull a FAB or a Clyde deal though where I sign and I just sit in the background the only way would be if they put me out they can have the money off the cd i dont give a fuck i can always make more music but now i got options. i mean if u sign just make sure the terms are right.

as an example you say nobody making money who get signed the boy Young L helped buy his momma a house off his deal though you can't hate on that brah

***Also i doubt college radio is REALLY fucking with hip hop - for example im in college and they do show a little love but its more geared towards BANDS because you know how them cats at college is they dont want people promoting violence and drugs which is what most rappers rap about anyway. if your a concious hip hop act though then you might get some colleges to fuck with it but if your spitting about mollywhopping suckas and getting flights to boston i doubt your going to get much play on college radio imo***

Thats good for Young L. I did the same for my mother off the Independent Game. I am sure that the money Young L earned was off of Production, Publishing and Touring and most definately not from the sales of actual cd units. Not many "ARTIST" deals have terms that are right and most Independent Labels from the Bay Area are not ready business wise to land Label Deals for their imprints. Young L has a Niche'. That Niche' is PRODUCTION.

I have a side company that shops independent BAY AREA artists to 60 College Radio Stations and I can get most artists onto about "30" of those Stations as regular rotation. There are artists right here on B.A.R.T that can confirm that they have used my services and I have gotten them results.

I know this might sound corny but put up a craigslist ad saying that you are looking for a Manager in the Los Angeles or New York sections.

well put it like this do you think he would have been able to do it as quickly without the deal? not unless he was a hustlin ass muh fucka, a straight go getter i mean the independent game is FLOODED the rap game in general is FLOODED so if a muh fucka wanna put you on the boat i suggest getting off the life raft.

and yeah they didnt sell well. last time i spoke to him he was very unhappy with how they sold but look at the bright side - show money and they gotta name. personally i think they should have done a whole lot more with their 15 minutes because you never know they might not ever get back in the limelight. Shit i would have been making pack shoes, pack clothes i mean they been making clothes but why they wasn't sellin them when they got on u sposed to capitalize on shit feel me. they got the whole younger generation dressing like them.

also its dumb ass hard to sell independent in the bay in 08. i mean look how keak did he flopped worse than they did and he had some buzz and shit i say just take the deal and hope for the best dont pass up opportunity when it comes knocking

I shop the single of their choice to 60 College Radio Stations. I also Handout their Cd Samplers, Sticker and Flyers from Ukiah to Santa Cruz. Finally I ship out their 1-Sheets to over 100 Record Store of which I have contacts with. When I get a conformation that they obtained radio spins via playlists I give them a list of the stations their single was played on.

Homie. Your post is exactly what I started this tread about. Lol. It ends up with "not" getting the money from cd sales, but getting if from Publishing, Touring and Production. I like your example. And if people can follow Young L's example to their dream of the promise land then by all means do so and be "BLESSED". I just want them to know they don't have to sign their souls away for 7-Years if they don't want to.

Using Keak Da Sneak is a bad example. Keak Da Sneak should of got on a Plane to Japan, Germany and England "HIMSELF" and sold some International Units and got some International Tour Money. That is 100% Keak as a man to take his record to the next level.

It is good to see young minds working and seeing positive thought coming out of this thread.

Oh yeah I had already said earlier that the last person from California to profit from a cd sale on a Major Label was most likely Ice Cube back in the day. Check out all my posts in this thread and not just the last ones on the last page.

Stay Up. Stay Thinking.
