Cotto, Margarito, Chavez All Wait on Mayweather's Decision
By Jhonny Gonzalez
The negotiations for Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have concluded between the promoters, Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions. The fight may take place on November 13 in Las Vegas. The agreement has been approved by Pacquiao. The documents were sent to Mayweather with a mid-July deadline to accept or reject the deal.
Pacquiao is not the only fighter waiting. Several other boxers are waiting for Mayweather to make his decision. According to recent reports in Mexico and Puerto Rico, the careers of Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are on hold while Mayweather reviews the terms for a Pacquiao fight.
Top Rank promote Margarito, Cotto, Chavez and Pacquiao. If Mayweather rejects the deal, Top Rank will try to place Pacquiao in a fight against Margarito or Cotto in November. Chavez says he is scheduled to return on September 25 with an opponent not yet set. If Margarito gets the fight with Pacquiao, then Top Rank may put Chavez in a fight with Cotto.
If Mayweather approves the deal, then Top Rank will look at making a rematch between Cotto and Margarito, or a possible fight between Cotto and Chavez.
These fighters are not alone. Boxers like Andre Berto, Sergio Martinez and others, are looking to fight Cotto, Chavez and Margarito. Nobody can move things forward because the previously mentioned boxers are waiting for the Pacquiao-Mayweather negotiations to reach a complete finish.
Never before have so many careers been affected because of the outcome of a single fight going forward, or not. The anticipation and continued hype is going to make Pacquiao vs. Mayweather one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport.
